Hey everyone,
For today's review I have listened to Zayn's newest single called 'What I Am' which will be on his 2024 album called 'Room Under the Stairs'. The song is an emotional song with a simple set of lyrics which explains him speaking about himself and being accepted for who he is. Some of the words in the song include the words 'running around this board game' which is probably his way of describing what life is like at the moment, not really knowing which way to turn. He says 'you can know your own name, I won't give it up' suggesting that there might have been some self doubt when it came to his solo music career, but in fact he is not going to give up on being himself and being accepted.
He sings to himself 'am I crazy, am I foolish, am I stupid for playing these games with you' almost hinting at the fact that there was somebody in his life who maybe messed around with him or his emotions and he's not sure if it was worth all of the trouble. He adds 'if I told you I loved you, would you say it was f*cked up' also hinting at the fact that maybe this particular relationship wouldn't have worked out, but he's up for giving it a second chance, or doubting his previous decision of moving on from this person. Zayn also explains that he has 'been reading old sh*t' suggesting he's gone back and read articles or stories from when he was younger and most famously in the public eye, having been part of one of the biggest UK boybands to date, asking himself how he could make sense of it, and saying that there were potential conspiracies that he was dealing with.
He also says the lyrics 'take me as I am, I'm tired of dancing around the point' which is maybe a final plea for people to just ignore his past version of himself and just to be accepted for the version of himself that he is today. He describes the feeling as 'sharp', 'like the shape of glass and it steals my voice' suggesting that the thought of all these old stories and gossip, takes away from the emotions and goodness in his singing voice, as the attention seems to be elsewhere. It's an amazing first listen and I am very excited for his new album to be released in the next few days!
Until the next blog post, thanks for reading! Goodbye!
