Squid Game, Series 2 (2024) - Series Review

Hey everyone,

In today's blog post I will writing a short review on the second series of Squid Game which was released at the end of 2024. After an amazing first series, I was excited to see what the second series was going to produce, and I must say that it does follow on in a very mysterious way, but it's a shame how they left the series on a cliffhanger (sorry for the spoiler...they didn't manage to finish the second batch of games).

We find out that at the beginning of the series, the main character who initially was about to get on a plane and head out of town, suddenly changes his mind and decides that he wants to try and play the game again, in order to find out the creator of the game. His aim is to get the games to stop and for innocent people to stop losing their lives. We saw the man in the black suit who lures people into the game, and he played a game with our main character '456', giving him a clue of where to find the leader. Throughout the series we meet a variety of key characters who are in the film for a short time or a long time, such as the gentlemen helping '456' to find the creator, along with his team of detectives, as well as some of the players we finally meet when we head into the area.

Player '456' recognised the venue, and also the first game 'Red Light Green Light' where he tried to explain to the other players that he knoews how to play this game and to not move when the doll says 'red light'. Some of the players didn't listen to him, others mocked him and there were some who followed his instructions. We were quickly introduced to players '196' and '230', a sassy flirty girl and a purple haired emo, and unfortunately player '196' moved after the doll had said red light, meaning she was the first player shot and killed from the game. We met other players along the way including '390' who was our main character's friend from outside the arena, player '333' who's negative sharing of the Bitcoin brought him some enemies, player '100' an older gentleman with an attitude and player '120' who was the only transgender player of the game, showing some representation for the community.

We were also introduced to a female character who was scouted to be one of the soldiers who ensure that the games are played properly and people are following rules, and she noticed that one of the 100 players in the game, number '248' was in fact the father of the sick son who she met earlier at the theme park after he brought her a drawing of him and the character. One of the interesting things of the series was that not all of the games were the same, in fact it was only the first game... and the rest of the games were different. There was a round where they had to get into teams of 5, with player '001' who is the creator of the game, secretely decided to blend in among the players and take part in the game. They had to play 5 Korean mini-games which included the red and blue beanbag game, spinning top and rock throw.

The other exciting game was called 'Mingle' where the players were spinning around a circiular moving stage, and they had to get into a room with the stated amount of people... if it said '4' they needed to find 3 other people and lock themselves into a room to secure their place into the next round. We did lost a few key characters, such as '120's' friend along with some other recognisable faces from previous episodes. We didn't manage to complete the entire game, but we found out when the tables turned and the players became the ones in charge, when players 456, 222, 120 among others, began turning against the soldiers and player 001, who revealed his true colours of who he really was.

Until the third series we don't know what is going to happen next, but I think the creator of the game (player 001) wanted our 456 main character to get to the end of the game, and knows that he is a strong player. It was a very good watch, although I did prefer the first series as were introduced to 456 unique individuals and we were able to build connections with them along the way, but I think the second series was more of a storytelling series, hinting at future series, where maybe some of the players will be able to eventually take over the game, and when they're ready to shut the arena down, they may be brave enough to do so.

I hope you enjoyed my review, and until next time...Goodbye!
