LOCKDOWN LISTENING - X Factor Sensation Ella Henderson, YouTube Star MattyBRaps and Rap Artist NoCap

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all,

Seeing as I LOVE listening to new music, I have decided to stop recording music video reactions and start writing about songs that I stumble across over the next coming days, weeks and months. This will include unknown singers and artists, international artists and bands from a variety of different countries, states and cities but also friends and mutuals who are creating original music, wanting to delve deeper into the music industry!

Here are some of the recent songs (with accompanying music videos), that I have discovered during the middle of June 2020. It includes a song from an X Factor sensation Ella Henderson, an unknown singer/songwriter Sophia Gripari, YouTube Star MattyBRaps and an upcoming rap artist NoCap. See below for my very brief thoughts about the chosen songs for this post, and let me know which ones are your favourites...or if any of them have been added to you listening list!

Ella Henderson - Take Care of You (12th June 2020)

Since discovering Ella back in 2012 when she was on The X Factor UK at 16 years old, she has gone on to release several albums and collaborate with a variety of mainstream artists such as Sigma, Jax Jones and Sigala. This new single ‘Take Care of You’ was shot during lockdown and released on 12th June 2020. 80% of the music video was shot on her bed with various pop ups that resembled what we see on our computer screens (such as error messages, options, video call visuals and even the showcasing of old pictures and videos). With the pink and white colour scheme and uplifting pop song to accompany the music video, she is definitely an artist who is not going anywhere after lockdown, and is definitely somebody to watch!

MattyBRaps - Closer (16th June 2020)

Let’s be honest for this next one...MattyB is one of those content creators who has been circling the YouTube scene for so many years now! Unfortunately, I don’t remember half of the creators I used to follow, but he is definitely somebody that I will never forget. In the middle of June he released his new music video for ‘Closer’ and I thought I would watch it! From watching the video, he plays the character of a delivery driver making people happier with each delivery, and one of the customers was 13 year old Lola who has unfortunately had her birthday plans cancelled...but not for that long as her mum and Nan had something up their sleeve! With his newly dyed silver hair, soothing singing voice and colourful visuals to make the video worth watching, it definitely brought the song to life - and one of the things I love to see from YouTubers/content creators is original content or work, rather than just following Internet trends!

Tory Lanez - Stupid Again (18th June 2020)

Tory is a leading artist in the rap industry and has most recently worked with the controversial ‘Cash Me Outside’ girl Danielle Bregoli a.k.a Bhad Bhabie on ‘Babyface Savage’ almost a year ago and has been releasing individual singles over the past few months, including ‘Temperature Rising’ and ‘Dope Boy’s Diary’ - upcoming singles from a new album I believe? I was definitely head bopping along to this particular song as the background music makes you want to dance. The video includes a trend where one person drives and the other dances alongside the car. For those who like rap music, it’s definitely a good tune, he’s a very attractive lad (and there’s also a lot of pretty women in the video!). To make the video a little more interesting there’s also a short animated scene where Tory compares his car with his friend...Anyways, the video is very interesting and there’s so many different parts that make it interesting! It was also directed by Christian Breslauer!

Black Eyed Peas & Maluma - Feel The Beat (18th June 2020)

I’ll be honest and say that I haven’t heard from the Black Eyed Peas in a while...but they have now collaborated with Maluma on this recent single and it definitely adds a spanish vibe to the song. With the colourful graphics and almost stop-motion shots, the music video has been edited really well! The video includes colourful lights as squares, circles and other shapes which make the video almost like a ‘fairground/nightclub’ vibe behind each of the singers; (I’m not sure if you can compare a fairground to a nightclub...but I just did?). The main question from watching this video is whether I can feel the beat...and I certainly can. Alright, next song!

NoCap - Suge Night (18th June 2020)

Another rap song on the list of songs that have come out recently. In this video, NoCap is surrounded by a group of his friends and the majority of the video is all of them hanging out with each other. There are some clips where he has individual scenes, surrounded by forest trees/nature (and outside a brown building). He’s wearing a light pink jumper, and again the beat of the song is really cool! He says he only loves two things in life; money and diamonds…(shame I don’t have either, but I guess it’s a good plan to aim for what you want). I don’t think I’ve heard music from this artist before, but again he’s a rapper and I really enjoyed this track! I like to listen to a variety of tracks, so that’s why I’ve got more variety on my list this week!

Sophia Gripari - Lie to Me (22nd June 2020)

Sophia is an unknown singer/songwriter but her most recent single popped up in my ‘recommended videos’ on YouTube, so I decided to listen to it! The music video has a vintage style with lots of vibrant alternatives of colour, such as using light purples and pinks, rather than bold colours. I believe this song is all about love and finding the ‘right one’. She admits that she’s not ready for love, and that if the person who she is singing about does love her, he should lie otherwise she’ll have to turn him away. It’s a very simple pop song and the music video was shot and edited very well! (That’s my media side analysing the music video).
