Here's a collection of 8 singles that I decided to shed light on between 11th and 25th June (excluding the first song 'Crawl' by Blakey which was towards the end of May...but I wanted to include it in this list as it's from an unknown singer/songwriter with a lot of potential talent!)
Blakey - Crawl (22nd May 2020)
The overall vibe to this video is quite casual, with very fast transitions and short segments in each scene. The song is really well written with a mix of fast and slow paced lyrics. I think this is another song about love where he admits to wanting to crawl back to somebody who he is fascinated by. The background of each of shots is really cool - and the fact that the whole video was filmed and edited from his phone shows that anybody can make a home made music! You just need lyrics, background music and a nice friend to just hold the camera and film you from a variety of different angles. Wearing a silver hoodie with an orange a black jacket is the outfit chosen for the music video, and the orange actually blends in with the beautiful sunset captured on the camera multiple times throughout the music video! I loved the song, the music video was simple and it was definitely easy to follow.
MIYA MIYA - Hometown (11th June 2020)
Before I even watched this music video, I thought the singer was female so it was a shock when I started hearing a guy singing! Either way he has a really lovely voice and the song is really well written. The name of the song is called ‘hometown’ and through the music video MORE VOICES BEGIN APPEARING!! MIYA MIYA is a band of 4 (including one female). During the video one of the lyrics talks about thinking of your self worth, love and glory instead of feeling like you’re worthless! During the end of the video, I think that the guy in the music video wants to be remembered for doing something extreme and ends up putting on a suit and diving underwater...he ends up on a beach probably thinking ‘Erm how did I get here’, but at least he stayed alive!
ELIZZA - Habit (19th June 2020)
I had the screenshot of ELIZZA’s sponsored post on my phone for at least a week before I decided to write about the song. I am trying to juggle 101 things at the same time! Anyways, the introduction to her new music video shows her in a variety of scenes, with interesting transitions between the shots, including blurry shots (something I have a secret love for). I love the mix of shots both inside and outside, and the fact that most of the shots are moving whilst also recording ELIZZA! My favourite shot in the video is when you see her sitting in the kitchen among the red and white colour scheme of household items. Her style gives me Alice in Wonderland vibes, and she’s constantly referring to something being good, and whether it was a habit...I’m guessing she’s talking about previous relationship she had with someone. Either way the music video was really cool and it seems like a very simple concept which she was able to piece together, rather than trying anything too ambitious that may not have worked!
Ramz - Underneath (19th June 2020)
Once I realised that Ramz had released a new song, I thought I would watch the music video and write a quick review about it! He is most well known for his song ‘Barking’ which was released a long time ago. In this song, the main message is that girls should be embracing their natural beauty and he is surrounded by three gorgeous black ladies! One of the interesting aspects of this music video is the show at the beginning of the video where Ramz is surrounded by 5 microphones...almost signifying that he is going to speak even louder to make sure people understand his opinion. At the end of the video, you can see the face of one of the girls without makeup and fake eyelashes on, embracing her natural beauty! During the middle of his music video, he explains that all his life he has loved black girls, and no one can say he hasn’t - and if people start laughing, he’s being honest! I think this is definitely a sign that Ramz is a nice guy as he is showing that he is respectful of all women, no matter how they look - but embracing BAME/black girls saying that they don’t get enough attention and that dark skinned girls look fabulous! This song is definitely an empowering song for people to not only be able to relate to, but to also dance to!
Doja Cat - Like That (25th June 2020) ft Gucci Mane
After all the viral TikTok videos to some of Doja Cat’s previous songs, I thought I would check out the new video to her song ‘Like That’ which came out towards the end of June! The music video is a mix of animated visuals and real life video footage. The video is filled with colour and galaxy themed content! It feels like I’m in an online game and I’ve unlocked the best playable character! I discovered Gucci Mane after he became a feature on a Fifth Harmong song...and then he went quiet! (Or I just didn’t see any of his future music on my trending page!). Either way, from viral sensation to a singer/songwriter with over 3 million followers, I think Doja Cat has been pretty successful - and she even included some of the viral dances into her ‘Savage’ music video after the colossal appreciation of her song on social media and around the world!
Miraa May - Baby (25th June 2020)
As soon as I saw the title of the song was ‘Baby’ I knew either a pregnant lady or a baby would be included in the video. I believe the music video was sort of a throwback to old footage that she had filmed for previous singles or at earlier points in her life...as during lockdown it has been difficult for people to meet up with eachother! The lyrics in the chorus are along the lines of ‘You don’t know how much I adore you’ - which I believe she is singing about her unborn child, which is cute! She’s only got 34k subscribers on her YouTube channel but it seems like she has a really good audience of fans! I think the music video gives a small insight to her music career so far, showing several performances she was a part of and also showing the journey of her life as a ‘soon to be’ mother of one (or maybe more...who knows?). I believe that bringing a new child into the world is definitely something that should be cherished, especially as it was something that happened during the 2020 lockdown! At the end of the music video she shares links to the blacklivesmatter website and a link to show justice and support for Shukri Abdi - one of many who unfortunately has lost their lives due to this horrific situation of racism...
B Young - Catch Me Outside (25th June 2020)
I was instantly drawn to this song as the singer who goes by the name of ‘B Young’ is a male singer with long hair (something I am currently on the journey of experiencing...and I wanted to see what the music video was all about!). I believe this song is also a love song where he is singing to a girl that he likes. His style is quite simple and I love his singing voice and it’s a really soothing voice - and he also includes parts of other songs into his lyrics including ‘banging butt naked on the bathroom floor’ which is from another R&B song called ‘It Wasn’t Me’ by Shaggy! During this music video there are quite cool shots, such as those that are in the car park or on the beach with the orange sunset in the background, and the transitions between each of the shots are very clean and slow, rather than quick
G-Eazy - Had Enough (25th June 2020)
In this music video I love the various shots that are featured, such as the different backgrounds, up close shots of different people’s facial features and speed of the transitions. I didn’t even realise that G-Eazy was a rapper, but in the video he makes it very clear that he’s had enough with his ex-girlfriend and has decided to move on...The shots with the smoke in the background look like the sort of extras I would include in a photoshoot (and could almost be used as images for the album cover). He goes on to explain that his ex-girlfriend wondered how he managed to live without her to which he replies to saying that she’s vain, and thinking that this song was in fact about her...Right at the end of the video, he also steps outside of his car to see a deer standing infront of his car, but I’m unsure what the meaning was behind that? Maybe he decided not to kill the deer...and that it reminded him of his ex girlfriend? Who knows??
