Let's make the most of 2020's Christmas period!

Updated: Apr 9, 2023

Hey everyone!

I thought I would make a blog post about the year of 2020, including the high's, low's, social media 'internet stars' but also giving some tips, tricks and hacks from myself and those in the media, on how you can enjoy this festive period like any other...although this year we are all being asked to stay at home!

On 7th February of this year, Philip Schofield had his first live interview since realising that he was gay, and decided to come out on National television! It must have been an incredibly difficult moment for him as it was something he was getting used to for so long, and felt that it was the right time to be open with his sexuality! In addition to the television interviews, he released a book called 'Life's What You Make It', where he reveals all of the highs and lows in his life and how he has got to where he is today!

On 15th February we sadly lost Caroline Flack, a television presenter most commonly known for hosting ITV's dating show Love Island as she was discovered in her apartment and celebrities, influencers and members of the public came together to give her the sending off that she deserved! It's such a shame when people die so young, and I think her death was a speaking point for those with mental health issues and difficult situations to speak up about their problems rather than keeping everything to themselves and suffering in pain.

Another unsung hero of 2020 has to be Joe Wicks, the nations favourite P.E teacher! On 23rd March as the world began it's first lockdown, fitness trainer Joe, known online as the 'Body Coach' hosted livestreams on his YouTube channel every single day, with tips and tricks for staying fit and healthy, and getting the nation moving whilst stuck at home! He also did a 24-hour P.E challenge for Children in Need, and that alone raised over £1.5 million! Most recently, he has also created an app, where you can get tips and tricks of how to stay fit and active whilst at home, and released two new cooking guides called 'Wean in 15: Up-to-date Advice and 100 Quick Recipes' and '30 Day Kick Start Plan'!

Marcus Rashford, a 21 year old footballer has also become a national treasure this year as he was campaigning for more free food and school meals for young children from October 2020, as no young children should have to be hungry at all, let alone at Christmas time! After having his campaign rejected the first time by the government, a fow of support on social media made it impossible for the government to ignore what the public were voting for! Here's an article and a video with more information on the causes Marcus was trying to raise awareness and money for!

The world discovered a new star on 27th April in the form of a parrot called Chanel, after her owner Sandra posted a video on social media stating that her parrot had run out of the house and she didn't know where the parrot was! The video had since been turned into a social media meme and there was also a remix of the song which went viral...which made Chanel and Sandra eligible for an interview on This Morning with Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby!

On 17th July, it was announced that Captain Tom Moore would be knighted by the Queen because of his dedication to raise money throughout the COVID-19 pandemic! After serving in the army between 1939 and 1946, he managed to raise more than £32 million for NHS charities after walking over 100 laps of his garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire! Since his success went viral, Captain Sir Tom Moore has also published THREE books titled 'One Hundred Steps: The Story of Captain Sir Tom Moore', 'Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day: My Autobiography' and 'Picture Book: Captain Tom Moore'!

2020 was also the year that Donald Trump went head to head with Joe Biden to see who would come out top as the next President of the United States...and Joe Biden won, by a landslide! After many allegations from the Trump family and representatives of a 'rigged election' and that 'mail ballots are making the system unfair', Joe Biden was declared the new leader of the country! It was on November 3rd that I posted my first post on my videography website, stating that 'this is the night of the election' - and although the majority of people got what they wanted, we just have to think about the other half that voted for Donald Trump to remain the president...American politics is confusing, but I think it'll be a better run country with a new leader, especially after the history of Donald Trump's leadership!

On the 10th December, we lost the nations favourite pub landlady Peggy Mitchell a.k.a Dame Barbara Windsor due to her Alzheimers condition! She was known for playing characters in the 'Carry On' films and soap opera 'Eastenders'.

A shocking and saddening news story that I felt on a more personal level, was that Jesy Nelson, member of Little Mix, the only group to won The X Factor, and the only girl group to have made it past week 2, decided that she was quitting the band on 14th December due to personal circumstances and the constant battle of being in the spotlight. I understand how difficult it is being in the limelight with everything in your personal life, becoming public...and not been able to stay off social media, as that's part of your job! The girls have been going strong for just under 10 years, but Jade Thirlwall one of the final three members stated that they weren't planning on going anywhere, anytime soon! Jesy Nelson also created a documentary about her life called 'Odd One Out' which won an NTA award!

On 16th December we found out that it was Andrea McLean's final day as a Loose Women, after spending 13 years on the panel, and over 20 years presenting with ITV! Below is a link to the 13 years of memories to say 'Thank you' for all of her hard work, and the memories that she was able to create with the other loose ladies, including Brenda Edwards, Stacey Solomon, Janet Street Porter, Kelle Bryan and the rest of the cast!

Andrea's last show and emotional goodbye:

Ok, that's a lot of gossip, drama and heroes of the year! I'm going to quickly summarise some of the best shows, music and why the rise of podcasts has got a variety of people starting their own podcasts this year!

The best music collaboration of the year has to be either Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes or Dua Lipa and Miley Cyrus!

Queen of showbiz Alison Hammond has also started a podcast where she delves into the 'behind the scenes' with celebrities including Emily Atack, Joel Dommett and Olivia Atwood who are all featured in the first series! But Alison's got competition, as Prince Harry and Megan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex have not only got a Netflix deal, but they're also teaming up with Spotify to start their new royal podcast which is going to be called 'Archwell Audio'

Wow, 2020 has been an absolute rollercoaster of a year, but I thought I'd do a little summary just to keep people updated on what's been happening this year! And also, let's hope we have some more stars of 2021, but also, that this COVID-19 virus goes away!

Goodbye, farewell! Merry Christmas and eat loads of food...you deserve it!
