Jesy Nelson (ft Nicki Minaj) 'Boyz' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

In today's music video review I am watching Jesy Nelson's debut single as a solo artist, alongside rapper Nicki Minaj. Jesy left the band towards the end of 2020 to focus on herself, realising that there was too much pressure being in a girl group and that after 10 years she wanted to go on her own journey. There has been a lot of positive and negative coverage about the reason why she decided to leave the group along with people thinking that her mental health problems were not real, and were an excuse to venture onto a solo career. Personally, I love and will always love Little Mix (which includes Jesy) and I wish nothing but the best for all of them. 10 years in the spotlight is a long time, but whether they continue singing forever or pursue solo carers, I will always support them in what they do!

In the beginning of the music video, the first title that popped up onto the screen was called 'Perfectville' which is probably the area which brings all of Jesy's favourite things together, allowing her to do what she wants and have this solo career as a fresh start for herself. There is an old man outside his house trying to sort out his water hose, followed by a coach driving past with a security car in front. The sky is clowdy and could almost be a signal that something dangerous is about to happen, making perfectville not so perfect. There are multiple security guards waiting outside the coach with sunglasses on, with lots of female dancers in fancy and colourful outfits walking onto this new house which has just been sold. Jesy Nelson comes out of the coach and can be seen to throw the 'for sale' sign on the floor, as she could be the new owner of the property.

She begins singing whilst sitting on the top of a roof, singing the words 'you know I know how to please ya', and adding that she loves tattoos and gold teeth. She continues to sing that 'I don't want it if it ain't bad enough', which explains that she doesn't want to be with a good boy, but in fact somebody who could be a little bit dangerous. The next scene shows her with a female friend, wearing a short square set of dungarees, showcasing long red hair and wearing white heels. You can see her preparing for a golf shot and accidentally hitting the Boyz branded golf ball into the apartment window next door, which shows her comedic personality still being seen by the viewers.

There is a short dialogue between Diddy and Jesy who happens to be the owner of the property next door, explaining that she can't be constantly hitting golf balls into his property, and whether she describes herself as 'Jesy' or 'Little Mix', she needs to tone her behaviour down. Jesy is just standing there sucking a lollipop and not taking the situation seriously. Jesy is then seen in a black car with several guys, singing the words 'you get me weak in the knees', wearing a mis of a grey dungarees set and a UK branded matching bra and underwear set whilst her male dancers are working out. The backing dancers and Jesy are then involved in a dance routine where they are wearing white tops, black dunagrees, builder boots and black caps, almost creating a circle around Jesy.

The final part of the music video sees rapper Nicki Minaj appear in a white room wearing black sunglasses and accompanies with a band behind her, including women on the keyboard, drums and guitar. Nicki sings about 'raspberries, cherries and berries' adding that she's edible, and explaining that she can 'do these b*tches like a library' as the types of guys they are singing about could be moving from one woman to the next in quick succession. Nicki also goes on to sing the lyrics 'we got all the jelly b*tches actin' real messy' which could also signify that any jealous females who are looking in on their close bond, are jealous of the success that they will now have from this newest collaboration, to help Jesy's career progress quickly, but also for Nicki's huge audience of fans and followers to jump on the hype around Jesy Nelson. It's definitely a great debut track for somebody who didn't start as a solo artist, and I am excited to see what happens next!
