Daya 'Montana' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

For today's music video review, I am watching the visuals for Daya's new single called 'Montana'! As of 2021, Daya is worth almost $5m which is incredibly motivating and she's only 22 years of age! She is predominately known for releasing her first album with the hit single Sit Still Look Pretty' and has since gone on to release other great tunes including 'New', 'I Wanna Know' (as a featured artist alongside RL Grime), 'Safe' and 'First Time' among others!

In this video, there are a lot of shots of trees, bushes and what looks like a countryside environment where she is seen to be dancing and performing. The beginning of the song starts with some soft guitar sounds, before Daya sings some of the opening lyrics including 'do you ever think about leaving, do you ever think about me and you', suggesting that she's fallen for somebody romantically or is at least thinking about moving to a new area to focus on this new romance. The fact that she asks this question, hints at the fact that she has plans of her own to move to somewhere new. She explains that she's 'tired of the busy nights, fed up with the city lights...don't want to spend my life in this place' which allows the viewers to realise that she might want a bit more of a secluded and quiet life, than being where all the parties and nightlife takes place.

Later on in the video, she can be seen sitting on a wooden ledge of a red cottage that seems to have an entire radius of land. She explains that 'there's nothing else I would need if I had you in Montana', giving confirmation to her new lover that she would not regret her decision, and although it's something that they might have only planned on short notice, she's confident that this is what she wants for the long term. 22 year old Daya can also be seen walking through a field, with a massive smile on her face, and is wearing a white cropped shirt, brown top, blue jeans and black shoes with her hair tied up. Her look reminds me of a cowgirl kind of vibe, and she adds a touch of emotion to the next set of lyrics, stating 'I can wipe away your tears if you're crying' suggesting that she's the fierce female in this relationship, able to help out her lover when they need. Daya is see stroking a horse and walking down an empty highway, and the final shots show her laughing once again on an empty road, and the weather conditions seem to have changed to snow and hail, which is an interesting and creative way to end the music video!
