Britain's Best Parent - Episode 1 (Overview)

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all!

I thought I would make a few blog posts about the new series' I have been watching on Channel 4 called 'Britain's Best Parent' which has brought together 9 different parenting styles (3 per episode) and seeing which one is best way to bring up children the most effectively. The show is hosted by Anita Rani, and according to the description of the show they answer one of life's 'most hotly-debated questions' as to which parenting style is best!

Episode 1 saw single mum Joana bringing up her son with a 'gender-fluid' approach, not identifying them as male or female, an obvious mistake for other children and adults to make, including the other parents that were featured on the show, not knowing how to address her child. I think over the last few years, gender fludity and identifying as non binary is something that will spark a lot of controversy and disagreement, especially with those in the media, but for the people experiencing it themselves, it's their life and it's not something that should be made fun of.

I think one of the concerns is that a lot of people are confused with what it means to be gender fluid, and there are a lot of celebrities and famous people who are oinly starting to reveal their identities and true selves, including Nikkie Tutorials, Munroe Bergdorf, Caitlyn Jenner and Lauren Harries among many others. It was an interesting parent approach to see, but some of the other parents weren't so sure if it was the best way to bring up a child.

Kevin and Kerry's approach was a 'hands off' method which meant that they would be parents, but let the children take control of their own needs and wants - which is a sensible method, as you don't want to be telling children what to do in every aspect of their life, but also want to ensure that there is at least SOME understanding on what they should and shouldn't be doing!

Thirdly and finally, inspired by their Asian philosophy, Rin and Robin's approach towards parenting was to make their children into 'school warriors', having routines which enabled the children to still be able to have fun, but ensure that there were time limits on using electronic devices/watching TV. During the episode, you saw that Willow (Joana's child) wasn't wanting to take part in these 'soldier like' events, but in the end decided to join in with the game and seemed to enjoy it!

It was Rin and Robin's parenting approach that won over the audience members, and they were the first set of parents heading through to the final of Britain's Best Parents!
