Birdy 'Surrender' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all,

For today's review, I am going to be discussing Birdy's new music video for 'Surrender' a song which will be released on her newest album in 2021, 'Young Heart' (which is available now for pre order). I think she is most well known for her song 'Skinny Love' which has been covered numerous time, and at the age of 12 years old, she won the Open Mic UK competition!

This video was really well put together, and full credit to Sophie Muller who directed the shots! I like the variety of shots throughout the whole music video, with several throwbacks to old memories but also some nice current shots. Birdy is seen at the beginning of the video, sitting on a train, with double exposure shots being transitioned in and out of, which is a skill I learnt back at secondary school with photographs, but it has been done incredibly well with video overlays!

One of the scenes shows Birdy in a white singlet top looking directly into the camera which helps the audience get that little bit closer, through the vocals and also the visuals. I instantly noticed how soft and relaxing her singing voice was, singing lyrics including 'Sometimes I try so hard to fight, when all I want to do is fall' and I think that's the perfect way to describe the current situation that everybody is continiously living...that motivate to fight, but also that fear of constantly failing...She goes on to sing 'fall into the night...into your arms, surrener' which could almost be a way to explain that she would rather be with somebody, than by herself.

Throughout the music video there are quite a lot of dark shots with some of the scenes featuring a bright sunset/sunrise or just brightness in the background, which helps change the mood of the video over simple changes. Other lyrics that Birdy sings at this point include 'delays on the district line' which identifies that she's either London based, or she's a regular user of this particular train line, and continues to sing 'looking at pictures on my phone' - as when you're underground, or in an area without good mobile data/service, the only things you can do is scroll, listen to music, sleep or listen to other people's conversations! (Or that might just be me???).

Towards the end of the video, there were nice shots of Birdy walking along the beach in a white Victorian-styled dress, followed by some shots of her sitting on a white sofa, which is quite a personal touch to add to the music video, as it almost seems like she's allowing her fans and the listeners into her personal space, in order to explain her situation or how she's feeling at the moment. I liked some of the shots where her hair was naturally flowing in the wind, with a mix of the dark sky, and her final walks across the beach with clouds hovering above her head! It was a very creative concept for a music video, and the lack of dancers, backing singers and 'dance track' vibes, made it more relatable for the current situation that a lot of people are in at the moment! At age 24, Birdy has had some amazing points in her career, and I think that releasing another album, will most certainly help her skyrocket her platform, and you never know...there could be some amazing collaborations in the future!
