Zoe Wees 'Girls Like Us' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all,

It's been almost a year since I last watched and reviewed one of Zoe's music videos, and she's back with a new track called 'Girls Like Us' which sounds like quite a reflective type of song. I was quite excited to listen to this one, and my review will be down below!

At the start of the music video, you can see Zoe in a square with her long green braided her, with a quick transition into a video shot of her standing in the rain with a black jacket and completely different look from her previous music video 'Control'. The opening lyrics include the words 'red lights in the dark, feel so heartless' which could explain that sometimes she feels that she is in a dark room, but the only help is negative, as the colour red usually has connotations with anger, fear or hurt, rather than actual advice or help that would be able to positively enhance somebody's life! She goes on to sing the lyrics 'it's so hard to explain with your heart in a cage' which could also explain that she wants to speak about her emotions, but either she's too scared to be too open, or she feels that she won't be listened to anyways, so the best thing to do is lock up her emotions until she is ready for somebody to listen.

The chorus of the song has lyrics which include 'girls like us' which could instantly be a link to her race, as she's a dark skinned girl, and there could be negative implications of that in her life, or potentially the types of girls that are being spoken about or highlighted in this video might come from under represented walks of life that are often stereotyped badly within the media. She goes on to say 'we don't know who we trust, not even the ones we love' which might explain that no matter what positive role models or family members are out there, it's difficult to know who to trust for a variety of reasons that aren't openly explained within the music video. Some of the following lyrics include Zoe speaking about looking into a mirror, and not 'seeing beautiful looking back at me' which could also identify that some of these girls might have self confidence issues or are unable to express themselves. The variety of shots in this music video are really interesting but they also work really well together; including various shots of Zoe with pink braids in a living room that seems to have flashing lights in the background (almost like lightning and thunder), scenes in the rain, a close up shot of her having tears/makeup being rubbed off of her face, and then towards the end of the music video there are some quite emotional and serious looking scenes with some of the girls looking directly into the camera.

Overall, the song has such powerful singing vocals from the only just turned 18 year old German singer/songwriter (who will be 19 in May 2021!) and the dark silhouette shot that has been included at the end of the music video, with a hint of light blue seen in the curtains are great touches to bring the video to a close! The topic of the music video is quite a deep topic, whether it's about race, self confidence or having issues that need to be overcome, but it's also great to hear those being spoken about so openly by somebody in a younger generation, as negative experiences from a young age usually end up either having positive outcomes in the future, or the bad situations get worse and worse, so either way, it's great that Zoe has decided to address these now in her latest music video!
