In today's blog post I will be reviewing Years & Years' new track called 'Starstruck' featuring Olly Alexander, the main man himself! One of my favourite songs so far by this artist is 'King' which I have sung on repeat for the last few years, so it's great that there is some new music being released!
In the music video, the opening lyrics included the words 'I feel like all these people in this room don't shine like you' which is either a hint that he sometimes gets nervous when around a particular person, or he is a very self confident individual who knows that he is well known, well liked and that he has a unique vibe compared to anybody else he might be in a room with. He is seen wearing a blue shirt with a spotted suit jacket, which kind of looks like pyjamas, but also kind of stylish at the same time. Olly can also be seen dancing with a copy of himself, and it looks like he is chasing him through various rooms in the venue that the music video has been filmed. This could hint at the fact that Olly is playing the role of himself and also somebody who is popular, and thinking that potentially, this is how they would react if he was to 'fanboy' over them.
Olly goes on to sing the lyrics 'I can't help it' which shows signs of emotional attachment, followed by 'I get starstruck around you...what can I do' which suggests that he might be a little awkward around this individual that he is singing about, or he could be talking about multiple people. The overall music video comes across as quite comedic. He goes on to sing 'I wanna tell you everything that's on my mind even if I choke' which hints at the fact that he could get nervous while he is explaining some of those things.
The final part of the music video sees a nice corridor splitting into multiple sections, with Olly's twin chasing him down the hallway, and his copy is seen holding roses, with the other Olly running far away - as sometimes being too nice to people or getting too excited about something can scare somebody away, especially if they don't feel the same way towards you. The video then shows a really nice shot of a palace inspired staircase, with palm trees and yellow wallpaper seen in the background. The video finishes with lots of unique robotic dancing from Olly in a very spacious room which he has to himself, and it's definitely got some great visuals which keep you enticed from the beginning all the way to the end.
