In today's music video, I will be watching Willow Smith's new music video for a song called 'transparent soul'. A lot of artists write either their stage names or song titles in lower cases and it definitely helps their brand stay remembered. Willow Smith's stage name is 'WILLOW' and this song features Travis Barker!
For the opening scene, there is a shot of WILLOW walking through a corridor, guiding people out of her way so that she can make her way into a busy nightclub with loud music and other party animals. Some of the opening lyrics include 'all your fake friends will sell your secrets for cash' which is a sign that not all your 'friends' are in fact your friends, but sometimes they just want to get information out of you in order to make money, or they'll only want to hang around with you because of your social presence, platform or wealthy lifestyle (if you're lucky enough to be able to live a life like that!).
WILLOW can be seen in a busy nightclub having an argument with a guy she may have had a drunk encounter with, and there are lots of bright colours and lights to make the scene more dramatic. The video shots of this music video are also quite unique and there are some great shots of the topless drummer playing a variety of the drums, with his varied facial expressions showing the concentration that he has in order to play the right tune. WILLOW goes on to sing other lyrics including 'treating me like royalty, but are they kissing as*' which hints at the fact that sometimes she is treated very well, but unsure if they are genuine or if they just want to get on her good side. I think it's interesting how she's only 20 years old and is already having these thoughts and feeling about relationships, but then she might have a bit more experience and understanding for these topics as her family are already in the public eye, and she may have already witnessed things that she is now going through herself. There are lots of shots of a person in a silver disguise who seems to be following WILLOW throughout the video, and towards the end of the music video, there is a shot of a bright light in a circular shape, and WILLOW is seen reaching out to the silver figure, almost the sign that help is there when you least expect it.
