Hey all!
This is my FIRST post of 2021, and I must say it's a pleasure to be here, but let's hope in about 360 days from now, we're all in a better place, virus free and allowed to go outside and see people! I thought I would write a quick blog post about a new gameshow that began on 1st January 2021. It has recently been reinvented since it's release back in the 1980's! Adil Ray OBE is a British actor, comedian, radio and television presenter and is now hosting the new show all about words and letters, called 'Lingo'. What is the show all about? Read below, and I'll summarise the first episode that I saw so you can see if it's something for you!
We were introduced to three teams of two players which for the first episode were father and son, Simon & Will, mother and daughter Dawn & Regan, and husband and wife Sue & Paul, and the aim of the game was simply to guess the valid word chosen at random in a total of three games per round.
In the first round it was all about answering 3 lingos that were 4 letters long, with each lingo worth £200 if guessed correctly. For example if the word was 'FISH' and the contestants guessed 'FAST', the F & S would flash green, and the A & T would flash red as they are not in the puzzle. Any correct letters in the wrong place would flash orange! After three rounds to guess different 4 letter words, there was a 8 letter word which would earn them upto £300, the quicker they guessed the answer! Here were the results after the first round:
Round 1:
bonus 10 word lingo for upto £300 extra money - Simon & Will £400
(£200 for 2 correct lingos & bonus £0)
bonus 10 word lingo for upto £300 extra money - Dawn & Regan £300
(£200 for 1 correct lingo & bonus £100)
bonus 10 word lingo for upto £300 extra money - Sue & Paul £700
£400 for 2 correct lingo & bonus £300)
In round 2, Adil's little catchphrase was 'If you put in a good word, you could go home with thousands of pounds'. The game was exactly the same, but there were 5 letter lingos instead of 4, and the other teams would be able to steal the lingo if the players ran out of time. The bonus word in this round was 10 letters and worth upto £500 extra money. Here were the final results after the second round!
Round 2:
each team answer 3 lingos of varying letters (5 letters) & ability to steal money. lowest pair at the end of round are eliminated - worth £300, and opponents can buzz in and steal
bonus 10 word lingo for upto £400 extra money
begin with losing pair
Dawn & Regan total: £900 (Will & Simon stole the third lingo - £700)
bonus: £160 = £1,060
Simon & Will total: £1,300 (Dawn & Regan stole the first lingo - £1,360)
bonus: £100 = £1,400
Sue & Paul total: £1,300 (Will & Simon stole the third lingo £1,700)
bonus: £400 = £1,700
Unfortunately that meant Dawn & Regan would be the first pairing to be eliminated from the competition, and it was Simon & Will vs Sue & Paul in the battle to win the prize money!
In the third and final round, one teammate from each pairing would play two 4 letter lingos, and the other would play two 5 letter lingos. If they guessed the word on first guess, they would earn £500, after 2 guesses £450, 3 guesses £400, 4 guesses £350 and if they got it right after 5 guesses; £300 was added to the prize pot! Here were the results from the final round!
Round 3:
Simon's first 4 word lingo: +£400 = £2,100
Paul's first 4 word lingo: +450 = £2,150
Simon's second 4 word lingo: +£350 = £2,450
Paul:'s second 4 word lingo: +£300 = £2,450
12 letter word worth upto £750
Will's first 5 word lingo: +£450 = £2,900
Sue's first 5 word lingo: +400 = £2,850
Will's second 5 word lingo: +£300 = £3,200
Sue's second 5 word lingo: +350 = £3,200
12 letter word worth upto £750
Simon & Will total: +£750 = £3,950
Sue & Paul total: £3,200
Unfortunately that meant Sue & Paul would be the second pairing to be eliminated from the competition, and it was Simon & Will who made it to the final round, to try win the prize money!
In the final round Simon & Will had 90 seconds on the clock to solve a 4, 5 and 6 word lingo in order to win varying amounts of money. If they solved a 4 letter lingo, they would lose half of their money and only walk away with £1,975, if they solved a 4 and 5 letter lingo, they would win all the money they banked, which was £3,950...but if they were able to solve a 4, 5 and 6 letter lingo, their money would be doubled to £7,900!
They were able to solve a 4 and 5 letter lingo, and went home with all the money in their prize pot!
I think the concept of the gameshow is very simple, but for people who enjoy word games like wordsearches or crosswords, it's definitely a game which helps you think and tests whether you are able to stay calm under pressure!
