Hey all!
For today's music video review I thought I would write about a new Troye Collaboration! Troye is such a talented singer/songwriter, and has worked with some incredible artists including Queen of pop herself, Ariana Grande! This song had a video released back in July 2020, but he's since teamed up with Kacey Musgraves and Mark Ronson to create an alternative version of the song, released at the beginning of December 2020! Without anymore delay, here's my review!
At the beginning of the music video, it stated that this was 'Part II' and I've not seen the first video, so not too sure if they link together or not...but here's my review of part 2! I must say that it's incredible how much was able to be pieced together into a 4 minute video, but I think it worked really well, even if I don't understand the storyline! There was a nice introduction shot of Troye to begin the music video, with him looking into a mirror which had a variety of coloured filters including green and blue. He was wearing a white shirt and looked as if he was thinking about something, maybe reminiscing over something from the past that had already happened. Some of his opening lyrics included 'I know how it seems between you and me, it hasn't been easy darling' which could explain that it's maybe a song he is singing to somebody that he's had a bit of a rollercoaster relationship with, and although they might be alright now, they have had to overcome some difficult situations.
One of the following scenes see Troye sitting at the back of what looks like a dance class, but ends up being a drag show performance, with flashing lights and a full stage production which has all been set out really well, although Troye seems to look a bit lost. The next scene shows an introduction shot of Kacey, and after reviewing the entire video, it shows each of their journeys of getting ready, before they met up with eachother and ended up in the car together. There are shots of her dying her hair, almost trying to disguise herself...was Kacey secretely the drag queen? Some of the lyrics that she sings include 'I know I'm not easy darling', almost trying to explain that this is something she has experienced before and will not put herself through again. Both Troye and Kacey end up travelling in a car to a venue where they seem to be the centre of attention, with the flashing lights of colour and changing backgrounds, being the focus on the shots.
It cuts to a scene for a brief time where both Troye and Kacey are sitting outside of Jenna's toy shop, smoking a cigarette and heading back into an apartment block or building to have some time to themselves. The shots of them sitting next to eachother in bed are really well filmed, and it's almost like a timelapse, cutting from clip to clip to show the time that they are sitting there for. Troye goes on to sing the lyrics 'what did we do, tell me we'll make it through' which might explain that both of them had a bit of a messy night, and that the music video was told in a non-chronological order. Although we see the drag night happening first, it's almost like they were in the apartment, went to the drag show and then ended up driving somewhere afterwards, but everyone will have their own interpretation of the story!
Towards the end of the music video you can see Troye driving them both away from the venues, almost driving as far away from the current city as possible, and this particular scene is shot in the dark. The camera cuts back to Kacey driving, and Troye as a passenger...so maybe all of the previous clips was just Troye dreaming, or he could have been thinking back to a real life experience that happened with a previous partner or friend (not Kacey obviously), but she was the character to fill in the story.
