Hey everyone,
The Weeknd is back with a new single and a new music video to accompany so I thought I would write a short review for it!
At the beginning of the video it was quite obvious that the content had been short vertically which is quite an interesting style to structure a music video, and there is a mixture of blue and black lighting, whilst The Weeknd can be seen wearing a black cap. Some of the opening lyrics include 'are you alone baby' and '...pick up your phone baby' which identifies that he has strong feelings towards the female he is singing about. He adds that he wants her to 'put your pride aside, you're the best I ever had' which could also explain that she might not be single. The further lyrics provide evidence of this with The Weeknd singing 'I didn't know you were down for a finding out' and 'I thought you had some kind of love for your man' which hint at the fact that she's in a relationship but open to making love with another man. The overall look of the shot is quite dark and gloomy, with flickering lights and what looks to be people kissing in the back of the car throughout the video.
In the next part, there is a blurry transition which then pans from left to right showing different close up shots of The Weeknd, with more flashing lights to add effect. We can then see 2 people who seem to be crying in eachother's arms, and a car full of females with zombie eyes and flashing lights appearing behind them, with what seems to be a 'nightclub effect' with the lighting fading from black to visible. At the end of the song, The Weeknd sings the lyrics 'don't you miss me babe' almost inviting the female he has feelings for, to try what she wanted in the first place, but it's almost like he is double checking that this is what she truly wants and doesn't want to negatively affect whatever she currently has with her man. The final shot shows The Weeknd sitting down, and it doesn't seem like he is in a car anymore, but in fact a nightclub/bar, so maybe the entire music video was all his thoughts put together into a hypothetical situation.
