Hey everyone,
From 18th to 22nd May 2021, The Eurovision Song Contest was back on our screens, and after all of the qualifying rounds took place, a total of 26/39 countries made it to the Grand Finale to see which performance was going to win the 65th edition of the show! The most recent winner was Duncan Lawrence who represented The Netherlands with his single 'Arcade', which meant that the contest was going to be held in Rotterdam as their prize for winning! I rated each of the 2021 performances out of 10 for Looks, Dancing, Song and overall Performance (so a maximum of 40 points available per performance!)...
The first performance of the night was from Cyprus' representative Elena Tsagrinou with a song called 'El Diablo'. I loved the red staging and it was a very good song. I also thought that the backing dancers were good and the song had quite catchy lyrics, as well as the overall performance having an amazing style, the singer being beautiful and also reminding me of Zara Larsson.
(L:8, D:7, S:6, P:6 = 27/40)
Albania's Anxhela Peristeri performed a song called 'Karma' whose performance also involved a lot of colour; such as the red and blue fire, and she was also wearing a lovely dress! I didn't understand the lyrics but the vocals seemed to be very powerful, and there was no dancing which could have made the song more memorable.
(L:9, D:1, S:4, P:4 = 18/40)
The next performance of the night was from Israel's Eden Alene, with a song called 'Set Me Free'. I must admit that this was one of the poorer performances of the night, and I explained that it was quite a good track and very pop, and the artist was wearing a lovely silver outfit. She also had really attractive backing dancers, the song had a catchy chorus and it was interesting to hear the story of Eden transitioning from being a ballet dancer to a singer at only 20 years old!
(L:6, D:4, S:6, P:6 = 22/40)
A group called Hooverphonic represented Belgium with a song called 'The Wrong Place' and I explained that it was quite a simplistic performance without much dancing or moving around. All of the singers were dressed in black which was part of the overall look for the performance, but it made the song quite creepy and cool at the same time!
(L:4, D:0, S:2, P:5 = 11/40)
The next performance was from Russia's Manizha who performed a song called 'Russian Woman'. At the beginning of the performance, the artist was seen in a doll and then jumped out to reveal a very bright red outfit. The words 'be creative' were one of the many lyrics written on the board in the background which is definitely what this performance was, and the song was also fast paced which is the type of song that usually does well in Eurovision!
(L:6, D:1, S:6, P:5 = 18/40)
I think Malta's representative Destiny was one of my favourite performers of the night with her song 'Je Me Casse' which was a song about a female being approached by a man at a bar, and refusing the offer. At only 18 years old, the performance was great, she's a great dancer and the overall performance featured a lot of bright colours. She also has a very powerful voice for such a young age.
(L:9, D:7, S:9, P:8 = 33/40)
Up next was Portugal's performance which was a band called The Black Mamba, performing a song called 'Love Is On My Side'. This was a really nice slow song with great lyrics and vocals along with simplistic staging. I also liked the blue background with matching lights, and the main singer also had great hair. All of the artists had a great dress sense and the singer was able to also reach a lot of great notes!
(L:8, D:0, S:9, P:8 = 25/40)
Representing Serbia was a trio girl group called Hurricane with their song 'Loco Loco'. All of the girls were very pretty and they looked amazing in their outfits! Their dancing was in sync with one another and I liked the black and white colours as well as the constant backdrop of lyrics that appeared behind them!
(L:9, D:9, S:8, P:9 = 39/40)
The United Kingdom was up next, with James Newman representing us with a song called 'Embers' which was an original single. I explained that the UK always have a unique performer, and James' song was really good. It reminded me of something you might hear at a nightclub, and I really loved the red and blue lighting throughout the performance, as well as the trumps. I added that 'We should at least make the Top 10' but we all know now, that we didn't even make the Top 25...
(L:7, D:1, S:7, P:6 = 21/40)
The 10th performer of the show was from Greece, and Stefania was the youngest performer of the 2021 Eurovision competition at only 18 years old! This was a very interesting performance but also very impressive. I loved the sparkly purple outfit and the invinsible backing dancers made the performance a little more exciting to watch!
(L:10, D:2, S:9, P:8 = 29/40)
Switzerland's artist Gjob's Tears performed a song called 'Tout l'Univers' and I loved the black and white themed performance, which looked like he had blocks as his stage. I also loved the black sparkly outfit and the facial expressions that he had throughout his performance. He also had great vocals and powerful notes throughout!
(L:10, D:2, S:8, P:9 = 29/40)
The only country unable to perform in person were Iceland, and their representatives Daði og Gagnamagnið sang a song called '10 Years'. It was an interesting song with nice blended harmonies and I also loved the backing colours, fast vocals and dancing. It was a song that sent me to a different dimension and was most certainly 'fascinating'.
(L:7, D:3, S:7, P:7 = 24/40)
Spain was the next country to perform with Blas Canto representing them with a song called 'Voy A Querdarme'. The overall performance seemed very still but the singer had great facial expressions throughout as well as having amazing vocals. He is a very good looking man and I loved the open buttoned shirt. It was a great addition to have the big moon above his head as well.
(L:10, D:1, S:8, P:9 = 28/40)
Another weak performance of the night was from Moldova's Natalia Gordienko with a song called 'SUGAR'. The song seemed very energentic and smiley, but the only sweetness was from the backing dancers who were super sexy. I loved the background graphics with the squares and lines and it sounded like a club anthem!
(L:6, D:2, S:3, P:4 = 15/40)
Up next was Jendrik who sang 'I Don't Feel Hate' which was his entry for Germany. It was the most energetic performance of the show so far, and I loved the bright pink shirt and the dancing fingers! The song was very catchy and I love the topic of the song especially with the lyrics of the song including the title, explaining that he doesn't feel hate!
(L:10, D:7, S:9, P:9 = 35/40)
Finland's song 'Dark Side' was the first rock song of the night, performed by the band Blind Channel. It was definitely a memorable performance and I loved the long hair of each of the group as well as the emotion that could be felt throughout the song. One of the lyrics 'Put your middle fingers up' is almost hinting at being able to stand up for yourself and not letting the world control you which was a great message!
(L:7, D:7, S:8, P:8 = 30/40)
The next performer was called Victoria, and she represented Bulgaria with a song called 'Growing Up Is Getting Old'. I really liked the softly sung lyrics, and the artist looked really gorgeous with her red hair and simple outfit. The overall performance which showed a photo frame helped add emotion to the performance, as it was an image of a family member who had been recently diagnosed with ALS, but the song was a little bit slow to be memorable!
(L:9, D:1, S:9, P:7 = 26/40)
Lithuania's performance was from The Roop with a song called 'Discoteque'. It was a very slow paced song with very fast dance steps, and bright yellow outfits to compliment the performance. I liked the background colours and visuals and it made the song become more of a stage performance!
(L:6, D:9, S:8, P:8 = 31/40)
Up next was a song called 'Shum' from Ukraine's representative Go_A. The song had incredibly unique singing and I loved the fast paced instruments and the backing music. It sounded like the type of song you would hear in a church, and the artist looked great in bright green. It was great to see the contrast of colour with the performers around her wearing white, and I loved how the song began to speed up towards the end of the performance.
(L:9, D:3, S:8, P:8 = 28/40)
France's Barbara Pravi was next to perform with her performance of 'Voila'. She was a very pretty singer and it was good to see that she didn't need an entire stage of backing dancers or dramatic choreography. I loved the simplicity of the performance and the vocals were also really lovely!
(L:10, D:0, S:9, P:7 = 26/40)
The next country to perform was Azerbaijan's Efendi with a song called 'Mata Hari'. I explained that this song was a great performance by a Goddess! The overall performance and vocals were very powerful and she reminded me of a mini Ariana Grande...or Cleopatra in this case!
(L:10, D:9, S:9, P:10 = 38/40)
The 22nd performance of the night was from Norway's TIX with a song called 'Fallen Angel'. Again, this was another great performance from a living and breathing angel. It was also quite interesting to find out that 'TIX' actually has ticks, but the overall song was very soothing to listen to. I also loved the background dancing of the demons in their contrasting coloured outfits.
(L:10, D:1, S:9, P:9 = 29/40)
The hosting country The Netherlands were up next to perform to see if they could keep their title and win the show twice in a row. The artist Jeangy Macrooy performed a song called 'Birth of a New Age' and it was a great performance, especially with the blend of English and Dutch! The singer seemed super chilled, cool and stylish, and I loved the blue suit. The overall performance seemed to have a lot of emotion throughout, and he was able to reach a lot of the high notes!
(L:10, D:10, S:9, P:10 = 39/40)
Up next was Italy's Maneskin with a song called 'Zitti E Buoni' and I'll admit that I'm not usually a fan of rock, but I loved this performance. The main singer was super attractive and he was able to sing both slowly and quickly, in tune, and with confidnece. The band all looked great and I also loved the emotion in the song. I also loved the black boots that the main singer was wearing!
(L:10, D:3, S:10, P:10 = 33/40)
The penultimate song was from Sweden's Tusse with a song called 'Voices' and I said that I *think* Sweden's performance was my favourite performance of the entire night. I loved the singing voice and lyrics included the words 'forget the haters' which is something that a lot of people need to remember. The red outfit was great, and it was such a simple but effective performance. The song was all about voices calling out, and I said '...this is my winner!'
(L:10, D:9, S:9, P:10 = 39/40)
The final performance of the night was from San Marino, with an artist called Senhit who was joined by rapper Flo Rida with a song called 'Adrenalina'. It was the only performance featuring a famous rapper, and the song was very fast and catchy. I loved the colourful backdrops and the spinning stage, and the collaboration was great! I thought that the song will eventually be heard in nightclubs, and it's a lot better than some of the stereotypical sounding songs that you would usually hear on the show!
(L:10, D:10, S:10, P:10 = 40/40)
From the ratings that I gave each of the performances, here were the top 10 songs:
