The Apprentice, Series 17 (2023) - Episode 6 Review

Updated: Apr 9, 2023

Hey everyone! Here is my review of Episode 6 of The Apprentice!

At the beginning of this episode we found out that the remaining 12 candidates were going to be heading to Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 for the next challenge. Victoria thought that they were going to the aiport, Joe asked the boys whether he should wear his speedos and flipflops, and Reece said it would be a hotter climate than in Glasgow. The challenge set by Lord Sugar was for both teams to create a corporate away day in Dubai with 2 clients who were looking for a day out with their colleagues. Team Apex (Mark, Sohail, Megan, Marnie and Reece) were led by PM Victoria, and Team Infinity (Dani, Joe, Bradley, Simba and Avi) were led by PM Rochelle. For Victoria's team, she said that she had lived in Dubai for 6 years and has travelled by yachts that have catering, jokingly saying that she could probably drive the boat herself. They decided to go for a DJ masterclass which was 1,200 dirhams per person, with Marnie and Sohail saying that the price was a bit much, but if Victoria knows the market then they will trust her decision.

For Rochelle's team, she said that she's not experienced in the corporate world, but she was voted in as PM instead of Avi who also put himself forward. She decided that they should go for a desert themed trip with a camel ride. Joe said that the drum dancing was a bit of a big expense, with Avi adding that there was more risk. Both Bradley and Simba said that they would have said yes to the drums idea, but instead they went with coffee making which was cheaper. Rochelle's ideal price was 600 dirhams per person, with the budget for food no more than 50 dirhams otherwise it will become expensive. Marnie and Sohail were on the corporate team for Team Apex, and along with Victoria they tried to push for high prices. Megan said that the initial price was very expensive, with Victoria adding that people have money in Dubai and they would be happy to spend it. Megan and Mark were on food duty and they agreed they should go foor high end food for a high class event. On Team Infinity, Rochelle, Avi and Simba pitched their idea to the client, saying that they wanted to make sure the trip was memorable and luxurious, offering the coffee and dine experience along with the camel ride. The price was 2,500 dirham, and Simba managed to bring them back upto 2,100 from a lower offer from the client (around £480 per person).

Team Apex had Marnie, Victoria and Sohail for their pitch to Huda beauty, asking for 3,500 dirhams for 10 people, with the client saying they were looking to spend 10,000 dirhams in total. Victoria managed to get the price back up to 1,600 per person, with Baroness Brady noting that they still had all of the costs to think about. Victoria said that she felt like she got a good price, although the ticket price went down by almost half. Megan and Mark went for the classy option of food which cost 340 dirhams in total. For Team Infinity, Joe, Bradley and Dani went off to do food tasting, and they were told that they were not able to find this lamb meal anywhere else, which is why it was the highest price. Bradley said that they were happy that they didn't go for the lamb, with Dani saying that each customer will get two glasses of water and an orange juice. Victoria told her team that although they got a lower price for the tickets, they went for high end food. Joe asked Rochelle if they spoke about the dietary requirements needed and they realised that they missed out this information. Marnie, Victoria and Sohail tested out the water jets for one of their activities and Simba, Rochelle and Avi had a fact finding mission whilst riding the camels in the desert, with Rochelle saying that she felt like she was in the Prince of Arabia.

Bradley was negotiating a deal on the coffee making experience with Dani and Joe, and they were offered a bread making session for a different price. In total Bradley agreed to 4,000 dirhams for both coffee and bread making (which was the same price if they would have gone for the drumming). Megan and Mark said that they had a budget of 4,000 for the DJ, and he said to Mark that exposure doesn't pay the bills, and they ended up paying 8,000 dirhams. Baroness Brady also noted that they paid the DJ for an entire day when he was only going to be there for an hour, or less. Marnie told her team that she wanted to do a quiz with their customers, rather than making it feel like a speech, and Victoria also questioned Mark on why they spent nearly £1,300 on the DJ. Rochelle said that Bradley took a risk with the coffee and bread making, and could have just gone with the original drumming option. In the kitchen, Megan and Mark were working out how to organise cutlery and plates, with Megan saying that once you've got a system, you can smash stuff out, and she reminded Mark to ensure the serated edge of the knife was facing outwards. For the start of Rochelle's trip, she said to her group 'Can I get a DE-SERT' to get them into a positive mood. In the kitchen, Dani reminded Joe that they only had a limited amount of ingredients and to try not to add too much salad, and after Marnie's quiz with their client, one of them shouted 'I'm tired, can we go back' so that activity was cut short.

Avi started his team's dinner time with some jokes, and explained that there would be three courses. Marnie asked Mark and Megan whether the food was ready to go as the customers were hungry. Mark and Megan were being thrown around the boat and had to use one microwave to try and cook all of the food. For Rochelle's team, it was Joe who suggested to Simba that they should tell the client how many drinks they were allowed each, and it was Simba who told them about the limited availability, with one of the customers asking if they were being limited on water...in the desert. After serving the meal, Rochelle said 'I don't want you to get too full' which one of the clients said she had never heard before. In the kitchen with Team Apex, Mark said to the girls that they were ruining the vibe as he had both Marnie and Victoria stressing him out, and Baroness Brady said that the clients were starving. Dani reminded Simba that they shouldn't have told the clients what drinks were available, but ordered more if it was needed, with Joe saying that it would have been a good opportunity to say that they had listened to the client. Rochelle was told that the vegetable skewers were undercooked, and Avi asked if they could get more water for the clients. At the end of the evening, Dani managed to lighten the mood by telling the guests facts about Arabian coffee, with a small cup to enter, and a big cup to let someone know that they need to leave.

In the boardroom we found out that Reece had left the process, which is why he was not on the task. For Team Infinity, Rochelle said that she wanted 2,500 dirhams for the price and Simba's counter offer was accepted, with Avi saying that he loved riding the camels with his legs up. Simba said that he was personally disappointed with the food and Dani said that she thought three drinks would be enough for each person, but didn't realise it was going to be announced. For Team Apex, Victoria said that Sohail initially offered the price of 3,500, Victoria was brought down to 1,800 and they managed to agree on 1,600. Mark and Megan were told that they spent £1,000 on food and overpaid on the DJ, and the clients were disappointed in the slow service, rather than no hot food. In the end, Team Apex spent 10,279 dirhams, made a profit of 5,721, but had 20% of the clients wanting a refund, giving them a total of 2,500 (£554 profit). For Team Infinity, they spent 6,370, but had 60% of the clients wanting a refund, giving them a profit of 2,030 (£436), meaning that Team Apex won this challenge. The winning team were off to climb the 02, and Lord Sugar said that he had never heard of a 60% refund in a challenge before. Victoria said that she was surprised her team won, with Mark saying that Megan was a great team leader until she become little Napolean in the kitchen.

Bradley said that the issue was that the trip was sold as luxury, and Rochelle felt like she didn't over promise on what they wanted to deliver. Dani said that the issue was telling about the limited drinks, with Joe saying it was his idea to be transparent. Simba said that the failure of the task was with Rochelle and Joe, as they underdelivered and didn't like the food. Rochelle said that she left the hospitality upto Joe with Dani saying that limited drinks would have been enough. Joe said that it was his idea, but it was Simba who ultimately told them. Rochelle said that she also drilled to make profit and wanted to go for the drums experience. She brought back Joe and Simba to the boardroom. Lord Sugar, Baroness Brady and Tim discussed that Rochelle offered high prices and therefore had high expectations, Joe was responsible for the food and the slow service, and Simba told the clients that the drinks were rationed. Joe said that he managed to negotiate on both terms and Simba asked Rochelle why she had brought him back into the boardroom. Rochelle said that there were a lot of issues throughout the task that she had to fix, but it was Joe who was fired from the process, saying that he had learnt so much, and hopefully he will make a success of his own business. Rochelle told the other candidates that Lord Sugar is watching, and Megan said that it was just the 10 of them now. The next task was revealed as making a children's lunchbox, so until then thank you for reading!
