The Apprentice, Series 17 (2023) - Episode 5 Review

Updated: Apr 9, 2023

Hey everyone! My Week 5 review of The Apprentice is below!

At the beginning of this episode, there were 13 candidates still in the process to become Lord Sugar's business partner. For this task they were sent to Imperial College London where some of the candidates had their own thoughts about the task, with Victoria thinking it was something to do with dancing, Simba thinking it was advertising related and Mark revealing that he didn't go to college, he got a real job straightaway. Lord Sugar spoke about important topics like climate change and new technology, so the task was for both teams to create a name, advert and digital billboard for a new motorcycle brand which they would sell to those who work in the industry.

Team Apex led by Marnie, had Megan, Mark, Reece, Victoria and Sohail.

Team Infinity led by Bradley, had Dani, Joe, Rochelle, Simba, Shazia and Avi.

Before being selected as project manager, Sohail explained that he had a bike, with Mark also explaining that for his company they have been converting their vehicles to electric, but in the end, because Marnie was very creative, she was chosen, adding that it was an honour for her to lead the next task. Bradley explained to his team that he knows electric bikes are called 'Caf E Racers' and suggested that as their brand name, with Joe, Shazia and some of the others explaining that they wouldn't understand the meaning behind the brand name. Marnie explained that she wanted the bikes to be sexy. Bradley chose himself, Simba and Dani to be on the billboard and branding team, with Joe to be sub team leader. Shazia jumped in and said that she had a degree in media and would better suited to creating logos, so she became the sub team leader along with Joe and Simba. Shazia and the boys were not sure of the bike name, with Avi suggesting that they needed something simple and something that you could relate to being electric, so he came up with Zip Zap, and the tag line 'zip along in a zap' which all of the others agreed with. Mark. Marnie and Sohail were coming up with their slogan, and they chose 'ride dirty drive clean' which was a bit of a red flag, and you don't associate 'driving' with the motorbike industry, with Sohail and Mark not happy with Marnie's suggestions, and Sohail adding that the end result won't be great.

Shazia explained to her sub team that she wanted to have a motorbike on their logo, with Avi telling her to think about logos that we see in real life. Simba added that he was confused by the design and it wasn't simple. After designing the logos, Shazia said that they included lots of elements and it doesn't look messy. Rochelle and Megan pitched an idea to Bradley about how they should have a woman on a motorbike to show equality in the motorbike industry, with Bradley agreeing with the idea. Victoria, Megan and Reece were tasked with making motorbikes 'sexy' with Reece asking how are they supposed to do that. Megan suggested a storyline where the guy meets the girl and they fall in love, with Victoria reminding them to both think about the message, so that it's not lost. Back with Team Infinity and their casting, Avi and Shazia were happy to choose actress Bronwyn who was an actress and not a motorbike rider, with Baroness Brady saying to camera '...but she can't ride'. Victoria and Reece both seemed to take it in turns with directing, with Victoria reminding him to focus on the motorbike, with Reece reminding her that they also needed to make sure the video made sense. Bradley, Rochelle and Megan revealed that they were very disappointed when they got an actress who could not ride, as that was the whole point of the task. Dani came up with a back up idea for Bradley to win a girl over after buying one of the bikes.

Joe, Simba and Shazia went to create their advert, with Shazia letting Joe take the lead in directing. During the filming process, she continued to speak over him, so that wasn't very good leadership there. Marnie along with Sohail and Mark were still deciding whether they should add or remove certain images or lines to the final logo, and Bradley was told to redo his lines multiple times as he didn't make the words seem fun during any of the takes. before the pitch, Shazia was told by the project manager that she was in charge of the logo and advertising team, and went against the project manager due to her defense of 'time restraints'. Marnie admitted that their advert was not great, but that they could work with it. Megan said it was boring, and Reece said that yellow is not a sexy colour. When editing their video, Dani suggested to Rochelle and Bradley that they should have less words of Bradley and maybe replace it with music or a voiceover. During public advertising, Marnie received a lot of feedback that their motorbike advert seemed to be an advert about how to clean a bike, and with Shazia's team, some people didn't even mention the bike and the words Zip Zap looked like 'Zif Zaf'.

Marnie, Reece and Sohail were first to do their pitch of their idea 'Soldier' with Marnie taking the lead of the pitch. One of the chief officers of a creative agency said that the sense appeal was 'cliche' - which I think meant referring to a man on a motorbike with a woman coming over to have a look, with another panellist saying that the transport was lost, and it looked like a video for a dating agency. The final panellist also said that the word 'drive' is not associated with the motorcycle industry. For team ZipZap, Bradley said he was going to take the lead, with Avi starting with the opening line of 'who knows what an onomatopoeia is?', and continued to explain that the title of the brand needed to represent speed and electricity. The panellists said that the main feature of motorbikes was missed out, as they didn't have anymore riding a bike, and the name of the brand wass 'dreadful'. This is where Bradley spoke up to reveal the initial idea he had for the brand, and that he wanted to call it 'Caf E', which was described as being better than the original name. They were also told that the title looked like Zi Za rather than Zip Zap. Shazia told Bradley that you still have to back a product, especially when dealing with a difficult audience, and Marnie said that if they were to lose the challenge, it would be due to the advertising team.

In the boardroom, Marnie said that she doesn't have a bike or a driving license, but she had a good idea for a sexy product for motorheads, with the name 'soldier' meaning bold or confident. Lord Sugar jokingly said that the aim of the story seems to be for the woman to fall in love and steal the bike, and that no product details were given, it looked like a dating site, and Marnie herself even revealed that the panel were not sold on the electric part of the brand. For Bradley's team, he said he aimed the motorbikes at Generation Z, with Shazia admitting the poor choice of actress as she presumed they could all ride a motorbike. Simba also spoke about another of Shazia's errors, where she took control of directing even though she had appointed Joe to take the lead. Baroness Brady also brought up the fact that Bradley threw his colleagues under the bus when he spoke about the original team name that they got rid of. In the end, Team Apex (Marnie, Megan, Mark, Reece, Victoria and Sohail) won the challenge, and were off to enjoy Go Karting in London. With Team infinity, Simba said that people were unable to put their ideas forward and said that the advert was cliche. Dani said that they couldn't do their initial idea due to the actress without a motorbike license, and Simba admitted there was a fault on both teams. Shazia said that the failure of the task was Bradley, for trying to disassociate himself from the product.

Lord Sugar said that he specialised in advertising and called the teams logos 'diabolical', which was the team lead by Shazia. Bradley was disappointed that nobody went with the name of Caf E as the team dismissed the idea. Shazia admitted that she was happy to work in the field, and added that the logo was the issue. Simba raised his point that it was difficult to put points across, and Bradley also said that he came up with an idea, for the sub team to go down a design route to completely change the brand. Shazia criticised Avi for how he performed in the speech, with Avi asking her why she didn't speak up if she thought she could do it herself. Bradley added that he nominated Avi to be in the pitch, not to lead the pitch. Bradley brought back Shazia and Avi into the boardroom, with Baroness Brady and Tim discussing their opinions on each of the three candidates. Bradley's ideas were dismissed from the others in his team, Shazia admits her mistakes...but there's too many mistakes, and Avi's pitching style was awkward, but he did come up with the name and the tag line of the product.

Bradley felt as if his initial idea was dismissed as soon as the other team left the building, and Shazia was angry with the branding, but also with Bradley's negative energy which passed through to the other team. Avi disagreed with everything relating to the branding, and Shazia said that she stood up for her mistakes, which is a good skil to have. Neither Shazia or Avi understand the initial branding or logo that Bradley had created, but in the end it was Shazia who was fired from the process, leaving 12 candidates in the running to become Lord Sugar's business partner.
