Hey everyone! Here's my review of Week 10 of The Apprentice!
At the beginning of this episode, the final six candidates were told that their next task would need them to meet Lord Sugar at the Battersea Dogs and Cats home, with Megan shouting 'dogs' and Marnia stating that she would not be happy if the task didn't involve cats or dogs. Simba jokingly asked the boys where they were going, with a camera pan of the empty room as he was the final boy in the competition, and Dani said that people spend more money on dogs than children. Lord Sugar explained that there are almost 3 million animals placed into homes every year, and for this challenge, they needed to create a new dog food, brand, packaging and signature dish. It was only Rochelle and Marnie left on Team Infinity because of a double dumping in the previous week, so Victoria moved over to their team, with Team Apex being Simba, Dani and Megan. Rochelle said to her team that they needed to make a big decision for who should be the project manager and Victoria explained that she has a dog as well as a food business, with Marnie saying that she already has the idea planned out with the dog being the lead for the product. Megan explained to her team that she has a husky at home and she's got experience of buying dog food and cooking. She naturally took the lead of Team Apex and said that she wanted to go down the healthy route by including insects into their product, but she said to Simba and Dani that they shouldn't get lost in the idea, but that insects are a healthy alternative to meat.
Victoria became the leader for Team Infinity and she said that she wanted to go down a healthy and exotic route, using insects in a meal as it's something that's not been seen before. Rochelle said that she wanted to create a gourmet based food and although she has no idea on insects, she would create something to the best of her ability. It was Rochelle in the kitchen with Victoria and Marnie on branding, with Megan in the kitchen for her team, and Dani and Simba on branding. Simba explained to Megan that he had a proper vision and Megan replied by saying 'no offense Simba, but Dani is the sub team leader', with Megan explaining that being the project manager on the final task was a ballsy move. Simba explained that he was a bit confused with Dani saying that they needed to make it health, but not too healthy, and include insects but don't people it's got insects in the product. In the kitchen for the other team, Rochelle decided to try some minted lamb, kidney, liver and steak to see what her main ingredient would be, adding food items such as cranberries and a savoury element for her tagin idea. She explained that she wanted to be careful with he fragrance and use onion free gravy, adding that any dog would be lucky to have this food. Tim said that with gourmet food, you need more than 20% of meat, and Rochelle only added the minimum amount of 20%.
Megan said that her idea was to create a dogs dinner of a Sunday roast, and that she didn't want too many ingredients. She decided to add gravy, brocolli, and only used about 5/6 components to make an easy recipe. Baroness Brady explained that Megan had used a lower amount of what was instructed during the training of the main item, insects. For Dani and Simba they had to create a brand name with imba suggesting things such as Cofe's Kitchen and Bayley's Bowl', with Dani asking whether dogs had their own kitchen. Dani explained that they should go with the tagline protein paw and naturally nutritious with Victoria suggesting to Marnie that her name idea would be something like Mr Woof's. Marnie said that the name sounded quite low end and something using the word chef would probably sound better, and it could show that the dog has designed the food. She suggested Cher Barking which Victoria wasn't happy with at first, and then they agreed to disagree and stuck with that name. After explaining her recipe to her team, Simba asked Megan why she had included double potatoes and Simba added that the gravy doesn't have any nutritional value. Dani said that she could have done something more creative. Simba and Dani continued to disagree over the logo with Dani wanting to add a white paw and Simba explaining that they could write the name 'paw' properly and focus on the little details later on. Marnie said to Victoria that the dog is the leader of the food and the colour purple usually represents premium, with Victoria saying that they could add a white bone across thebrand name, and the slogan of 'designed by dogs, approved by you'. Tim explained that Victoria and Marnie's design was quite child like, but Dani naturally took a lead with the other design, adding logos such as a globe, worms and a dog paw pattern on the packaging.
Megan was creating a 400g sample of her dog food so she would have just multipled the ingredients by four, but she got the calculations wrong, explaining that she didn't have enough meal worms. She added that it had gone horribly wrong and she doesn't know why, adding that she would do it again for the dogs. Simba asked Dani whether he could lead the advert and for her to support him, and Dani ended up putting her ideas out for how they should get photos of the dog, suggesting to zoom in more on the dog holding on the gym weights and using the orange wall as their backdrop. Baroness Brady said that it felt like both of them wanted to take control, when the actual focus should be on photographing the dog for their advert. Victoria and Marnie were discussing taglines with Victoria saying that they could have 'what's cooking' with a question mark, and Marnie saying that it wasn't playful enough with the brand name of chef., adding that they needed something eyecatching and playful. Victoria said that they could add other elements and come back to the tag line later, with Dani saying to Simba that she was glad they used the orange background for their image. Megan asked Simba and Dani to show her the packaging that they had created, and Dani said that they explained it was protein packed on the branding/ Megan said that it felt like they had over complicated it, the idea woukdn't stand out and it's not a protein item. Rochelle said to her team that she loved the branding, but the poster wasn't eye catching. Victoria said that the tagline was created by her and they lost a lot of time due to disagreements, with Rochelle saying that the product seems a bit unfinished.
Simba asked Megan whether the food was supposed to be wet, with Dani saying that they didn't expect the food to be majority potato, and that there is more gravy than mealworms. Rochelle told her team that they had to try the dog food that she created, and that 20% of a dog's diet should be meat, with Marnie saying that for a gourmet dish, you would expect more meat but if Rochelle had an explanation then they can explain it. Victoria said that she was going to pitch with Marnie and Rochelle wou;ld be on customer research, with Megan saying to her team that she wasn't sure how the packaging was going to go down, with Simba saying that he was also disappointed in the design. Victoria and Marnie did their pitch to Waitrose with Marnie explaining that the dog had created the recipe. One of the questions from the panel was whether they should believe that a dog had created the brand, and Marnie explained that it was just a fun play on words. They were also todl that 80g of meat in the product was not enough, and not gourmet. Victoria said that they needed a minimum of the 20% but they agreed that it needed more meat. After their pitch, Tim said that the girls were not agreeing with any of the feedback, and Victoria said that there was nothing to change going forward. For Dani and Simba, Dani explained that insects were high in protein and low in fat, and they were questioned why there was an image of a worm on the product, with Dani saying that the worm was there for protein. One of the panellists said that the food was not protein packed as it had half potato and gravy, which is like giving a dog chips and mash, adding that it was more like a puree and had no texture. Dani explained that they ended up focusing more on the insects when Megan had told them to focus less on the insects.
For the customer research, Megan asked one of the dogs if they wanted some pro-paw and one of the parents said that the food looked more like gravy, and it looked like a sweet potato dish based on the packing. With Rochelle, one of the dogs had their food which the dog's owner said was a good sign, but when asked if they thought the item was preium, nobody put their hands up. Some of the feedback included that puns are usually not gourmet, the tagline should be the other way round, and they also expected lamb to be the main ingredient. The final six then did a speech to Pets at Home to try and sell their product to them. Marnie said that they wanted to have a dog sensitibe approach with dogs being at the etnre of the product. One of the panel said that Chef Barking desn't say gourmet and the ingredients don't say premium. Marnie explained that they wanted to focus on the element of balance, and the food being a healthy option for dogs to have. Dani explained that they wanted to use insects as a main base and they wanted to sell something different. They said that the food was mushy and wet, with Megan explaining that they could later alter the recipe to help the consumer and the brand. Simba added that the item had mealworms, which was almost like the dogs were having a traditional family meal, but eating worms. Marnie said to her team that shes not sure what more their team could have done, and Rochelle said that Marnie was quite defense in her speech which could have been off putting, and Simba said that if they were to lose the task, Megan would be responsible as there was no clear vision with the recipe.
In the boardroom, Lord Sugar said that marketing is the art of getting people to buy things. For Team Infinity, Victoria said that Rochelle naturally stepped forward as the chef as she was cooking in the house for everyone, and Rochelle said that she wanted to make a gourmet dish, including 20% of meat which is what is needed for a dog's meal. Marnie explained that she had put the idea forward as having the dog being the chef, putting the name chef forward to show that the dog was at the centre of the brand. Lord Sugar said that the dog in the advert looked a bit confused, and Victori said that there were a lot of push backs on the slogan that she created, with Marnie saying that she equally had good ideas. Victoria went on to say that if it wasn't Marnie's idea, then she wouldn't go along with it/ Marnie also said that in the pitch they delivered, the comment about their tag line was quite nit picky as it was supposed to be humorous if the dog had created a product. For Megan's team, she said that she wanted to make something healthy, sustainable and use insects as a replacement for meat, with Dani saying that her and Simba were very confused. Megan said that she asked three times if everything was clear, adding that the task was a lot harder than she thought it would be. She also said that the dog food was a lot sloppier than she thought it would be. Dani said that she wasn't 100% on the packaging but she did try to come up with Logos. Lord Sugar said that Simba was allowed to lead with the poster, but then Dani jumped in. She explained that Simba isn't a wallflower and he could have had a voice, and he said he had a vision but there was nothing said. Simba replied by saying that they spent so much time trying to turn the paw into a O, that they ran out of time on the advert. Megan said that she now understand why the packaging wasn't completed.
It was time to announce the results. Tim announced that his team received 0 orders from the larhge pet order, and Baroness Brady revealed that for her team, they loved the concept and passion of the team but the idea wasn't executed well, so also 0 orders. Tim said that the larger retailer wanted to order a test unit of 1,000, with Baroness Brady's team not wanting any orders. Team Infinity won the challenge, so that meant Victoria, Marnie and Rochelle were in the final five, and they were able to go in a helicopter to take them to lunch at Windsor Park as their prize. Marnie joked by saying that this was her chance to get rid of her competition and Rochelle explained that she was so happy, with Victoria saying that she was excited to be in the final five. Victoria said that she was ready to become Lord Sugar's business partner. Simba explained to his team that the vision wasn't clear and Megan said that she only told them to not make the entire pitch based on the insects. She said she was devastated when she saw the packaging and Dani explained that there was too much to include on the packaging. Simba said that him and Dani were also not working well together, and Dani explained that she had carried their team. Lord Sugar explained that 50% of the problem was on the food and 50% of the problem was the bad presenting. Simba said that he tried to hide the insects within the product and Megan quickly jumped in to say that she didn't ask them to say that. She explained that she was happy to go with the insects idea but not as the priority. Baroness Brady said that from the feedback, the buyers would have wanted them to embrace the insect idea in their speech, wth Dani saying that the message was mixed. She said that the item had nothing to do with insects and that they were told to use the word protein.
Simba explained that they ran out of time with the branding and Dani said that the packing didn't work because of the arguments, with Simba saying that it was eating into their time to focus on other things. Dani also said that Simba didn't offer any solutions, and that he was trying to be a little bit tactical by putting the blame on her. When discussing with Lord Sugar, Baroness Brady and Tim agreed that Megan picked a bold ingredient but there was a confusing message that she gave to her team, Dani's branding and marketing were not good, and Simba complained that Dani never listtens to him, or is it a problem that he's just a man that nobody listens to. Megan said that there were not mixed messages and she didn't just want everything to be focused on insects, adding that she wanted the item to still be fashionable. Simba explained that people ignore him and what he was saying was valuable, and did add value in the task. He also said that he came up with other brand names. Lord Sugar said to Dani that she's supposed to be good at branding, and she explained that there was bag packaging, but she had proved in the process that she is the right person for investment. He asked her to tell him facts, and she said that Megan had her win as project manager for the bao buns task because she was selling until she was blue in the face, and she also contributed to Simb'a win as well. Dani went on to say that everyone had made mistakes, but in terms of effort and enery, Simba had not contributed. Megan explained that she had never been in the bottom three of a boardroom before as she always put in effort and suggestions to the tasks. Simba saif that the only time he had been in the boardroom was when there was blame for something he didn't do.
Lord Sugar summarised, and Said that with Simba, if there's nothing worse listening to, is that the problem. He explained that Megan's product was total garbage and the product was inedible, and that although Dani talks at 1,000 miles per hour and claims that she's great at marketing, he hasn't seen that from her yet. Lord Sugar said that every dog has it's day, adding that Simba, it was not your day, and it was SImba that was fired from the process. Dani whispered to Megan on the way out that she thought she was a gonner, and Simba explained that he enjoyed the process and that he wishes all five of the girls the best. Marnie said that either all the girls will come back or it will be four girls and Simba, and Megan said that she felt nailed after that task. Victoria did a cheers to the girls, and that was it for week 10! The final five girls were Rochelle, Marnie, Victoria, Megan and Dani!
