SZA 'Good Days' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

Last week, SZA released a new music video for one of her latest singles called 'Good Days' and I thought I would write a short review. Directed by Solana, here's my written review...and I must say, there wasn't much-room for me to write a review! Read below to find out what I 'green'!

At the beginning of the music video, the introduction shot was a really small screen which was showing a sample of what to expect in the music video and seemed like it was filmed at home. Shots of the first environment were introduced, with views of the sunset, shots of the river and some really well shot angles through a fence which looked out towards the sea. We were then shown SZA lying on the floor, almost dreaming about things that she had seen throughout her life, including the Earth, insects and other animals, before transitioning to a new scene. We saw that she was in a real life mushroom world with all of the colours of the mushrooms quite bright and vibrant, almost matching the bright red hair that SZA was showcasing. Once she woke up, she began dancing, singing and performing what seemed to like weird spirit dancing, which extra shots that seemed to be from an old family camera appearing throughout the video.

The next environment that was shown to us, was SZA dancing around a pole that seemed to be in a gallery or office with a lovely red background and wearing a golden bra, very different to the initial scene in the mushroom world. Some of the lyrics that she sang includes 'places I'll go if you let me', almost begging somebody to allow her to experience different parts of the world by herself and giving her that control. She goes on to sing the lyrics 'still worried I wasted the best of me on you' as she seems to be speaking about age throughout the video, and wanting to re live some of her younger days again. She also speaks about 'I don't miss no ex, I don't miss no text' which are quite motivational and self confident phrases, almost explaining that at the time it may have been sad that she didn't receive a reply from somebody, or somebody ignored her calls, but explained that 'our youth is in the present' so it's no good thinking about the 'past', as you can still feel young during the present, which is a really interesting way to look at life!

One of the funny parts of the video is where SZA seems to roll down the hill in the mushroom land, but continues to dance, sing, pray and jump around the environment, before falling onto the floor as if she's getting ready to go to sleep! The shot quickly transitions back to SZA lying on the floor with what seems to be a little book next to her on one side, and a little blue mushroom on the other (which she probably stole from mushroom world!). The final shot in the music video shows a shot of the word 'self', almost looking like a petrol station, and she's seen dancing around a pole again, wearing a white top, blue shorts and party heels. The variety of colours, vibrancy and unique lighting helps to make the scene look almost like she's dancing in a nightclub. Some of the lyrics that she sings include 'felt so lost without all of you around me' which might be her thinking about somebody who she was close with, and they either got further away from eachother, or due to the coronavirus they have just been unable to meet up and hang out. She also adds that there's always some 'new b*tch getting on my nerves' which is something I think everyone can deal with at some point in their life, but actually, being stuck indoors means that you don't have to see anybody you don't like, or accidentally think that you'll bump into them...because everyone's stuck at home anyways!
