Hey all,
Today's new music video review won't be a shock, as these two artists have worked together before! Sia & David Guetta hit the charts with a single called 'Titanium' many years ago, and that's when a lot of people wanted to know the true identity behind the voice! This is my review of their new single 'Floating Through Space' released on the 4th February 2021!
At the beginning of the video you can see three teenagers climbing a fence in order to get into a skate park which seems to be isolated. The one thing to notice about all of these characters, is that they all have the famous hairstyle that Sia hides behind whenever she's performing on stage...and although people now know what she looks like, I feel like it's just something she is going to continue including in her future videos as it's an interesting concept she started, and there's nothing else out there quite like it!
During the entire music video, there are a variety of shots in the skatepark, with some close up, some far away and different speeds of shots through different camera lenses, and it's interesting to see that the mix of characters are both male and female, which I don't think I have seen in a Sia music video before. Some of the opening lyrics include '24/7 and 365, you made another day...made it alive' which means that we've all survived another year, no matter how long or stressful it has been, and that's an achievement within itself. I feel like those lyrics definitely resonate to the current times we are in with the coronavirus pandemic, and for everyone who is struggling at the moment, just thinking that this time last year, the pandemic had only just started, and one year later...we've survived! Sadly there have been lots of preventable deaths and illnesses along the way, but those people are in a better place now and we will meet them again in the future!
One of the things I noticed about the shots was the natural sunlight that was kept in the videos, as there doesn't seem any need to play around too much with the lighting, it it's daytime and the scenes look nicely lit up, and some of the songs looked quite 'vintage like' as they weren't black and white or colour, but somewhere in the middle. Other lyrics that Sia sang were 'we are like grains of sand, better to be holding hands' which is a metaphor to describe sand always being together, and unable to fulfil its purpose if each little grain was on its own - it's the same with humans. Sometimes it's good to be alone, but also some times it's better to be holding hands (or at least virtually holding somebody's hand) to show that you care, that you're there for them...and that no matter what happens you've at least got that 1 strong connection. To bring this review to a close, I also like the amount of circling shorts around the skate park, showing the journeys from one side of the screen to the other, and the natural shadows and colours that could be seen as well. One of the hidden meanings behind the music video is that the skateboard tricks are those that can be associated with individual people, but sometimes they want to hide their identities to avoid rumours being spread, or hate being caused by their actions. I think the music video was really good, but it would have been nice if there was maybe a dance routine during the middle with the mini Sia's - but other than that, I loved it!
