Selena Gomez 'De Una Vez' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all!

In today's music video review, I will be watching Selena Gomez's new music video for 'De Una Vez' (but I will obviously have to enable to English translation so I can understand what she is singing about). Without further delay, here's my review!

This music video was less than 3 minutes, but was still able to include a lot of different shots, and tell a clear story behind the lyrics! To begin, there is a shot of pink and purple glittery rocks that take us on a trail from being inside, to outside. We see Selena lying down on her bed with a heart shaped necklace in the middle of her chest, shining in multiple different colours. It reminds me of the type of shots you see in Disney movies when they first introduce a Princess, and she is surrounded in the opening shots with flowers and trees.

The music video has multiple transitions from one room to the next, almost like one long continuous shot, but with clear cuts and blends from one atmosphere to the next. She appears in the living room next and seems to be able to control the lights with her heart necklace, a scene familiar to Matilda, where the main character has magical powers! Selena is able to turn all of the lights off, before being transported to a new room! She sings the song in Spanish, but after translating the lyrics, it turns out that she sings the words; 'I don't have you, I have myself' which could identify that she is happy being by herself in this magical land, and she's going to start putting herself before anyone else from this moment on!

The continious shots see Selena walking backwards in the corridor, dancing her way into a room which reminds me of a disco room with colourful shiny walls and a simple decorative feel. 'I no longer feel you, I don't feel you here anymore' are words that she sings before moving into the next room, and this could also explain that there is nothing but a distant memory of somebody here, and all the physical attraction and feeling has disappeared...maybe the location of the music video has been set up to remind herself of the place she once used to have a lover, but instead is trying to undo all those memories...room by room?

The final room that she enters sees her sitting down on the floor, which also has bits of grass. The items in the room begin flying around...including a guitar and varius other items, and these could be all the bad memories that she is trying to get out of her head. She sings the lyrics 'But now my chest is bullet proof' so this could symbolise that she's a lot stronger physically than she was before, and she's more capable than before to remove the memories; both mentally and physically, without feeling any form of regret. The ceiling opens up and all of the items begin swirling into the storm. The final shot of the music video sees a very close up shot of the heart shaped necklace that Selena has been wearing the entire time. it lights up and begins changing into gold...It's a very dramatic and interesting way to end the music video, but it gives me that idea that something else is now going to happen, but we just have to wait and see for ourselves!
