Sam Fischer & Demi Lovato 'What Other People Say' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone!

In today's music video review, I will be watching Sam Fischer and Demi Lovato's collaboration on 'What Other People Say' which is a collaboration that I didn't know I needed...until now! Sam rose to fame after releasing one of his previous singles called 'This City' and having features artists on multiple different versions including Kane Brown (who has worked on a Camila Cabello remix) and Anne Marie who's worked with Clean Bandit, Sean Paul, James Arthur and many more! So without any further delay, here's my thoughts on this video!

At the start of the music video, I could tell that the full video was going to be filmed on the train, as it's one of the only places that people are allowed to go nowadays, and it's a music video style I've not seen before! Before we saw either of the artists on the screen, there was a nice introduction shot of the orange sunset which would be the view outside of the train. Demi Lovato began with her opening lyrics which included 'I'm better than that', which referred to not taking after those who gave her the surname she has today, and trying to give up the bad experiences from her past. She went on to sing '...so I can go to heaven and never come back' which explain that she doesn't want to be pulled in and out of a good place, she just wanted to be happy, innocent and enjoy her life. Demi is seen in the music video with short purple hair and quite dark makeup, along with a brown oversized jacket which makes her look a lot more mature that in previous music videos, and also shows the sincerity in the lyrics of the song as she's not dancing around, but shows genuine emotion as during some of her vocals, she closes her eyes.

It was over to Sam to sing his verse of lyrics and he was dressed like an ordinary transport user, in a black and white patterned jacket with a light coloured shirt underneath. I like how both Demi and Sam are shot at different angles to show that they're both in the same environment, but it could also be a different environment as well. During Sam's verse, there are a lot of flashing lights, including some purple and red flashes which make the train seem like a moving nightclub and it's really great to watch. One of the lyrics that Sam sings include that he wanted to 'shelter from the boy I knew' which could explain that he has also grown up from the boy he used to be, and is happy with the direction that his life is going at the moment. He continues to explain that 'I could use some tape, I could use some glue' as although he's in a better place, there are small things along the way which need to be fixed, and I think that's something a lot of people can relate to. If people are having a successful and healthy life, there will still be little problems and worries that occur on the way, so the idea of using 'tape' or 'glue' simply explain that there are only some small issues that need to be resolved!

I loved the final shots of both Sam and Demi who are seen in shot together, both on top of the train with the nice night time sky, with the only lights coming from the city which can be seen in the far distance, but also transitioning to each of them sitting inside the train. They both sing such incredibly powerful notes, and their harmonies blend really well together. At the end of the video, you can see that they both look at eachother and smile, before both leaving the train and almost going their separate ways. I think that's one of the crazy things about public transport, as you're obviously told by family and friends 'don't talk to strangers', but in this case it's almost like they both had so much in common, and although the time they had together was short, it will be a short amount of time that neither of them will be able to forget!
