Hey all!
Here's another album review! This week I'm going to begin with Paloma Faith's called 'Infinite Things' as I'm presuming that's what many of us are thinking of doing once the second lockdown is eventually over!
1 - 'Supernatural'
This is a very strong start to the new album, with a really good beat behind the meaningful lyrics! I presume that this song is speaking more about the 'not so real' things; as she sings 'Close your eyes , let's believe in magic' (very catchy lyrics); and the words could signify that she's having crazily good dreams! Paloma's said it before, Only love can hurt like this...if you get the reference!
2 - 'Monster'
This sounds like a self reflection song based upon somebody's actions towards Paloma...turning her into a monster! She speaks about times that somebody has treated her wrong, or that she felt like she wasn't good enough, with lyrics in the second verse speaking about how 'a woman has taken the upper hand' and she 'cannot bite her tongue'; which indicate that she's a veryt out spoken lady (which is a good thing) because stereotypically, it's men that do the talking and women feel as if they can't compete, but in this case she is breaking the stereotype! I feel like the journey of the song goes from explaining the situation to expressing her new persona through singing the lyrics with such emotion and intenseness!
3 - 'Gold'
The next song is called 'Gold' and compared to the first songs, it's a little more toned down, but she explains very clearly that 'She has a feeling that tonight is on her time' with backing vocals stating 'I got I got it I got it, I'm shining, I'm Gold' - which is a self confidence song! There's a difference between confident and cocky, and I'm really happy to see this more innocent side to Paloma! I think these are the sorts of lyrics that I sing to myself, no matter how many negative I hear about me, or how many rejections I get in life. I know my own worth, and as listeners, she is stating through her own experiences that we all have a self worth that we need to cherish! 'I got a feeling that I'm gonna be alright' could add onto this meaning, stating that things might not be going great at the moment, but the tunnel is open and our life journey will continue step by step!
4 - 'Falling Down'
I think this is a standard love song where she is explaining her lust for somebody, but apparently it's 'never enough'. I believe it could be a song which could be addressing another girl who Paloma may be competing against, in terms of love. The words 'falling down' could be relating to how she is able to tempt this guy into loving her; explaining that the other girl will eventually 'be giving you up'! Go Paloma!
5 - 'Infinite Things'
The title of the album, and the fifth song on the playlist...is it any good? 'My heart has been so broken by the things I've seen' is one of the jumping out lyrics in the second verse of the song which could signify that she has been through several bad experiences that she might want to try and forget about. In the chorus, she sings about different experiences she has had through varying lyrics; including a girl, which reminds her of herself...or the joy and chaos that she's seen in her life and trying to find the right words, but admitting that they fail her. She seems to be singing about the development of where she was and where she is now, thanking the people that have been there for her...explaining the infinite things that make her who she is today? Maybe? Not sure, but there were infinite things I could have written about that song...
6 - 'If This Is Goodbye'
Song number 6 began with an instrumental with a simultaneous piano and guitar tune. In the song she seems to open up emotionally, speaking about the bad things she's experienced in life, but admitting that she has never had to use these words before; 'I surrender and I hate it'! It's the most powerful song on the album so far with a variety in pitch of the singing in the chorus, which sounds absolutely gorgeous must I add! I can't remember work out what the song is about, but it was a great 4 minutes of my life!
7 - 'Better Than This'
By listening to the lyrics of the song, but also reading the song title over and over and over, the song seems to either explain that however she is currently doing in life, she and the mystery person she is singing about can do better, by going to great places or doing things that she likes to do. It's one of those motivational songs to explain that things can only go up from where we are, or, she's reflecting on the bad situations or arguements she is having with somebody, stating that they are better than a squabble or two! This is another powerful song on the album with a relatable topic highlighting around the motion of doing better.
8 - 'Me Time'
The next song on the album sounds almost like a different singer, as the pitch of the song was incredibly low to start with. The tune's lyrics simply about how people have their own opinions about her, with 'too many noises and thoughts' in her head...and working out that she wants to have some time for herself to reflect who she wants to be! In her head, some of the things she speaks about are what she wants to do during her 'free time', new places she can 'go to time', admitting that she'll be fine, she just needs to have a break from real life every so often...which isn't a bad thing! I really liked this song, most certainly one of my favourites from the album because it's such a unique style of song with the variety of singing techniques from beginning to end, and it's also really relatable! Everybody needs their own time to self reflect on life, so why not also sing a song about that too!
9 - 'If Loving You Was Easy'
No, this isn't a spin off of Union J's song 'Loving You Is Easy'. They were a band from The X Factor UK for anyone reading this and saying 'Huh?'. Ok, back to Paloma! In this song she refers to 'perfect being impossible' and how that meaning is circulated on the radio, which is true. Her overall message from this song is that she wouldn't want to be with this secret lover, if it was easy. 'Don't forget we've got too much to lose' and 'Think about everything we've been through' are some of the words at the start of the verses, which could explain that the couple have been through enough good and bad things in their life, that if love is such a difficult thing, how have they lasted for so long?!? In short, is love isn't difficult and there aren't struggles, then it's not worth it. If everything is too perfect, life will be boring and you won't be able to overcome personal challenges or barriers and self develop as an individual!
10 - 'Beautiful & Damned'
'You have earned your place is Heaven' are some of the opening lyrics in this song, which Paloma sings about if this is the last time she'll be able to see someone, she'll continue to see them again in the afterlife because of how they have made a positive impact on her life thus far! She also speaks in the song of a 'ride or die' which are people you can rely on in any situation (even bad ones), up until the point you die...and that links to this new world of Heaven which is sung about in this song! The word 'Damned' refers to suffering, so although you're in a lovely relationship, you're going to suffer with them in Heaven! Alright Paloma, a little bit deep here...
11 - 'I'd Die For You'
In this song, Paloma admits her love and affection for somebody stating that she would give her lungs to someone so they can breathe, or her eyes so they can see. Maybe the person that she is singing about doesn't feel confident within themselves or their body, and this song is dedicated to ensuring they understand their worth. Paloma sings the words 'don't you cry' as it could have been a difficult situation to build a relationship with this individual, and although there have been stories spread about Paloma in the past, she truly means the words that she sings! It almost even sounds like there is a heart pumping in the background instrumental of the song, making the song that little bit more relatable!
12 - 'Living with a Stranger'
In the beginning lyrics of the song, she talks about conversations that she has, without people talking, the sound of footsteps, without people walking and a variety of other house issuses, including the bed not being done or dirty kitchen dishes still in the sink! She goes on to sing the lyrics 'the day we traded pleasure for pain', so potentially the song is about a hookup that turned into a relationship? Another meaning could be that as somebody in between a friend and a lover was a pleasurable thing for both parties, but once they become more serious, it ruined their initial friendship? Maybe she's singing about a different person to her current relationship, but she is still able to think about the experiences she was having with them...good or bad! She also refers to the situations as 'negative space' and would prefer to live on her own than a stranger...what do those lyrics mean? Well, that's my job, but it's a weird set of lyrics to analyse! Maybe the lover has turned into a stranger but never being there, dying or constantly be out with other girls?!?
13 - 'Last Night on Earth'
What a great way to end an album that has been written during the world pandemic...'This could be our last night on Earth'...hopefully not Paloma! But the song speaks about not going to sleep until they resolve any issues that they are going through, and that in some circumstances, neither party knows why there are arguements! It's a natural feeling to be angry, but if you don't know why you feel like that, then you either need to go to anger management sessions, speak to a lover, friend, family member or a stranger...if you really have to! (Just hopefully not the stranger than Paloma sings about in song twelve! I think the overall meaning of this song is that no matter how many arguements she has with the lover, she still wants a hug at the end of the night, and to talk it over...just in case, this is the last night they are able to see or speak to eachother before death, or their transition to Heaven!
Great album! I must rate this at least a 9 out of 10! I love Paloma Faith and her music is always so interesting. I don't think I hated any of the songs on the album, but I do definitely have my favourites. Those include; 'Supernatural', 'Gold', 'Better Than This' and 'Me Time'! Alright peace out from me!
