Hey all,
For today's music review, I will be watching and listening to Olivia Rodrigo's debut single 'drivers license'. She is an American actress who is most recently known for being in 'High School Musical' the musical (not to be confused with the original set of films with Zac Efron)...and at only 17 years of age, her single has broken records already, beating British pop artist Ed Sheeran as being the quickest and youngest person to have a No.1 record!
I must firstly say that I still so shocked and surprised that Olivia has only just released her first single! She's got an amazing vocal range, and I think this is only the start for her. Within a week she has amassed just over 800k subscribers to her YouTube channel and has released a YouTube premiere video which was 27 minutes long, discussing the creation and release of the music video!
At the beginning of the music video you can see a car driving down a highway in the night, with the first lyrics of the song stating that 'I got my drivers license last week' which maybe signifies that she is taking steps to become an individual and take control of her own life. Some of the introduction shots include her walking down the road with green trousers, some shots inside her house with her silhouette being positioned in different players, and her singing along and playing on a very small keyboard (which is probably a toy, but it's still got keys); so it could identify that he has been writing music for many years, and that was how she began creating the tunes for the music.
One of the lines in the song states 'I don't know how you could be okay, now that I'm gone' which could signify that somebody who she fell in love with, maybe had a change of mind and decided that Olivia wasn't right for them - well, they've missed out big time because now she's written a No.1 world selling hit about that unlikely person! She goes on to say 'You said forever, now I walk alomne past your stree' which could also identify that they lived very close to eachother, and although she wants to try and forget about them and move on, something still brings her back to look at the house that they probably spent a lot of time together.
Throughout the music video there are lots of fast paced shots, varied camera angles and so many outfit changes which bring the emotion of the video out very clearly...and you even hear Olivia passionately saying the word 'f*cking' to describe how she truly feels. There are other shots including that of somebody's back, with digital memories being shown, almost like a projector...and also many shots of Olivia driving a car with purple, blue and black lights in the background which make the scene really colourful and could be the colours that she most identifies with in terms of her emotions at the moment - red is usually signified with love, and there most certainly any sort of love or romance being sung about in the song, but instead the red that is used could identify her anger and regret.
Other lyrics include 'I know we weren't perfect, but I never felt this way for no-one' which is definitely a message that other people could listen to. I feel like a lot of relationships or just families in general with have arguments, debates or disagreements, but that's just part of ordinary life, and it almost seems that the people Olivia is singing about, didn't even want to try and fix any problems, but instead just wanted to walk out and try to have an easier relationship with somebody else. Towards the end of the video, you see Olivia standing on the dark street alone, with only a street light to keep her company...showing her the reality of life at this current moment, and that being alone isn't a bad thing...but some people would much rather be in love with somebody that care about, especially when they think the other person feels the same way. The music was directed by Dillon Cohen and I think it was really well executed, so I think I must write a music video review of the song, and I believe there is more still to come!
