Hey!
Another day another reaction! In today's post I am going to listening to the songs on Welshman Novo Amor's album 'Cannot Be, Whatsoever'. Without further ado, here we go!
1 - 'Opaline'
The first song on the album is called 'Opaline' which sounds like a mix of a festive and an emotional song at the same time. It's got quite a distinct sound, and is definitely a great opening to the album!
2 - 'I Feel Better'
Some of the lyrics I can hear from this song are 'Don't make a mess of my room' which could signify that whoever he is letting in, may be messy...but that's just purely stating the obvious! The song is also filled with a variety of guitar solos which occur throughout the last part of the song, and they're really great to listen to! I think in the song, the artist is seeking some form of validation of feeling better, as long as somebody tells him he'll be okay!
3 - 'Decimal'
After listening to the first few songs on the album, it seems like this artist has a really relaxing and soothing singing voice, rather than screaming or shouting the words. I'm not too sure of what the songs mean, but in this one there are words that include 'Is this how I should feel?' which signify he's entering unknown territory in either self discovery or a new journey in his life.
4 - 'No Plans'
After listening to just under a minute of the song, I was already head bopping along to the guitar solos and the dramatic increase of volume of the instruments. The title of this song suggests that there is no set journey that this artist is on, but instead taking life as it comes and embracing any opportunities that come his way. That's how I like to be as well...I know I have done some great things in life, but I'm currently on a journey of self discovery, trying to work out exactly what I want to do. In the song there are other lyrics that include 'Where did it all go wrong?' which could mean that he has done something that he regrets, or is in a difficult place in his life that he is trying to get out of. The song ends with a dramatic guitar and drum ending, and is definitely the one that showcases the most emotion so far!
5 - 'Birdcage'
Without reading into the lyrics too much, this is another difficult song to work out the meaning for, but some of the lyrics I heard include 'I think I'm forgetting how to breathe out?' - I think...so maybe he is trying to remember how to do simple things in life, and not thinking about too many confusing things! When I hear the word 'cage' I automatically think of being stuck or trapped somewhere and you're still able to view the world, but from one perspective only...so there could be a hidden meaning of that in the song too!
6 - 'Keep Me'
The next song on the album speaks about something that has been on the artist's mind, but he is unable to find the right words to describe what he has been thinking about. The chorus of the song includes the words 'Keep me on fire' which could either suggest that he wants to embrace this moment for as long as possible (and burning is usually a slow way to die); or, he wants somebody to make him feel like he's 'on fire' but not literally! The song is clearly about somebody that he loves or that is close to him, and he wants them to keep him honest, kind and to be their 'finish line', when they feel like they have won!
7 - 'Halloween'
Right, this song is called 'Halloween' and the artist sings about 'hitting his head on the edge of the sink', which sounds painful...but wishes that his friends were there with him that night. In the song, some of the opening lyrics to a verse are 'I made a bet that I'd forget my name', 'By the age of 28, I can barely stay awake'; and this could either be related to some form of addiction, or could be jokily saying that there's no point in making a bet to try and forget something, when instead he can't even keep his eyes open! He clearly sings about his friendships in the song, and actually it could be a good message to send out to the world, that at some points in your life, you might not cherish your friendships but sometimes they will be there when you need them...just ask! He goes on to sing lyrics; 'All the good things have left my mouth' which could refer to the good moments from that specific Halloween, as there were more negatives that positives.
8 - 'Statue Of A Woman'
It seems like this song was in fact an instrumental song rather than something with lyrics, but it was VERY relaxing to listen to
9 - 'If We're Being Honest'
Another song with a confusing message, but again I think this song is to do with a friend or lover as they planned on meeting at the chapel pines purely because they can 'feel American' but for some reason it didn't happen. After a quick google search, there is apparently a second meaning of the song, which includes thoughts about the pandemic and the current situation of the world at the moment; and with the last lyrics of the song 'If I could, someday I'd like to say I'm letting go' clearly establish that although there are great memories or thoughts to have happened, it's time to forget about it and begin thinking about different things in life.
10 - 'Guestbook'
The final song on the album actually reminds me of an online virtual world game I used to play called 'Smallworlds' (which was sadlt discontinued in 2018), and there was an item called a 'Guestbook' which people were able to write in! I'd love to know what the meaning behind the song is!
Ok so that was a slightly awkward album review, as I couldn't really come up with meanings behind the songs. Maybe it's because I've not really listened to much Indie music before, or because his voice was SO soft, I couldn't actually hear him singing the lyrics! Overall, the tunes were very relaxing to listen to, especially the ones without vocals (and I thought my Spotify has broken for some reason), but yeah, I need to probably and start trying to listen to new music so I can work out the meanings and understandings of not only the artists, but also the songs! Either way, at least I have discovered a new Welsh artist...even if I couldn't tell you what the songs mean!
