Hey everyone!
Today's music review is quite exciting, as Jonas Brother Nick Jonas has released his 4th solo studio album called 'Superman' which seems to be all about love, relationships, sexual encounters and his description of a relationship that clearly has its ups and downs, but he's happy that they have worked out. All of the songs are great, and I thought I would write a quick little review of each of the first songs just from the first impressions! I hope you enjoy the reviews!
1 - 'Don't Give Up On Us'
The first song on the album is a very good introduction to the new era of Nick Jonas, and it seems to have a variety of different instruments from maracas to drums. Some of the lyrics for this particular song include 'I can't help wondering are you loving someone else' which could imply that Nick is really into this new relationship and he just wants to make sure he's getting the same love back that he's giving out. He goes on to sing the words 'don't have no meaning without you, all I want is us' which further addresses that he wants to spend a future with this individual. He further goes on to explain that they have a 'different kind of love' which might mean that they are perfectly matched for eachother, and they are not likely to be able to find anybody else with the same qualities. With the title of the song, it's almost like this is a song to avoid a breakup or a divorce from taking place, explaining the love he has for somebody, which is lovely to hear in a song!
2 - 'Heights'
The next single is called 'Heights' which instantly brought the idea that this song could be about falling in love or out of love and ending up in a completely different place than where you wanted to be. Some of the lyrics in this song include 'don't give it up just for somebody, that would be too much' which might mean that his secret lover is thinking about ending their relationship for somebody else, rather than trying to fix what they already have. This particular song sounds like it has a really dance like R&B backing track with electronic sounds to bring the track to life. Other lyrics include 'we don't need to get so heated' which might explain that there are some difficult conversations or situations that often result in a form of argument, with Nick stating that he just wants to talk. He goes on to speak about practice and patience which seem to be two very important factors within a relationship, by practicing things over and over again until you can do them, and being patient with eachother as you're not going to have a 100% smooth ride of love. He explains that when you love so high, you're bound to fall together' which suggests that as a couple, even if one person seems to get stressed, angry or any other type of emotion, it affects both people in that relationship as much as eachother, and with the included backing vocals, the track sounds really lovely, especially when Nick sings some high notes too!
3 - 'Spaceman'
The next single seems to speak about a lot of things that we have been going through during the pandemic over the last year. The first lyrics include 'I feel like a spaceman' adding that the television tells him what to think and the continuous bad news makes him think that he should drink. I really like the overall mood and pace of this song, and the different scales that Nick sings throughout the song. Other lyrics suggest that this current situation is only temporary with people saying that if you vote, change will happen...and he also describes coming home and taking his mask off as soon as he is back. Nick also compares himself to a spaceman and says that we weren't here to be living alone, which might suggest that he's got a partner or friends that are elsewhere and it's almost like he is in his own little Universe, unable to see or speak to other people, which makes it seem like such an abnormality from ordinary life. I think is my favourite song out of the first 3 so far, but let's see what the other songs sound like.
4 - '2Drunk'
In this next song, the lyrics make it clear that this is a song about alcohol. The opening of the song sounds like a really cool drum beat, with intro lyrics including 'turn the tv off' and 'make the bed' which suggest that it's just another day in the house without anywhere to go or anyone to see. In the chorus of the song he speaks about not being able to drink with friends and 'breaking all the rules that I set myself' which could have been to be healthier, but now we're in a pandemic, those rules have all gone out of the window. It's clear that Nick is a mummy's boy as he says 'what would mamma say?', suggesting that she might not too be impressed with the decision he is taking of drinking all the time, whether he's alone or with friends. He sings I'm 'too drunk and I'm in my feelings, oh well now I'm high as a ceiling' which have a really nice singing rhythm to them, but also explain that he feels like he's in a good mood because of the alcohol he has drunk. I feel like a lot of students might be able to relate to this, especially if they are stuck in their University accomodations away from friends and family, but still want to enjoy a good night in...drink is one of the easiest ways for young people to do that!
5 - 'Delicious'
The introduction of this song sounds like a variety of old television sounds which seems to transition into a beat with trombones and other interesting musical instruments. The overall mood of this song sounds like Nick is impressed by how somebody looks, explaining that there's 'something in the way you move your thighs', adding that everyone wants to take a bite and that they're 'watching you' which could explain that the music video for this song might be in a bar or a club, with this mystery figure as the main focus. Throughout the song he continues to sing a variety of seductive and flirty lyrics, including 'baby you know I want it, you're so delicious', which is a simple way of saying that this female is very attractive and he might want to get to know her better. He also describes this individual as 'dripping in definition' which might suggest that this person has a slim and almost athletic body type and he's trying to compliment her in as many ways as he can, so he can show her off.
6 - 'This Is Heaven'
This song also starts with a short drum beat, before the opening lyrics suggest this is another song explaing what Heaven feels like to Nick. He says 'what if we found a way to get lost without fear, leave it all behind us we'll escape it' which might suggest that at this current point they could just be friends, and the thought of transitioning from a friendship to something more serious, starts by giving something a try. He explains this particular situation as Heaven by saying 'I don't know how this could get much better than you and me, here right now', almost suggesting that there is no other person he would have the same compatability with. he also says 'don't blink you're the centre of my attention' which could also mean that whilst they're both in the mood, they need to try and enjoy it as much as they can, so in order for her not to miss out on anything, her eyes should stay open, and he might also want to look into her eyes to get that look of approval.
7 - 'Sexual'
In this song, I didn't seem to hear any of the lyrics sung in the chorus as they were really high pitched, but I heard the words sex and sexual which makes sense due to the title of the song. At the beginning of the song, Nick seems to set the scene with this mystery woman, explaining that she can have her head back, Marvin Gaye is on the track and they can keep going until 5 in the morning, which suggests all sorts of bedroom activity all night long. Nick explains that she is the view, and describes seeing the pink sunset and sunrise, adding 'no intermission', which suggests that this type of feeling is regular. I don't really need to explain this one anymore and I think you get the point...
8 - 'Deeper Love'
Nick seems to want to know what the idea of deeper love is, rather than just being in a short term relationship. His opening lyrics include 'got a feeling you know what's on my mind' which suggests that he knows what this mystery lover thinks he wants in a relationship. He sings the words 'you pull me closer to the truth, now I'm hanging onto every word you say' which suggests that piece by piece it's being revealed to him how the other person feels, and by 'hanging onto words', this suggests that any conversations they are having, could be discussing where their relationship stands or what future plans there are in the long term. I think people in these types of situations often know that they want more from the other person, but just want them to be open and honest with their emotions, explaining how they feel and to confirm that they feel the same way. Towards the end of the song, there were a variety of ways that the words 'deeper love' were sang, in differrent pitches and also with a variety of higher 'ooh' sounds which made the final part of the song stand out quite a lot, and that little section has made this one of my favourite songs from the album!
9 - 'If I Fall'
From the beginning to the end of this song, I was singing along even though I didn't know the words or the song. He explains at the beginning that 'it's your fault, you came in like a cannonball' which suggests that he might not have been ready for love, but somebody came in at the right time, and almost made it impossible for him to say no to love. Throughout the song he explains that 'this is the beginning, but this is the last time that I'm falling' with various other ways of singing that same line, but I really like the overall meaning of the song. Just from those lyrics, he seems to explain that he's not going to be romantically falling for anybody new, until he falls again for this lover of his, which is a really nice thing to hear if somebody is singing this about you. Nick says I 'put my faith in you, it's just something that I do' which could explain that he's a very trusting person, especially when it comes to his heart and continues to sing the lyrics that he won't fall for somebody new. Compared to some of the other songs on his album, the chorus is very fast paced and quite lively which makes the song a little bit more interesting to listen to, and it's another one of my favourites from this new album!
10 - 'Death Do Us Part'
Out of all of the songs on this album, Nick starts by singing the lyrics 'you could put me in a coffin, I'm always going to find your love' which could explain that even if he's dead, he's still going to try and come back into this mysterious lover's lifel. He adds that there's no stopping even when he's high above, 'spread my ash in the sea, I know you're gonna find me and go right back to the start', which could mean that he might try and leave signals for the person he leaves behind. Other lyrics in the song include that this special person 'turned from a friend, to a lover to my wife' showing the journey that these two people have been on before getting to where they are today. I heard a lot of other references to cars, drinks and different types of alcohol beverages and I'm not too sure why they were all being mentioned, but it could be things that he wants to try and enjoy whilst he's alive...or that's maybe where he wants his ashes to be spread? I'm not too sure, and I'd rather not talk about death right now, so Nick, let's go to your final song...
11 - 'Nervous'
The final song on the song is called 'Nervous' which seems to explain that although he's been in a relationship with somebody for a long time, he will still be nervous in front of them. He sings 'there's a part of me that will always be breathless when you speak' which suggests that when she speaks, he might get goosebumps, or he just feels like he is a very lucky man that's he's being spoken to by this individual. In the song he also questions whether this lover has told him whether she loves him or not and he sings that 'after all this time, you still make me nervous' which could happen if you're in a relationship with somebody that you truly love and feel comfortable around, because even when you do find 'that one', it might not seem real straightaway. I think the fact that Nick is able to show this more affectionate and reserved side on one of his songs on the album makes me respect him a lot more, as he is able to show his emotions through lyrics and show that he has found true love and married the person that means the most to him!
I hope you enjoyed this album review of Nick Jonas' new album 'Superman'! My favourite songs on the album were 'Spaceman', 'Deeper Love', 'If I Fall' and 'Nervous'. Until my next album review, I'll speak to you soon!
