May 2021: Some of the songs you SHOULD be listening to; including global sensation Olivia Rodrigo!

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone!

May has been quite a busy month for me, but also in the music world, with lots of EP's, albums and singles being released! I thought I would share a quick summary of some videos that were in my YouTube suggestions, and if there are any other tunes from this month that you think made this month memorable, comment them down below! Without further delay, here's the songs with their reviews!

Courtney Stodden 'Pleasure' (6th May 2021)

The first music video on this list is from ex Big Brother housemate Courtney Stodden who is most known for being an American model. In this video she is seen wearing a variety of glittery and sexy outfits, at a very secluded location which seems to be a private hideout zone. It's quite interesting how the venue she is dancing is has mostly brown and black colours, and her outfits help her stand out, especially with her incredibly blonde hair. 'If you're looking for trouble, you're in the right place' are some of the lyrics that she sings multiple songs throughout the song, and this signifies that she is describing herself as trouble! Towards the final part of the music video she is seen teasing one of her male counterparts, dancing next to him while is is strapped to a petrol pump with handcuffs. The final shot of the music video sees her wearing a black leather jacket and white dress, about to drive away on a motorbike. I cannot believe she's currently on 26 years old! She's such a good looking lady with a potentially success career in music, so let's see if she will be releasing any new music or even a new album this year.

Conan Gray 'Astronomy' (7th May 2021)

Whilst working as a radio show host, I heard a few of Conan's songs and fell in love almost straightaway as his voice is super relaxing and he's a really good looking guy with long brown curly hair. In this new song, he sings the words 'Young love don't last for life' which is something that a lot of those in the younger generations don't seem to understand, as they are continuing to fall in and out of love, wondering if they are doing something wrong or not living upto life's 'expectations' of what a perfect relationship should be like, when in fact, it's due to being young and not knowing what they want. This music video includes a lot of interesting and unique camera angles of Conan in various environments and locations such as a bedroom, a room with rain falling down the side of a building and also in the back of a van. Other lyrics in this song include 'The only mistake we made, was that we didn't run' which makes me feel that whoever he is singing about, he missed an opportunity to be with the person forever, and it was the only chance he had of being in a loving relationship with this individual.

St. Vincent 'Down' (10th May 2021)

The beginning of this video gives me the impression that we are going back in time through somebody's memories, as the music sounds like we are reversing through time. The singer in this music video gives me the impression that she's different from others, and that she has a unique personality and style. She can be seen wearing a white shirt, brown leather jacket and a green and purple head scarf. In the video she seems to find a key and enters a room where she is clearly trying to find evidence or personal information about an individual without being caught. The extra graphics and visuals make the video seem like a comedy detective programme, along with the cheery kind of background music with great guitar playing. The song's lyrics explain that St. Vincent is potentially having issues with a partner or an ex lover as the lyrics include 'You hit me one time...Imagine my surprise when you hit me two times you got yourself a fight' which show that she's a strong female who is going to stand up for herself.

Lovejoy 'Taunt' (10th May 2021)

The next song on the list is called 'Taunt' which is said repeatedly at the beginning of the video by a female robot voice. This particular music video is very interesting as the main guy is just seen sitting down the entire time in the middle of the video, with his friends performing, dancing and playing instruments around him. The song includes exposing somebody who always made excuses to leaving the dining table, and also was labelled as 'insecure' throughout the song. The final lyrics of the video are 'I took it as a taunt' which seems to be the theme of the entire song, as somebody is clearly trying to rub these boys up the wrong way!

Lovejoy 'One Day' (10th May 2021)

Another music video by Lovejoy, and this song is called 'One Day'. At the beginning of the video, one of the members in the band spots their guitarist on the bus, and they begin singing and performing another one of their songs at a social distance. The entire music video has been edited in a square mode which makes the entire filming process quite difficult as you have to make sure you can find the shots into a frame. The main singer explains why life is so 'f*cking inconsistent' and I can completely agree with that, as everyday is different to the day before. I think the theme of this song is for each of the guys to sing about what they all plan to do one day, such as looking into the future with the special person they are singing about, or a future partner that they haven't met at the moment!

Wolf Alice 'No Hard Feelings' (11th May 2021)

In this emotional song, Wolf seems to be singing about a relationship that she is no longer in, explaining that there are 'No Hard Feelings' then next time they meet up, and she understands that things happen for a reason. There are a lot of shots with limited movements and bundles of colour, with a shot of her embracing a male counterpart, which instantly includes some motion blur and pans. She is seen walking onto a bus and driving past this guy, who is left at the bus stop by himself. I think the meaning of the song is that some things just aren't meant to be, but it now allows both of them to find their perfect match, and be the drivers of their own life!

Tom Odell 'money' (12th May 2021)

The opening of this next music video starts with a coin spinning around on the table, with a various of fast paced shots showing Tom in a variety of different scenes and environments, such as in a swimming pool, on the shoot and inside his car. The theme of this song is clearly about making more money with Tom thanking God for his Gucci and Dior. Some of his lyrics include 'F*ck them it's all about me; which signifies that he is thinking about himself, and the plans that he has for his future. Especially in the current circumstances, it's definitely a song that a lot of people can relate to, including those who have sadly lost their jobs. The overall music video is quite entertaining to watch, as he shows his comedic side through his funny facial expressions, his dancing and the unique style of other video content shown in the video!

Olivia Rodrigo 'good 4 u' - (14th May 2021)

Up next is America's latest global sensation Olivia Rodrigo with her single 'good 4 u'. The beginning of the music video shows a variety of close up shots of her face, which slowly transitions into a shot of her arranging a presentation in a classroom. The next shot shows her in a cheerleading costume dancing in her white top and blue skirt, whilst singing a variety of lyrics that seem to be targeted at somebody who seems to be healthy and happy, but she doesn't really seemed interested in that person's life anymore. Her other lyrics include 'Maybe I'm too emotional, maybe you never cared at all' which lead to the final chorus of the song. These specific lyrics show that Olivia is either thinking that she was the problem in a particular friendship or relationship, or that she finally came to terms about the true reason why somebody wanted to be part of her life!

Bella Poarch 'Build A B*tch' (14th May 2021)

The overall theme of this music video covers the topic of having a 'perfect woman' where the singer Bella sings that sometimes guys want 'different ar*e or bigger boobs, blue eyes or brown', explaining that if that's what guys want, then she's not the right girl for them. the music video seems to get very dramatic towards the end of the video when Bella manages to free herself out of the machine and destroy the entire machine, causing it to blow up, but allowing the rest of the girls to be set free! It was a unique music video, but highlights a very important topic of not wanting everything to be perfect, and everyone has flaws and things that aren't perfect, so it's about getting used to it and accepting that!

Katy Perry 'Electric' (14th May 2021)

The next song on the list is a single called 'Electric' by Katy Perry who seems to be showcasing a brand new hairstyle of her long blonde hair. She is joined by Pokemon's Pikachu and is seen exploring different enrivonments in areas with lots of mountains and hills. I think the story behind the music video is that she used to be a busker with somebody by her side who made her confident enough to continue singing and turning her musical dreams into a successful career and lifestyle and she wanted to do the same for somebody else. Katy sings the words, 'There is no reason why this life can't be electric', which signifies that something amazing was going to happen in the music video; and both her and Pikachu guide her to applying for a talent competition, which seems to impress the crowd. This story seems to explain how Katy got to where she was today, by having the right opportunities in her path to grasp, and appreciating the positive people in her life, avoiding any negativity or doubt, and being successful in where she wanted to go!

Central Cee 'Ruby' (16th May 2021)

This music video by 22 year old London Rapper Central Cee has been shot really well with a variety of interesting shots and graphics. The song he is singing is about a 15 year old girl called Ruby who has had a difficult life, and he seems to be explaining about what she has gone through in her life. In the music video he seems to explain that these 'roads are as cold as ice' and that if people don't like the cold then they should stay inside. He also explains that if you get yourself in too much of a bad place, it could affect your mental state, and he also says that selfishness is a foolish game - which are things that a lot of people can relate to; especially by wanting everything to happen for you, when you're not helping anybody else with their own issues. Towards the end of the song, he is seen with a group of guys wearing black jackets and trousers, explaining that 'my hood don't discriminate', and that everybody is treated the same.

Lil Nas X 'Sun Goes Down' (21st May 2021)

Before the music video started, I knew that this was going to be a really creative video, as the opening shot was a close up shot of Lil Nas X's eyes which had a purple lens, before transitioning to a scene of him sitting next to an alternative ego of himself working at Taco Bell. In this music video, he explains the difficulty of being gay whilst he was growing up, and the transition into him being more confident within himself and how he has evolved over the years. One of the scenes shows him attending the Prom of 2017 (which is probably when he graduates University); and with the purple, pink and blue scenes, the camera shines straight into his eyes once again, showing the purple lens which was highlighted at the beginning of the music video. I think it's amazing how somebody who says he didn't have many friends, wasn't sure if his lips were too big or wondered if he was too dark, has finally had the platform that they deserve to succeed in life. Everyone has doubts about themselves, their bodies and how they act, look, sound, but once you realise that nobody else is judging you, it's you judging yourself, then you start to love and appreciate yourself a lot more. Good on Lil Nas X, and at only 22 years of age, and 13 million+ YouTube subscribers, I'm sure he will be creating music for a long time into the future!

Zoe Wees 'Hold Me Like You Used To' (21st May 2021)

At the beginning of this music video, Zoe explained that this soong was dedicated to her Great Grandmother. The majority of the video was shot in black and white with various lighting set-ups throughout the entire video. She sings the words 'When we lose the ones we love, I was getting used to used to, having you with me so, why you gotta leave' which are all lyrics to describe her upset of losing somebody close in her family. She goes on to say 'I need you here with me' which suggests that she had an incredibly close bond with her Great Grandmother. In the music video, there are several shots of Zoe sitting at a dining table with a blurred figure on the other side of the table, which probably resembles the missing piece of her family tree. Zoe goes on to sing that she wants to feel ok, but after losing a family member or a friend, it's quite difficult to just forget about them and move on with your life, which is exactly what they would want you to do, otherwise you will just be sad for your entire life. This was a very emotional song, and I have loved listening to Zoe's new music, so thought this was a great song for her to release; as she is opening up with her true emotions at this current moment in time, and putting the energy into making sure her Great Grandmother's legacy holds on!

Anne-Marie & Niall Horan 'Our Song' (23rd May 2021)

The next song is a collaboration by ex-One Direction band member Niall Horan and British singer/songwriter Anne-Marie. They are both seen sitting next to their cars, with Anne-Marie in the driving seat, driving the both of them down a country road whilst also throwing roses out of the car. Anne-Marie sings about waking up alone and not 'thinking about him for days' which shows that she has moved on from the relationship she was previously in, although she seems to remember it when she hears their song on the radio. Towards the end of the music video, Anne-Marie is seen driving their 'PTT 304' car speeding up and ending up surrounded by policeman as they had left a car with its door open in the middle of the road. Whoops! Also, Anne Marie's new album 'Therapy' is to be released on 23rd July 2021!

P!NK 'All I Know So Far' (27th May 2021)

The final song on today's list is calld 'All I Know So Far', by P!NK! She explains that she wishes she would be able to choose her own destiny rather than having to read a book and follow the rules. In the music video she seems to explain that it's better to be proud of who you are, and fight those demons or individuals who tell you to act a particular way. in one of the future scenes of the music video, she is seen wearing a ripped white t-shirt and dark blue jeans surrounded by a variety of individual eyes, with Cher being projected on the top of a boat (which is something I never thought I was going to say, until I watched this video!). She is seen to be on a boat with a very attractive man whose hair was the only real head of hair. The final part of the music video sees P!NK fighting with various people, whilst wearing a black and white suit and a black hat. 'They can't tell you to change who you are' are other lyrics that she sings, which resonate with me quite a lot, as it's important to just be true to yourself and also by being yourself. It seems that in the video, her family, friends and other celebrity friends are featured to bring more emotion to the song and its lyrics. The final part of the music video sees P!Nk holding one of her children close, before they get covered in fire and the lyrics singing 'I'll be with you until the world blows up'. Quite a dramatic end to the music video, but it shows how long she is willing to stay with her family until she is physically no longer here to do that!

Thank you for reading and I will be back soon!
