Hey all!
I've got one more music review for you today! This one is from Mae Muller. On Spotify it labels this as a 'single' but there's 8 songs, so it's probably an EP or an album! I don't really know, so let's just analyse the 8 songs I can see! Just before listening to it, it might be about love or it could relate to life, where nobody can help her, even a very special or important person in her life (known as 'you')!
1 - 'dependent'
On this first song, I actually tried to beat box along with the instruments, but I didn't sound great. In this song she admits that she doesn't want to be dependent on anybody because then she will lose her independance as it's 'hanging by a thread'. She goes on to admit that her friends think she's crazy as she speaks about this situation with her friends, but she has never fallen in love with someone before. One of the things that usually happens in life, especially when it comes to love, is that people often over think too much about situations rather than naturally letting things happen, and that's the underlying meaning behind this first track on the EP!
2 - 'so annoying'
This song simply states that love is annoying, as one minute you could be in love with somebody and then all of a sudden you have issues/problems with that person. Some of the lyrics in the song include 'Everytime I get a text I hope it's you' and if she receives any phone calls, she might answer it but also might ignore it...and that's the mind game love playing with you! It's quite a relatable song, as people can transition in and out of love and feel all sorts of emotions, but that's what life is all about! Give things a go, fail and succeed, fail again and then succeed even more, fall in love..and the rest is history...unless you fall in love more than once...
3 - 'plot twist'
This song is a collaboration with Kenny Beats (an American producer and singer), but yeah anyways! I think this song is about potentially falling in love with somebody who should have either been just a friend, or that she's quite lucky to have fallen into a relationship with somebody she had dreams about; saying if they look like James Dean, she's interested!
4 - 'HFBD'
Before Mae even began singing this song, I know the song title was something about a birthday; think the full title is Happy F*cking Birthday? This is one of those emotional breakup songs, where she admits to being left under the Eiffel Tower for hours in France, noticing that he was speaking to another day. She goes on to say she wishes 'his birthday is the worst day of the year'; maybe because he cheated, or just didn't treat her right. Whatever the situation, I'm sure the unlucky knows that this song has been written about him, and instead of being angry with the situation, she adds that she will be happy with her new man! You go girl; we don't have time for trashy men in our lives in 2020!
5 - 'nails so long'
I think this song is about a relationship where the decided to cut somebody off with her long nails...I'm sure she didn't literally cut this person, but instead she just ended their bond. She says that the guy got 'too attached' and she should feel sad, but she says she doesn't care, questioning the words 'guilt and regret' as words she doesn't understand. It's like one of those songs where you understand something bad that a person has gone through and instead of being angry at them, you agree with the decisions that they make! I also love long nails, so it brought interesting visuals into my mind! My favourite song on the EP so far, purely for the song title.
6 - 'bad things'
The next song on the album is 'bad things' where she admits towards the beginning of the song that she is 'good at bad things' and 'wants to do bad things to you'; you, being the lucky person she was thinking about whilst writing these lyrics! She also goes on to say she knows if people can't love her, blaming herself for it not working on; especially in the lyrics 'I know it's tough to show me love when I'm the one who f*cks it up...I can't help it'. It seems like she's a closed book where she isn't able to let people into her life, romantically, because of some bad experiences she has gone through previously, or she's just not ready to commit to somebody yet! This is another of the songs that I love from this EP!
7 - 'wish u well'
Another song, another past relationship; speaking about memories including how they had to break into the ex lovers house as they didn't have keys, as well as some of the bad things they went through together. It's like a sad song which caused so many problems in the young relationship they had, but as they are getting older, she wishes the person well since she 'had to go' referring to the lover as a 'bro'. Not sure if she's singing about a max, an ex lover or her actual brother, but it's definitely about a dude!
8 ' 'work like that'
The final song on the EP is called 'work like that' where she initially exposes a 33 year old somebody who needs to keep their bits and pieces in their pants, after pretending that Mae wasn't their girlfriend...Awkward! 'If you've got someone else, you don't have me them' is a line in the verse that states somebody isn't able to play two people at the same time; explaining love doesn't work like that. It is true that you can't really be speaking to more than one person at the same time, unless ALL parties understand the situation. And in this case, it seems like the guy has made up his mind to be with someone else, and Mae sings lyrics which tell him to be on his tip toes and ready for what she's going to do! Oof!
This was definitely a rollercoaster of songs, and although Mae is only 23 years old (a year older than me); she sings about quite deep and meaningful topics such as love, breakups and the idea of cheating, without using the word 'cheating'. My favourites songs were Numbers 5 & 6 - 'nails so long' and 'bad things', but I'm sure there are only good things to come from this amazing singer/songwriter from London!
I'm done with music reviews for the day, but I will back very soon with new albums & EP's from artists including 'Novo Amor', 'Lilly Ahlberg', 'Olafur Arnalds', 'KSI' and 'Blackpink'! Until then, GOODBYE!
