Madison Beer 'BOYSH*T' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all,

For today's music video I thought I would review Madison Beer's new song 'BOYSH*T' which could be a simple play on words of the word BULLSH*T, but only something that boys are capable of doing. Madison initially rose to fame after Justin Bieber shared one of her singing covers on Twitter, and she obviously gained a lot of media attention and is now creating her own original music, releasing her first album back in 2020. This music video was released on 22nd January 2021 and without further delay, here's my review!

At the start of the music video there is a nice shot of what seems to be a location near the beach, and you see a car driving along the highway outside a block of apartments. On the balcony, Madison seems to be getting all close with a boy, but featured on the screen are the words 'the man who can't stop lying!' which is what this entire song is about and it's been set in the style of the opening to a short film or movie. She looks down the camera several times and begins singing the lyrics 'all this yelling kissing fighting...we could never see eye to eye' which means that this particular relationship she was having wasn't going very smoothly and admits to being 'back on her sh*t' and tempted to call him to see how he is doing, which could just be describing some of her past behaviour when she has broken up with somebody, rather than just being able to move on and forget about them.

The next part of the video shows her walking into a living room with some of her girls sitting at the dining table, sitting infront of a framed picture that is on the wall behind them. She's seen dialling a number on her old styled telephone, and one of the girls closes the door...almost as if they are about to have a 'girls only' meeting and no boys are invited. She's wearing a white corset with matching earrings, situated in a room that has a lot of vintage items and colour scheme. The chorus of the song has the lyrics 'I just can't understand you, because I don't speak boysh*t' - which could just be a simple way of not being able to understand lies, or why a boy would lie to her. In the video, there is a lesson which seems like she's teaching some of the other girls about dealing with boysh*t, and they've all got their pens and papers at the ready, as if they are going to write a lot of notes of things to watch out for.

Other lyrics that she goes on to sing include 'I'm moving on until you try to act your age' which could explain that this particular lover she is trying to build a relationship with might be acting childish, or just acting in a way that isn't what somebody of their age should be doing. There are then multiple shots of her and this mysterious boy appearing in and out of a shadow which transition nicely into eachother, but it could also be hinting at the fact that they are really close and they have a romantic connection, but they have to go separate ways due to the behaviour of the boy. Just before this scene you can see her on the phone talking with the boy, almost trying to listen to his lies but then saying 'blah blah blah' towards the camera as she know what he is saying is untrue.

The final scene shows a group of girls against a light grey wall, with Madison appearing more and more sexy throughout the final seconds in the music video, and also snippets of some of the previous scenes being shared, before you see her lying on a table or a sofa looking straight into the camera once again, with a 'The End' sign on the screen, signifying that this is the end of the movie.
