Hey all!
The songs below were uploaded to YouTube between the 18th and 20th June 2020 (mid lockdown listening) and I thought I would share some of my basic thoughts and opinions on some of them! It includes music from controversial YouTube creator Danielle Cohn (known as Dani Cohn online) and international stars including GABEL, Julia Beautx and Denny Caknan! Have a little read below!
KYLE - Bouncin (18th June 2020)
This track was released on 18th June as a fundraiser to help promote the advancements and protection of Black people in America, allowing people to donate to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. The introduction of the video sees him walking to a piano which sets a nice transition into a variety of other well edited shots. During the middle of the video, there is a change in video style, with a variety of layouts (including freeze frames, image thumbnails and collages). He wanted to shout out to his mum and his accountant which I found really interesting...and that his cheques is the ONLY thing not bouncing...so it looks like KYLE’s probably been enjoying his lockdown! Either way, I hope you enjoy the music video, because I did! And I like the little shoutout he gave to his family and his team at the end where he explains briefly that the people at school thought he would never be famous...and now he’s got over 1 million people supporting his music journey on YouTube alone! Never say never!
Dani Cohn - Do It Better (18th June 2020)
I know Danielle Cohn as the ‘young girl on YouTube who always pops up on my feed’. I had no idea she had any music videos out, so when I saw this trending on my feed I decided to have a quick watch! What I find very scary is that she is surrounded by a lion in the majority of the video and she could be eaten at any point...but the location that the music has been shot at is really amazing! The variation of clothing choices are really interesting and she looks like a young Love Islander...and when she’s 18, I’m sure she’ll apply (if the show is still going then??!!). This song is also about love, and instead of talking about somebody she would LIKE to be in love with, she explains that she’s already in love and she’s ‘blessed up’ - which is nice to hear, but also makes those who watch the video feel very insecure and sad about not having their own love story...Lol it’s true!
Jennifer Smestad - Half The Man (20th June 2020)
From the very first notes, I got the vibe that Jennifer’s song was a country song. With the bright sunlight in the background, it brings a really summery vibe to the music video and it includes some video clips from earlier moments of her life. There are some clear backing singers in the song and it goes really well with her voice! I believe the song is about her finding a man who is at least half as good as her dad! It’s a very well put together song and with over 500k views, I’m sure I’m not the only one with this viewpoint! Jennifer is also a really pretty woman and I’m sure this isn’t going to the final song she writes, so stay tuned for more of her work!
GABEL - Ki Mele’m (20th June 2020)
The background of the music video is filled with a light pink background as the video may have something to do with a wedding/marriage. From the beginning of the video there are groups of people and individuals who are all preparing for the big day, wearing white dresses, suits and bow ties! The song isn’t in English but I’m sure GABEL may be singing about love, and how important the big day is! The silver suit that he wears is such a beautiful fit, and it’s definitely something I could see myself wearing - but I’m sure it costs a fortune!
Denny Caknan - Los Dol (20th June 2020)
Another international song to add to the list by Denny Caknan! His YouTube channel has over 2 million subscribers but I have never heard of him before! The music has a lot of really cool shots, including those with bright flowers, close up shots of what it looks to be a couple speaking about Whatsapp data plans??? In the end you can see one of the lucky two guys who was trying to impress the lady, make her giggle, sending the other guy away (whether he had bought her the data plan or not). Either way, after having the auto translation on at the bottom of the screen, Denny was singing about how hard he had worked for the woman and it looked like the hard work paid off?
Julia Beautx - Glucklicher allein (20th June 2020)
From the beginning of the video, I could tell that the song wasn’t going to be in English. Julia is seen in her all white outfit with a white jacket, with still shots showing her getting ready in a bathroom. I believe this was a really interesting concept to add to the video as it splits up the music video. During the chorus it sounds like she’s screaming about ‘dollars’ without the d - but I’m sure that’s not the accurate translation. Either way, Julia looks great, her 2.1 million YouTube audience will probably love (and understand) the new song, and with her hair tied up in a ponytail she’s almost like an alternative version of Ariana Grande!
