LOCKDOWN LISTENING - Queen of the street Doja Cat, Nick Jonas the Spaceman and a Maroon 5 mistake...

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

I thought I would write a summary of some of the songs that have been released over the last few weeks! In today's blog post, the artists include Selena Gomez who seems to have started singing her newest songs in Spanish rather than English, a reality star who has won a talent show and now started releasing her own original music, a female rapper who rose to fame on TikTok and now dances naked in a shop window, and a Jonas brother who describes himself as a 'Spaceman' - which I would change to 'Sexy Spaceman'. Take a read down below of some of the last week's tracks!

DJ Snake & Selena Gomez 'Selfish Love' - (4th March 2021)

Selena Gomez seems to be singing a lot of Spanish songs recently, which could make me think that she might release an entire album of songs not in English, but anyways back to this song! The beginning of the music video seems to be set in a posh hairdressers, with a man that has incredibly long hair as the first client. Some of the lyrics sung by Selena include 'I know you're talking to someone else, baby it makes me want you more' which are phrases that suggest Selena is jealous of a man who already sems to be taken. Throughout the video there are a variety of talking mannequin heads and dancing body parts that come to life and have picture frame heads on legs. Selena goes on to sing lyrics including 'I like making you jealous', which could also indicate that she knows this man is happily taken, but she wants to see if he'll make a move, and she describes that they still got that 'selfish love' which could probably mean that they have a private part of their lives where they can love eachother effortlessly. At the end of the music video, one of the clients seems to have his hair cut, but also ends up on the floor, and the next customer, DJ Snake, comes in asking for a haircut, and Selena looks quite flirty and just seems more interested that her lover has turned up!

Megan Mckenna 'This' - (5th March 2021)

Since winning the celebrity version of The X Factor, Megan has released a variety of singing covers on her YouTube channel and has recently released a new original single called 'This'. The overall vibe of the music video seems to be quite emotional, and she's explained that where she is now, is where she feels happy. From start to finish, the environment seems to be quite dark and mysterious, almost looking like a mansion, and Megan can be seen wearing a black dress with a veil. Some of the opening lyrics indlude 'I don't fall into love, love falls into me' which almost suggests that she's never out looking for a relationship, but somehow she has people that are interested with her, or she accidentally finds herself in love. In the chorus she sings 'all I ever wanted is this, to take a shot and know I won't miss' which might explain that this is the first opportunity that she has decided to show her feelings and emotions towards somebody, hoping that she won't fall at the first hurdle. There are various other shots in the music video with Megan wearing a sparkly black top and lying down on the ground, and she sings other lyrics which include 'out of 100 no's, you only need 1 yes' which is relevant for almost anything you want to achieve in life, and she adds that she wants to 'find something I don't have to fix', which seems to relate to a relationship that won't break either end. It was a really nice music video and when I finished listening to all the lyrics, I thought that she had been a singer/songwriter for years, but I'm sure Megan can make the transition from reality television to singing, if she ever decided that she wanted to try something new!

Nathan Evanss (ft 220 KID & Billen Ted) 'Sea Shanty Remix' - (8th March 2021)

In this colourful music video, a song from the 19th century was re-imagined and modernised by a Scottish TikTok creator called Nathan Evans who had his single remixed by 220 KID and Billen Ted, sending the single to the top of the charts! According to the Scotsman, the song is one of few that has a 'positive outlook on how the hardship, isolation away from home and lack of necessities and luxuries will be worth it for the sailors'. One of the repeated lyrics includes 'soon may the Wellerman come, to bring us sugar and tea and rum' which could mean that this is the next delivery of drinks that they're going to receive. The following line reads 'one day, when the tonguin' is done' and I'm not too sure what that means...but if you want to listen to the remix of the viral song, the link will be below!

Doja Cat 'Streets' - (9th March 2021)

The next song that I reviewed was Doja Cat's new tune called 'Streets'. At the beginning of the video there is a TikTok trend included, where people's naked silhouettes are seen in the dark. I'm not currently using the app but I've seen some of these videos flying around the Internet. I think the main storyline behind this video is that there is a taxi driver who seems to be stuck in traffic, and imagines a woman dancing in a shop window. Some of Doja's first lyrics include 'I find it hard to find someone like you' which shows that this could potentially be a love song, or trying to have an individual as her own. In another scene she is seen lying on an orange car, wearing a full black outfit and high heels, with the taxi driver who suddenly gets lifted into the air and caught in a spider web. The scene transitions to Doja crawling like a spider, explaining to this individual that 'you give me energy', adding that 'you're one in a million, there ain't a man like you' which could both be reasons as to why she's captured him in her spider webt. She is probably trying to tease him, but also explain to him that she likes him, and she doesn't want other girls to have easy access to him. At the end of the video you can hear a girl saying 'hello, hello' which is Doja, who happens to be the backseat passenger in this taxi, and he had in fact been dreaming the entire time, with the mannequin appearing as a non-human once again.

Maroon 5 (ft Megan Thee Stallion) 'Beautiful Mistakes' - (11th March 2021)

This new collaboration between a boy band and a rapper was probably one of the most unexpecting collaborations of the year so far! Megan rose to fame through some of her songs going viral on the social media app TikTok, and since then she has been releasing a variety of huge hits with singers including DaBaby, Ty Dolla $ign and Cardi B! In this music video Adam Levine is initially seen speaking about being depressed as his lover isn't there with him, and we later see him driving a pink car down a highway with matching glasses. The environment seems quite artificial as everthing starts changing colours, and Adam subsequently ends up driving in the sky. He sings about making 'beautiful mistakes I make inside my head' including imagining somebody in his bed naked. Megan's short rapping verse explains that 'the only way I'm coming to you, is if you're dreaming' and admits that if they break up from being in a relationship, they're not going to stay friends. The final part of the video sees lots of coloured doughnuts being thrown around in the sky, but also creating a spiral path for both Adam and Megan to travel through on the final part of their journey!

Nick Jonas 'Spaceman' - (11th March 2021)

The next track is from Nick Jonas, whose music I have loved over the last years, but on his own and also alongside The Jonas Brothers. In this music video he describes himself as a spaceman, which could have connotations of experiencing something new or unique, or feeling like he has accomplished something. At the beginning of the video, we see Nick get thrown into space, after being shot into the sky with loud emergency alarms and a puff of smoke underneath his jetpack. The whole music video seems to be set up in space and some of Nick's opening lyrics include discussing that if people have problems, they should 'find somebody who can solve them'. He adds that the TV tells him what to do and maybe he should drink, because there's just so much bad news. He also speaks about the current times that we're in, explaining that as soon as he gets home, he takes off his mask, and knows that he's safe because he's away from the crowds. One of the interesting final shots in the music video is where Nick can be seen dancing and singing in a cave, with a blue reflection of a female who can be seen in the light. The video ends with a far away shot of Nick Jonas and his jetpack returning back to Earth after a few minutes away from the ordinary world! I think this was a really nice song, and his new album has been released, so expect an album review at some point in 2021...

Ali Gatie 'Can't Let You Go' (12th March 2021)

The final song on this list is by an Iraqi-Canadian singer songwriter called Ali Gatie. From the opening lyrics, this sounds like a breakup song, but also the realisation that Ali realised he could have left the relationship earlier than he did. The entire music video has been shot in black and white, and Ali can be seen with his hair plaitted and tied up. The background around him is white, with various shapes centred in the middle, at the beginning there can be a bright white circle seen and later on a group of squares overlapping one another makeup the background. Some of the lyrics that he sings include 'moving on means I should forget, and even if I could, I wouldn't' which are lyrics that explain how much love Ali had for this mysterious lover. I think that's the one thing about breakups, some people take it well, and for other, it just makes you miss that person even more. In the video there are a variety of shadows, transitions of shots and varied light and dark shots, with some dancers wearing black dresses and dancing around a little stage. Other lyrics sung by Ali include 'no matter what the price is, I would pay', adding that 'you knew I was weak' and that 'I knew you were lying but I had no courage to leave' which explain that he might not have been gullible in the relationship, but he definitely got taken advantage of, but he still doesn't want to get rid of the good memories. The fact he speaks about not having courage is something that a lot of men seem to struggle speaking about in a relationship, as they are supposed to be the strong ones, and also in control of where the relationship is going, even if they don't think it should go any further. At least now, Ali is able to reflect on something from the past, and he should be able to focus on his musical career, singing about the themes and topics passionate to him. I think I've heard his name before but I don't think I've ever listened to any of his music...until now in 2021!

I hope you enjoyed that little blog post of some of the songs that have been released over the last couple of weeks! There will be other songs, albums and music videos that will have individual blog post reactions and that's just because I want to vary up the posts and be versatile with every one that I do! Usually when I see a new music video out, I react straightaway...but if it takes me about 5 years to write a review, I usually have a little list, and then I just find it easier to summarise a group of music videos or songs and share them at the same time! I'll be back with some new reviews soon, but if there is any new music you've heard or seen recently, comment below and I'll have a listen to the song or a watch of the video! Stay safe all!
