Hey all!
The tracks that I have decided to write about are from the 30th June to 2nd July (and I decided to include an extra track from one of my favourite female singers who earned her platform from appearing on The Voice UK several years ago! In this list are some unknown singer/songwriters, along with those who have released more than a one hit wonder, but it's always interesting to see their names pop up again! Anyways, I hope you enjoy reading this weeks' 'songs of the last few days' - what a title!
Becky Hill & Sigala - Heaven On My Mind (25th June 2020)
After massive success from The Voice UK several years ago, Becky Hill has gone onto release some amazing tracks and collaborate with some amazing DJ’s and artists. On this dance track written with Sigala, she is seen in comfy clothes on a bed with a bright light, and then her transition from girl to angel. The middle of the video reminds me of a nightclub vibe with fast transitions, lots of spotlights and a variety of colour. It feels like I’m drunk and watching a video of how my night played out the day before! (But I haven’t drank alcohol since middle of March 2020 so I don’t really remember this feeling). The music video gives a slightly similar vibe to ‘Rain On Me’ released a few weeks ago by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, but I am honestly so proud of Becky and how far she has come on her musical journey. I’m sure she will continue going on to release some amazing tunes and maybe even release another album?!?!?
Burna Boy - Wonderful (30th June 2020)
The music video begins with ‘Somewhere in the land of the Kings and Queens’ followed by a shot of a monkey...Burna Boy is shown wearing an open pink shirt and singing what sounds like tribal callings. The music quickly transitions into him singing a church like song, accompanied by his tribal friends. The music video reminds me of a computer game I used to play called ‘Escape from Paradise’ - but the only difference is that I didn’t manage to escape the Island even to this day! During the music video there’s a lot of tribal dancing and chanting which are soothing to the ears, and also make you want to dance! And finally, the location in which the music video has been shot in seems like a really lovely place (filled with sunshine during the day, and campfires and songs through the night time).
FLOSS - Floss Like a Boss (30th June 2020)
As soon as I clicked ‘Play’ the music video started straightawa with NO messing round. In the first few seconds I realised that she is an alternative singer/songwriter with a quirky vibe. With her pink hair, party themed music and worldwide trend ‘flossing’ as her music video title, I knew I was in for a treat...wow don’t mind the pun! I love how the chorus of the music video showcases a variety of different shots, layouts and brings different individuals into the spotlight. At one point it looks like she’s got candles as a hairband? I’m not too sure...but it was definitely a ‘LOOK’. Also, I don’t know what ‘Floss like a boss’ means, but whatever you do, basically do it like a boss!
Alicia Keys - Perfect Way To Die (30th June 2020)
I haven’t heard a new Alicia Keys song in ages, so when I saw the notification, I was excited for the beginning of the new era. Also, for those who haven’t noticed, Alicia has also decided to go ‘makeup free’ to embrace her natural beauty instead of having people judge her by the way she looks. I’m not sure who the music video is about, but I believe it’s about some of the innocent individuals lost to the police killings in America (as several images appeared on the screen, including George Floyd). At the end of the music video, she walks away from her piano, the camera transitions into a birds eye view, and the names of those who have unfortunately been killed are written in capital letters on the pavement floor. It’s a very touching video, and will definitely help to shed light on this horrific moment in history - but should promote the importance of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement and that racism shouldn’t be occurring in 2020.
SHVVN - Bollymermaid (30th June 2020)
From listening to the first few seconds of the song, it sounds like an English adaption of a bollywood song (and I believe she sings something about garamasala which is an Indian spice??). The music video is set on a beach and on the top of a building, and the graphics bring the song to life. I’m in life with the simple black outfit showcasing Princess jasmine, along with the basic makeup look and face jewellery. Some of the lyrics are ‘Show me more than your ego, tell me more about your life goals’ - which I guess is a good conversation starter. It’s much better for people to tell you what their future goals are, than just showing off and acting like they’re the best person to be around. I felt that completely, and I am always working on personal goals that I want to achieve in the future!
G-Eazy - Back To What You Knew (1st July 2020)
Right at the beginning of the month, G-Eazy released a new song called ‘Back To What You Knew’. I believe this music video was a continuation of his song ‘Had Enough’ which featured the same woman! The shots in this video were really cool, especially with some of the shots repeating and the close up shots shown next to the side of the bed. I think the funniest part of the video is that the female who is in the music video was getting up all close with the singer - and she may even have a boyfriend...I think this would be a really cool job...to be an extra/actor in a music video! G-Eazy looks really attractive in the video as well, and towards the end of the video you can see him fall back onto the pillow, almost trying to remember the amazing memories shared with! It’s sad but I’m sure he’ll be able to move on!
Maisie Peters - Sad Girl Summer (1st July 2020)
I believe the music video for this song was shot during isolation, and it’s interesting how Maisie has managed to get some of her friends included in the song. By using different transitions, outfits and the same background, the video has been edited really well together! I feel like the song is about a summer that is just going to result in another girl beind sad, and instead of being with a boyfriend, she’ll be spending most of her time with her lady friends to get over the situation. The vibe of the video is quite comedic, and although the lyrics of the song speak about something negative that’s happened, it’s going to be resolved by something positive! I’m not sure if I have heard any of Maisie’s songs before, but she’s definitely a really good songwriter and somebody to keep an eye out for in the coming months and years!
Sofia Carson & R3HAB - Miss U More Than U Know (1st July 2020)
This song is ANOTHER video filled with lyrics about love...and by the title Sofia isn’t just in love, she misses spending time with a mystery lover. Most of the shots and transitions in the video convey the theme of ‘vintage’ and include a lot of black and white shots - similar to that of Lana Del Ray/Camilla Cabello and Ariana Grande mixed? One of the best parts of the video is where there are overlaying images and videos using the projector, experimenting with colours, shapes and pre filmed content (with what seems to be a fan in her face). Overall, I love the colours, and the simplicity of the video instead of a massive production and 100’s of background dancers...simple usually means you can focus on the aspects a lot better than if there were a lot of things going on at the same time.
Ramz - Scratch Cards (2nd July 2020)
Another interesting track from Ramz. Firstly it looks like most of the people in the music video are wearing face masks or staying 2m away from eachother...which is good? Anyways, onto the song. I believe the song is about how he has grown up over the last years, and he used to always go to Church on a Sunday, he’s a nice lad - but people shouldn’t take advantage of that, and if any fights or arguments were to start, that he would be there in a ‘jiffy’. One of the best aspects of this music video was the added shots of flowers and nature, as it was a good transition from the rapping in one verse through the chorus and into the next.
Darkoo - Kryptonite ‘Tough Times Never Last’ (2nd July 2020)
The final song to add onto this list is called Kryptonite by rap artist Darkoo, who I’ve not heard of before! The majority of the music video looks as if it is set as a house party with her friends. The official song is very relaxing and sounds like the type of song you would hear at a nightclub and the colour scheme of the house that the music video has been filmed in looks SO clean! I don't really have much else to add onto this little review, but it's definitely another head bopping song, so take a listen if you fancy listening to a new song!
