Hey all!
For this weeks 'songs of the week' between 8th July and 10th July, there is another large mix of music. It includes a track from Miley Cyrus' younger sister Noah Cyrus, American heartthrob Charlie Puth, London based singer/songwriter Dua Lipa and Germany's own LGBTQ+ singer Kim Petras with her new collaboration with Kyo on their track 'Broken Glass'
Diplo & Noah Cyrus - On Mine (8th July 2020)
In this music video Noah Cyrus is seen on a farm wearing both a white dress (which matches the horse) and a red dress which looks STUNNING! In this song she is singing about somebody having their skin on her, as ‘she doesn’t think she can walk the world alone’. At the beginning and the end of the video, you can see the reflection of the horse in Noah’s eye, before her eyes closing and the video coming to a close. As the younger sister of Miley Cyrus, I’m sure there is some female competition in her family to be successful and even make good music, as Noah was only introduced to us a few years ago, but it’s almost like she’s her own person...because she’s got a different singing tone, she looks different and the only thing they seem to have in common is their parents and their surnames. I’ll just add that the farmer in the music video is like a silver fox, minus the silver hair...but yeah he’s fit! (8/10)
Sammie - Peace (9th July 2020)
The title of this song is called ‘Peace’ so I assumed the song would also be peaceful. The lyrics at the beginning of the music video say that he just wants to find love, someone to cook with, chill in hot tubs with and isn’t in need of a complicated life! Communication, Love and Patience are three elements that he says are important for his relationship to be successful, and I agree with those. A relationship wouldn’t work if people didn’t talk, it would be a ‘friendship’ if there was no love, and your lover probably won’t be around you 24/7 so it’s a matter of being patient and cherishing the hours you have with them. In the video, Sammie is wearing a shirt, dungaree straps and is seen with his special lady (along with his brothers, sisters, mum, dad and everyone else in his family). I think the simple message from the video and lyrics is that a simple life is sometimes better than a complicated life and everybody deserves a little bit of love and respect! It ALMOST brought a tear to my eye, but it didn’t! (8/10)
Charlie Puth - Girlfriend (9th July 2020)
In this music video we see Charlie taking on the role as a chef, creating these elegant meals to try and impress his ‘almost girlfriend’ on date night. In the video you see his excitement as he tries to do almost anything to make the time go faster...he gets out his roller skates among other kitchen items, along with a hoover, a bowl of cereal and he just cannot contain his emotions. Towards the end of the video after his dancing and jumping around, he is unable to hear the girl ringing the doorbell and she instead sees the reason why...you see him turn around whilst he sings the last line ‘Do you want to be my girlfriend’ and has a cheeky smile on his face when he realises she’s been watching! It’s a great track from a great artist and even lockdown hasn’t put Charlie in a sad mood...although, how would date night work at a 2m distance?, especially if there’s drinks involved… (9.5/10)
James Bay - Chew On My Heart (9th July 2020)
I don’t think I’ve heard a new James Bay song since ‘Let It Go’ (not the song from Frozen); and both of those songs came out ages ago anyways, so yeah, it’s good that James is back with new music! His latest song is called ‘Chew On My Heart’ and he is seen wearing a cream coloured shirt with a white t-shirt underneath and a pair of jeans. It sounds like I’m describing an outfit at a fashion show, but it’s most certainly only for a music video! He also looks REALLY hot with his new long brown locks. Throughout the video there are a lot of rainbow coloured streaks that appear on the screen and they look really cool, especially merged with the natural sunlight in the video as well. This song is about somebody potentially ‘chewing’ on James’ heart - not literally, but somebody that he can see himself with in the near future. Will 2020 be the year that James Bay finally finds a ‘bae’? Wow, that was unintentional but yeah let’s see! (9/10)
Dua Lipa - Hallucinate (10th July 2020)
Having released her latest album Hallucinate, it was about time that the main single from the album had its own music video! It’s a shame that the video is only an animation, but even Dua Lipa said on Twitter that everybody’s in lockdown and this was the best attempt she could do for getting a video - but better is still to come! I actually think the animation has been put together and helps bring the song to life (Imagine if she was able to recreate it in real life once lockdown is over?). Also, I’m not sure if anybody else noticed, but there were two emojis that were shown dancing with each other…(an aubergine and a peach?) - I’m leaving THAT comment to your imagination! The song has now become one of my favourites from the album, but when it was first released as the lead single I had a very different opinion of the song saying that the chorus was ‘too simple’ and that the added effects to the song before the chorus are ‘slightly weird’. Apparently the song was only a 5.5/10 but now it’s at least an 8/10 (especially after seeing that really appealing animation!) (8/10)
Kygo & Kim Petras - Broken Glass (10th July 2020)
The music video to this song accompanies a track from Kygo’s album ‘Golden Hour’. The music video has quite a lot of dark shots and sees Kim Petras in a variety of enclosed spaces (which I would find slightly scary because I’m not a fan of being in small spaces!). At the start of the video you see Kim stuck in a car that has been overturned and throughout the video she tries to bring it back to the other side. Also, in the video it looks like it’s snowing? But in July that must be impossible? I believe the music video is about a previous lover and maybe ‘dancing on the broken glass’ is maybe signifying that you’re dancing around the pain of not being in a relationship anymore, but actually...if you take a few paces away from the glass you can move on with your life (which is what she’s doing!). She also admits to the only thing she had in common with her ex lover is that everything they touch gets destroyed, so maybe having been with each other, it ruined both of their chances of finding love again? Anyways, the video was pretty cool, also reminded me a little bit of Narnia, it has a similar visual style to that of Ava Max and also looked like a potentially scene out of a film! (8.5/10)
Zara Larsson - Love Me Land (10th July 2020)
Another music video that was released on 10th July was ‘Love Me Land’ the new single by Swedish singer/songwriter Zara Larsson. The video is a collection of different dance moves and transitions to accompany the love song dedicated to someone special! In the music video there is a variety of different lighting used with the scene going darker and lighter at different points, but in her silver top and ‘shorts’ - she stands out like a shiny gem! It’s actually amazing to see how she has evolved over the years from her years of being a featured artist, then moving into her ‘Lush Life’ era, and now into 2020 where she is probably going to be releasing another album at some point! I personally don’t think it’s her BEST song but it’s probably just an introduction for what we are going to expect from the new album but what do you guys think? (7/10)
RAYE - Natalie Don’t (10th July 2020)
In this video, RAYE seems to be playing multiple characters but instead of the song being above love or a potential love partner, the video seems to give simple tips for how to self love and self care to protect yourself from being disappointed. Some of the suggestions include listening to your head not your heart, get out of bed, don’t overdo TikTok and most certainly don’t drink and dial (as when you ring anybody when you’re drunk, you’ll often forget what you’ve said!). I love her new short hairstyle as well as the various outfits featured in the music video - with my favourite one being the red and white square dress (which matches the red walls that are seen in the background)!! (8/10)
(My post was also featured on the Nottingham Trent University's student magazine blog called Platform Magazine and the link will be below, but it's the same as this)...
