LOCKDOWN LISTENING - International female artists BLACKPINK & Halsey, rapper Meekz and more!

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all!

So I've got another bundle of bops for you to check out this week! The songs were released between 26th and 29th June, but don't worry, there's more reviews to come! In this weeks round up there are tracks from female artists BLACKPINK, one of the biggest Kpop bands at the moment, international superstar Halsey, YouTube found sensation Hobbie Stuart nd an unknown singer/songwriter by the name of Anya Louise!

Here's a few of my brief thoughts about the music video and the song, I hope you enjoy reading!

Delilah Montagu - Version of Me (26th June 2020)

At the beginning of this music video, I can tell that most of the video has been shot by using a filter/green screen or the photo booth available on a Mac - which is a really interesting way to put together a music video! Her voice is really soft and quite soothing at the same time. She’s singing about how she’s not being herself, and indeed is showcasing a ‘made up’ version of herself. I’m not sure if this is in relation to lockdown or just as a person develops, they begin to learn more about themselves and not know what parts of them are truthful or a lie...as people should (and try) to only show themselves in their best lights!

Meekz - Like Me (26th June 2020)

All of the people featured in this music video have all had their identities hidden; (which is an interesting way to promote a new single). I also find it very funny how there’s a young child who’s been included in the video...but he/she looks really upset to be there...idk maybe there’s too many cameras! I believe the video is all about explaining how he is different to other people in the rapping game and always speaks the truth. Although I don’t understand what the song is about or what the aim was behind the music video, I do love the visuals and how well the video was edited together. At the end of the video, Meekz promotes another one of his songs called ‘Can’t stop won’t stop’ - which was a single released one month earlier back in May 2020!

BLACKPINK - How You Like That (26th June 2020)

I was introduced to BLACKPINK in my 1st year of studying at University when my friend was playing one of their songs and I just happened to like it. I believe that was my slow journey into appreciating KPOP music. Their new single ‘How You Like That’ has over 200 million views. Each of the four girls has their own individual moments in the music, showing thei different styles and personalities. My favourite scene in the music video was when they are all wearing white, and almost seem like they’re in a snow room (Christmas come early??). The song has a clear message that whoever maybe wasn’t a fan of them, should have tried to end them before they become more successful or had a higher level of confidence!

Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind (27th June 2020)

Once I saw another Marshmello collaboration, I thought I would watch the music video, and the song is with Halsey - who is a female singer/songwriter I LOVE the music of. The music video is a dance collaboration where Halsey is seen in a variety of different scenes with matching outfits. Each of the new environments looked like something out of a film or a game (and sort of looks like the unused visuals for LazyTown!!). I think the song is about being positive and being kind to and crying on the ones that you love as they are supposed to be there to support you. From watching the whole of the video, it seems as if Halsey got dragged into a ‘game mode’ and at the end of the video, that’s when she is able to notice Marshmello, who STILL hasn’t revealed his identity!

Anya Louisa - Midnight Musings (27th June 2020)

This music video is 5 minutes long and it’s almost like a short film with silence for the first minute. Anya is seen in multiple locations with dark clothes and dark makeup to accompany to her look, with very still shots (instead of pans or transitions). Throughout the video there are similarities between her and Taylor Swift, with her voice sounding like Lorde (known for her most popular song ‘Royals’). I believe the song is aimed at one of her ex partners who she says would be better with somebody else, rather than with her...She may have written this song after the lover wasnn’t in a happy relationship with Anya and felt ‘trapped’ - and now they can be free and she wouldn’t care. One of my favourite shots in the video is where she is seen to be on the corner of a bed with a variety of candles lighting up the scene. She’s currently an unknown singer/songwriter but i’m sure she’ll go on to release a lot more singles, especially after having already released one song already called ‘Fight the Fire’ back in May.

Hobbie Stuart - Having My Child (28th June 2020)

I decided to watch and write about this song because I have been following Hobbie’s journey since near the very beginning. I was lucky enough to meet him in Covent Garden, London, where he performed alongside Bethan Leadley (a.k.a Leadley) and he is honestly one of the nicest guys I have ever met. I felt really bad for him at one point as one of his ex girlfriends pretended that she was pregnant with his child...and this seemed to be untrue. The video was shot in London (as seen with all of the underground signs in the background). In the video, Hobbie is seen in either a yellow t shirt (or no t shirt...how lucky are we?!?!?). In the chorus he sings that there is no love for ‘you’ (which I presume in the girl that treated him wrong). With his beautiful voice and the colourful locations in London, the whole package of song and video work really well together, an I am very excited to see what new music he will be bringing out soon!

Thomas Headon - Loving You (28th June 2020)

When this music video started, I thought this was a Harry Styles lookalike...Either way, Thomas’ style is really cool and the whole aesthetic of the music video is really cool (including the pink background, bright colours and his jiggly legs...I think he just got excited. With Sia on the drum kit, the song is really well put together with a clean understanding that Thomas is speaking about somebody who is easy to love because they’re nice, and wonders if they like him too! With a 17k audience on his YouTube channel, I’m sure some of the viewers feel the same way about someone or have someone feel the same towards them? - Love is great, but usually only when it goes right and you find that ‘perfect’ person.

Maggie Szabo - I Don’t Need You (29th June 2020)

Just from the title of this music video, I’m guessing Maggie is singing about a boy called ‘Michael’ who wasted her time. Whilst in her wedding dress she admits that she was drawn in by his light blue eyes...but then you see her outside cutting up the wedding dress, so that ‘love’ didn’t last long. The worst part is that ‘Michael’ dumped her by text. In the middle of the music video Maggie burns the pictures of the two of them, the cake and anything else that would remind her of the boy (who’s actually pretty sexy to be honest)...but that’s just my opinion. At the end of the video there’s a shot of a pink telephone with an audio clip saying ‘Sorry, the person you are trying to reach has moved on!’. Great way to end the music video, and an even greater way to round up the songs for this blog post!
