LOCKDOWN LISTENING - 7th to 9th July 2020 includes songs from LANY, Sam Fischer, The 1975 & Faouzia!

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all!

Today's blog post summarises about 10 songs which had their music videos released between the 7th and 9th July. The artists included boy bands The 1975 and LANY, international female singer/songwriters Kiana Lede, Faouzia and Kehlani, and even a spontaneous lockdown collaboration between Sam Fischer and Anne Marie (Can I, Can I get your number to-NIGHT UH UH)...sorry, the song was in my head so I had to quote it! Okay, I hope you enjoy this list of songs and I'll see you very soon with some more blog posts, YouTube videos which I've managed to transform into written posts (as the YouTube/TikTok scene just isn't for me anymore); and potentially some teasers of projects I'm working on over the next few years!

LANY - If this is the last time (7th July 2020)

This music video is an emotional tribute to parents, saying that if it’s the last time that they will be able to meet, then they want to get close and enjoy the final moments together. I’m sure the song is related to the whole coronavirus situation at the moment as people are dying every single day and it could be anybody’s guess who will be next. LANY are an alternative rock band whose music I have heard before, but just didn’t realise was them. The music video was shot in all black and white, and was filmed in a small room. The lyrics of the song were very simple to understand and the visuals go really well with the singing. Also, one of my favourite shots from this music video was where you can see the large group of people sitting and standing next to the box (as I believe this could be all of their parents sitting next to them). The natural lighting helps to give them a nice glare on their face without being too forced or too powerful.

Kiana Lede - Crazy (7th July 2020)

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the song ‘Shower’ by Becky G? Well, this video was LITERALLY filmed while Kiana was in the shower. In the video she admits to having a ‘side of crazy’ which one of her ex lovers claims to have seen, well, apparently not. In the video there are transitioning shots of Kiana on a dark blue background (as well as her shower shots) and the song is very slow. Basically, I’m sure this will be one of those short introduction songs which could be the first single of her new album? We’ll have to see! Anyways, this was a really cute song and it’s just made me think how crazy is her crazy side?

Kizz Daniel - Ada (7th July 2020)

From the beginning of the video I knew that this would be a really happy and upbeat song, from the interesting colours and outfits seen in the first 0.1 seconds! It looks like the music video has been filmed on a variety of different green screens with friends, family (or just actors and actresses who wanted to get involved in a fun shoot). This video has all different backgrounds and styles that it’s difficult to pinpoint my favourites! Some of the backgrounds include cocoa, an aeroplane, the Eiffel tower in Paris and even a woman twerking on a bus? During lockdown a lot of singers and songwriters have found alternative ways to transform their songs into music videos, and this was certainly one of the most brave (and successful) of the lost. Again, the song is very short, BUT it still managed to make me smile (even though I didn’t understand all of the lyrics, once again!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u8AHJ2Cksg

Omah Lay - Lo Lo (7th July 2020)

From the beginning of this music video, I find it difficult to understand what ‘Lo Lo’ is, but Omah admits that he looks good, but he’s not that good...and he wants to prove to people whether he can get somebody in his room. When I was a University student I believe that was one of my aims to be honest...I would be able to talk to people and potentially flirt with them, but inviting them back to my room was SUCH a difficult task especially when everyone was just drunk and didn’t know what they were doing. Okay, back to the music video! The colours were gorgeous, and I found it interesting throughout the chorus when Omah would say certain words and the background singers would repeat those words, whilst also showing them in their colourful outfits and makeup for those few seconds! Overall it was a very fun and uplifting music video with lots of colour, fun and performance - and my favourite scene was when Omah was dancing in between all of the Taxi’s on a table of some sort...

Sam Fischer - This City Remix (7th July 2020) ft Anne Marie

When I saw ‘Remix featuring Anne Marie’ I thought that I had to listen to the song. I’m assuming Sam previously released a single called This City and asked Anne Marie to sing a verse...well, she said yes! As the music video had to be filmed remotely, the majority of the music video has been filmed using the street views that have billboards, but instead of boring advertisements, Sam and ANne Marie’s visuals are featured on the screen! It’s most certainly an alternative way to shoot a music video, especially if it’s the only way to do it safely! It was also very interesting to see Anne Marie with ANOTHER colour of hair, as the last time I saw her in London, she was blonde, and now she’s got bright pink hair!

Zinoleesky - MaPariwo (7th July 2020)

From the description of this music video, the song is about love that is supposed to stay secret...some of the music video has been shot by the blinds (where I have previously done a photoshoot and thought that it was the same window lol). Zinoleesky’s brightly coloured pink hair helps him to stand out from some of the other people included in his music video (even though some of the girls are seen in bikinis...I am focused more on the singer). During the middle to end of the music video, there is a short scene featured outside Maruans Lodge which is primarily pink in colour and helps the artist to stand out even more! This could have been the ideal location to take a few pictures and use it as the cover art to the song, but I’m not sure there is cover art! It’s another one of those songs where it’s difficult to understand the lyrics, but the nature of the song and the visuals help it to be sold in a better light!

Ashley Singh - 17 (8th July 2020)

Okay here’s another unknown singer/songwriter called Ashley Singh. I actually stumbled across his profile on Instagram after seeing his sponsored post revealing that he was releasing some new music. The video seems like it was shot at home with a lot of the shots of him while in the studio bringing the aspects of the song together. I also like the aesthetic of the music video, as it seems like there’s a sort of filter or ‘vintage look’ to the video. I believe this song is also about losing somebody...Ashley seems to be really sad about letting his ex lover down and would ‘give his eyes’ to try again - SEE, love is more than just looks, so he would rather be blind to enjoy this person’s personality! His outfit in the music video was a simple t-shirt and trousers, with his guitar (and a very cute smile)...Also I love the earring he has in and it really suits him. Okay this isn’t Tinder, just go and listen to the song!

The 1975 - Yeah I Know (8th July 2020)

Another boyband song...but without the boys? Instead the music video has been filled with a robot in a white dress. It seems like the robot is working on another project, but even she looks confused (and she’s been programmed to do something). The actual song doesn’t have that many words, and with the title of the song called ‘Yeah I Know’, I’m not sure what they are referring to, but either way it’s an interesting visual. About ¾ of the way through the music video, the robot (who looks similar to Sophia the Robot) has been able to make mechanical arms, similar to those of Edward Scissorhands! After reading the description of the music video, it seems that there is a correlation between the robot and consciousness and somehow she is able to communicate through her AI language with Matt Healy, the main singer of the band! I’m not into any of this robot stuff, but the video was interesting!

WurlD - WAYO ‘Kpe Le Wu’ (8th July 2020)

This afro-soul song was released on 8th July but it would at least get a 9/10 on my rating scale. After seeing the music video shared on my Twitter timeline, I thought I would give it the respect by watching it and writing about it! There are a lot of trumpets in the song which help give the song more of a theatrical vibe! The colourful backgrounds and matching outfits help to add to the performance within the music video - especially with the three ladies who look almost identical and dance in their short blue dresses! I’ll presume this is another love song, but instead of their love just being about the physical aspects, he says it makes him dangerous? I’m not really sure...I turned up my volume but I still couldn’t catch that line!

Faouzia - How It All Works Out (9th July 2020)

I believe I’ve heard some of Faouzia’s songs before and have previously reacted to some of them on my second channel. During this music video you can see that she’s putting on a nice outfit and making sure her makeup is applied well, as she is about to try and impress somebody? - It looks like she’s in the car with either her sister or probably a best friend of hers, and during the middle of the video you see that girl disappear and obviously that’s how it all works out apparently? It’s a quite moving storyline as you eventually see Faouzia

Kehlani - Bad News (9th July 2020)

This is another music video shot in 95% black and white with a few colourful shots. She is wearing a wedding dress with a bride’s veil surrounded by what seems to be lots and lots of newspapers. The lyrics in the video seem like she’s talking to a lover, asking them if they want to give up their life to have their name with her’s - and that she knows about most of his life by reading and understanding the tattoos. Hmm, this music video was a little tricky to understand the meaning for, but I got that it’s about love, it could be moving from the single to married life and whether this particular lover would be interested in moving into this new way of life!
