Lana Condor 'For Real' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all,

For today's music video review, I'll be taking a look at a video that came up in my 'suggested'. It's a music video by Lana Condor and the title is called 'For Real'. I did have a little look at her YouTube channel and realised that she's only been posting for about a year (when this blog post goes out), and that she also has a boyfriend...so I'm guessing this song could be about him? Without any further delay, here we go!

The first thing I must say is that Lana is a very attractive young lady, with nice natural dark hair and such clear skin. To begin the music video there was a short segment of triptych shots lined next to eachother which was almost like a social media collage in a video format. I like how the overall feel of the music video is shot from home, and most of it could probably be self shot. Some of the opening lyrics are 'I learn not to need you each time I leave town' which could suggest that Lana is maybe having to travel a lot, either for work, to see people or to get involved with new business opportunities, and she explains that she doesn't always need the presence of this person there. It might seen that people have criticised her for always being around her boyfriend - as that's the most obvious connection that this song can be about, and she is basically explaining how she is an independant woman, and she's able to do things by herself!

Other shots that are included in this music video are the fast paced shots of various daily activites such as reading a magazine, washing hair and sitting down looking out of the window. She sings the lyrics 'the futher I get, the stronger I feel' which could almost be relating back to the distance situation...and the further she has to travel, the more strength she gains at being able to cope by herself, and she finishes the line by singing 'that's how I know I love you for real'. A lot of people that in relationships will either stress about having to be away from their lover for so long, or actually it gives them enough time for themselves as they know they will be able to come back to their lovers at any time! It's a good line to include in the song, as some people in relationships think that you have to be with eachother every second of the day, and others feel that alone time is just 'boring' - but self care and self love is definitely needed, even in a relationship.

Further into the music video there are quite funny shots of her walking and dancing around her apartment, drinking wine, eating pizza and being 'strange' - it's probably the sort of thing that I would do if I was by myself in a flat or apartment, so no judgement here! She also sings the line 'you know I'd hate to give you up' which must show that she is definitely not going to be leaving this relationship anytime soon, as they may have treated her so nicely, that she couldn't think of anything worse to do...and 'giving somebody up' could also identify that there wouldn't even be a suitable replacement! I like the natural sunlight and shadows throughout the entire music video, and although it's all been shot at home, it still looks really professionally edited and put together - and the smile on Lana's face also makes the music video more thrilling to watch, because she's smiling, looks happy, and although we're in a pandemic she's still able to focus on the positives. The final line she sings is 'I always come home and this hurt always heals' which is the final thought of, it doesn't matter how far you go away from somebody that you love or care about, when you're back together again, you can relax and know that you're in safe hands, which is a great message to end on!
