Hey all!
Let's hope there's some songs on this album that you 'can't get out of you head'. I love a little musical joke once in a blue moon. Anyways, Kylie Minogue has released her 2020 deluxe album called 'DISCO' which probably gives off 'clubbing vibes' and that feeling of being at a disco party. With 16 new tracks swirling around the charts, what better way to stay trendy and relevant, than to review the songs...one by one!
Disc 1:
1 - 'Magic'
The first song on the album seems like a soon to be 'classic dance song' asking the simple question of whether we believe in magic - 'Do you believe in magic?'. I think that there are a lot of people who think magic is a little skeptical, but the idea of magic could be related to being in love or a form of relationship; having that 'magic connection'. Some of her other lyrics speak about making the night last forever and trying not to think about tomorrow, which is a good way to think about life. Lots of people think too far into the future, that they are unable to cherish the current time period they are in! It's all about appreciating the small things in life and expecting the unexpected!
2 - 'Miss a Thing'
'Get that body on the dance floor and make me want more' are some of the first lyrics in this very fast paced song, but again, it's another one of those classic dance inspired tracks! She speaks about not wanting to miss a thing or waste time, but instead being someone's special girl! The chorus of the song is actualy quite catchy with a melodic rhythm of lyrics that make you feel as if you're in some sort of dream including 'Run away run away run away with me'!
3 - 'Real Groove'
At the beginning of this song, Kylie's independent vocals were heard before some background sounds and instruments! It's quite a 'bouncy' song that you can bop your head to, and speaks about wanting her heart to go on a ride; 'bump in the night'. The song is about her noticing a guy she loves, dancing with another girl, admitting that the other girl might have the 'perfect body' but 'she doesn't have the moves'!
4 - 'Monday Blues'
A short guitar solo started thing song and then it transformed into a holiday song you're likely to hear in a foreign country; not in the UK. I believe this song is speaking out having fun on the weekend, as she whittles through Monday to Friday before singing 'It's the weekend!'...and she goes on to say that this helps her get through the Monday Blues (The title of the song, duh?). It's another of those party songs but also quite relatable as a lot of people don't like Mondays due to it being the first day of a working week!
5 - 'Supernova'
Without researching, I know a supernova has some relation to a star or something in the galaxy, so that's how I'm going to analyse this song's lyrics! The song is probably describing one of her lovers as something 'out of this world', asking to go into someone's special spaceship and then be rescued by a rocket? The lyrics 'I just need some of your starlight' probably speak about a piece of this individual's love...or positivity, or brightness; as stars are quite bright! Yeah, it's a song with a complicated meaning as I don't know much about the world, Earth, Sciene or stars, but yeah...not a standard love song!
6 - 'Say Something'
From the opening lyrics of the song, she states the fact that she is a million miles away from somebody in so many different ways, but describes somebody being able to 'light up a dark room'. I think in this song, she's asking for somebody's opinion on their current love situation, admitting that she wants them to 'all be as one again'; whether this is speaking about the lucky lover and his/her family, or just bringing people together during this difficult time! She also describe 'Love as being love forever' which is a very strong opinion to state, but I guess it's true...we might not always show we love somebody, but there is love there somewhere!
7 - 'Last Chance'
'This is the last chance for the first dance' - Oh, naughty! This must be a tease song for somebody that cannot keep their eyes off Kylie! She might have given this particular guy multiple opportunities to 'be her baby' and it's now upto him whether he wants to accept the offer! For some reason, the song gives me Christmas vibes, so there could be some wintery romance for Kylie soon? Or it's just a coincidence that this song is being released before the big day! I wish I could be in a position like this, where you know for certain there are people that want to be with you, and you're able to tease them into accepting your offer to have a dance or trial a relationship...but at the moment I'm just super lonely and can only dream about this for the future!
8 - 'I Love It'
In this song Kylie speaks about loving something, so I'm just waiting for those key words! I think she loves the fact that somebody loves her and she is able to give that love back! 'After that first kiss, I knew I'd never be the same' are the words that start the second verse of the song, so she might have realised that this lucky person was more than just a friendship thing...and the kiss of approval, sealed that! She goes on to say that they should just let the music play and they should take 'all the way' - no explanation needed for what that means, but yeah, it's a natural thing to talk about! I love the trombone backing instruments throughout different parts of the song and the overall tune of the tune is quite sophisticated, but also gives me slight salsa vibes?!? Or is that just me hungry for Doritos and salsa, I don't know...
9 - 'Where Does the DJ Go?'
In the song, Kylie speaks about how she's usually working very hard everyday and then it's time to go to the party; but questions where the DJ goes when the party is over? Well, I would guess they would either go home, or join some afterparty somewhere, especially if they're offered free drinks for their services! Also, there are still things called 'after parties' where the drunk people become their own DJ's and can continue vibing away...but without the official DJ! She speaks in the song that she doesn't 'dress up for nothing' but wants to party from night into the next morning, but it's fine because if it's a Friday night, you can just wear the same outfit the day after! Problem sorted Kylie, but this is definitely a question that people probably do question...Where DOES the DJ go?
10 - 'Dance Floor Darling'
I feel like this song is almost the reunion after a school prom...once you're 18 and begin enjoying your first proper night out at a club, asking for somebody to be your dance floor darling! If you had to think about if you have any of your own dance floor darlings, who would you choose? For me, I know there's a few people I definitely would NOT dance with, but that's for a different story. Kylie however sings in this song that she's going to take someone where the 'music never ends' - so the after party I mentioned in the above song would be the perfect place then? Or a house party where the DJ stays as long as the people are dancing and drinking for...before passing out, getting bored, vomiting or falling asleep!
11 - 'Unstoppable'
This isn't a collaboration of Kylie and Sia, but the song happens to have the same name! It would be a great duet though, don't you think? Or am I just shipping to many duets on my music reviews...This song seems to have a similar meaning to some of the others on the album describing love as 'unstoppable', admitting that is never ends. 'If only we could open our hearts and reach out a hand' - a weird thing to try and imagine, but it's definitely a way to confirm your love for somebody, as you can hold hands and hearts at the same time. I think the hidden meaning behind this song is that love is going to find you , somewhere somehow, and when it does you won't be able to push it away! That's always great to know, because I'm trying to use my magical powers to draw in a lover, so it's like me and the unstoppable love are working together!
12 - 'Celebrate You'
The final song on the first disc is called 'Celebrate You' but you knew that as it's literally written above. The opening lyrics of the song are dedicated to a 'Mary' - which could either be a specific person that Kylie knows, or a song aimed at many Mary's; other women, and making sure that they celebrate themselves and their own achievements and accomplishments! I feel like this could be a female empowerment song where she is celebrating all the great things that people are achieving, 'screaming it to the world'!
Disc 2:
13 - 'Till You Love Somebody'
Another song that didn't initially start with lyrics, but instead a drum solo! (Which was pretty sick not going to lie). In this song the lyrics before the chorus are 'You don't know, 'til you love somebody', so that could either mean you're unsure if you love somebody until you dance with them (because she mentions dancing a lot); or you don't know if love is possible, until it happens to you? It's a great thing to think about just in terms of life, even if it's not related to love...You don't know about something until you do it, and you don't believe in something until you give it a go! She speaks about 'all the colours of the rainbow' in this song, which could signify that once you do find love, there is so much of a connection, that even the rainbows come out in the sky!
14 - 'Fine Wine'
In the beginning of the song she mentions that somebody could 'jump in her ride (beep beep)' and they'll have a good time! She goes on to say that there's fine wine available if they like the finer things in life. She's goes on to sing about ballons which could signify there is some form of birthday of celebration happening, admitting that it's 'on her' (because she's able to pay for it!). It's probably a song that signifies enjoyment, with alcohol and a lot of dancing!
15 - 'Hey Lonely'
Hi Kylie! Oh wait, I'm not sure this song was directly intended for me...In the song she asks what 'lonely' is doing for the rest of their life or the night, stating that she wants to give some of her love and attention. Maybe this is because she is no longer lonely, and wants to be kind to everyone! (Not sure 'lonely' is an actual person, but it's a figure of speech to probably say she's not lonely anymore, but she doesn't forget about when that was how she felt). 'Wanna give you all of that devotion and emotion' were some of those lyrics used, and I can imagine a music video where there's a person with the word lonely attached to their body...but I don't think Kylie's management would ever speak to ME about a music video idea. One can only dream.
16 - 'Spotlight'
The final single on the album (Disc 2, just to let you know) is called 'Spotlight' but again I'm sure you could have read that for yourself. Being in the spotlight is a good and bad thing, so it will be interesting to see what angle she comes from when singing this song! 'Can't stop it when it feels so right' are some of the lyrics from the chorus, which speak about forming a loving relationship again, and I believe some of the lyrics speak about somebody having their time in the spotlight..by being in love with her, therefore being known for a short while! Again, the song gives me the idea that there is a lot of dancing happening in this song or some form of dance competition where people might have to fight for the spotlight?!? It's another song you can definitely dance to, and is definitely relatable to a lot of people, whether they're in the spotlight 24/7 or they get 5 very incredible minutes of fame!
Right, I'm off to party (virtually obviously), so I'll be back with some new music reviews soon! Until there, bye!
