Hey everyone,
In this blog post I am going to be reviewing a new song by KAMILLE, called 'Mirror Mirror'. I discovered her as she appeared on a Little Mix track titled 'More Than Words'. Here is my review!
At the beginning of the music video it was clear to see that the format was going to be similar to that of a Disney Princess, with a magical castle, purple lights and a statue outside of the house almost guiding the viewer into the magical mansion. KAMILLE could be seen wearing a long dress with brown hair and highlights, holding and dancing with a handkerchief along with the rest of the dancers. To the side, you could see step sisters holding an apple each, one with a green dress and wig and the other with a pink dress and wig. One of the opening lyrics included 'you're blowing up my line but I let it ring ring' which almost signifies that she has been receiving calls from the same person multiple times, but is too busy. Her other lyrics include that she's travelling the world, which could be speaking about her musical career and that she is able to tour with different artists or headline her own concerts.
During the middle of the video we are introduced to various other characters including 'Jade' who is infact Jade Thirlwall from Little Mix whose title is 'the hype girl who brings you out of the dark', who is somebody that has got your back in any situation. She is seen wearing a glamorous pink dress with her hair tied up, sitting in the makeup and beauty room alongside KAMILLE. The video transitions back to KAMILLE and the rest of her backing dancers, with various shots of them dancing on the stairs, cleaning, and a lot of booty shaking in action. The lyrics 'every night I got you singing like a choir' could hint at some form of entertainment in the bedroom, or that she and a lover are singing romantic songs with varying keys. She also goes on to say the words 'tell them you're the baddest girl round here' almost implying that you need to have confidence within yourself and realise that you shouldn't be any less important than anybody else.
KAMILLE is seen in a blue and white dress approaching her mirror, asking 'who's the baddest of them all?' to the mirror, who is in fact singer/songwriter MNEK. After explaining to KAMILLE that she needs to believe that she is the baddest of them all, he transforms her into a new person with her long black hair, and a long black dress, with a shot of her old self lying on the floor. This could indicate that until people dress up or feel confident within themselves, they are never going to feel like the 'baddest' person that they should do. All of the dancers were now also wearing black dresses and shoes at this point in the video, and seen to be performing in a Victorian styled room with slightly red walls and upgraded dance choreography. Towards the last moments of the music video, there were short shots of both Jade and MNEK, with the final shot showing Jade writing the word 'baddest' in capital letters on the mirror.
I think this was a really creative and innovative music video, bringing together such great artists, but also allowing everybody to reminisce to the old times when all we had to worry about was a Princess not being able to find her Prince...and then being reunited, compared to the current times where we are dealing with a global pandemic among other things!
