Kacey Musgraves 'Too Good to be True' (2024) - Song Review

Updated: Mar 28

Hello everyone! After a few years I decided to come back to song and album reviews! Music video reviews will be over on my YouTube channel 'IsThatMoreBrandon' (cheeky little plug there! For today's blog I am reviewing a song called 'Too Good to be True', and sometimes there are things that are too good to be true.

At the beginning of the visual we can see a black and white shot of Kacey lying on the floor with a blurred camera in the bottom left hand side of the screen. It's a simple yet sophisticated photo which is a beautiful addition to the song. Some of the lyrics in the song begin with 'on a cloudy Monday morning' where she explains that she and somebody special are making meals together, and she adds that even though 'summer's gone, and you're still here', explaining that this connection she has with somebody is more than just a bit of a summer romance.

Other lyrics include 'don't make me regret opening up every part of myself' which I guess is an important line to mention, as sometimes when you start falling in love with someone and sharing some of your personal life, you're not really sure where the conversation might go and if you might be judged/stereotyped about certain things you say. In this song, I feel like maybe Kacey has opened up before to somebody and been shut down, so she's being extra careful that she's not wasting her time and energy on somebody who's not worth her time. 'Be good and I'll be good to you' were other lyrics that Kacey sang in the song, and as simple as the lyrics are to understand, it also is very difficult to trust people all of the time, and I think her she is just reinforcing the fact that if she is treated right, she will treat people the way she is treated which an important thing to understand in life, whether it's family, friendships, love or anything else. Her voice here went a little higher on the octive and was sang really nicely, and she added the words 'don't be too good to be true'. I think this could simply be analysed as somebody who looks like the perfect person, and hopefully acts in the same way.

The final lyrics I wanted to analyse for this song were 'baby now it's our town' where she describes herself and her lover moving to New York, which she says they have never been to before, and it's the most romantic part of the song as she labels it as 'their town', potentially where they will have eachother and live together forever. It was a lovely romantic song and she has a lovely melodic tone to her voice as well!
