June 2021: New tracks from the month that you should be adding to your playlist

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

For today's blog post, I thought I would try and summarise as many of the latest songs that have been released over the last month (that were also in my recommendations). The songs include a musical comeback from Ed Sheeran and Lorde, along with 2 tracks from female rapper Doja Cat, The Voice UK's Becky Hill and Strictly star HRVY! Without further delay, here's my reviews!

Billie Eilish 'Lost Cause' (2nd June 2021)

The first track on this list is a new tune from Billie Eilish, rocking her new long blonde hair! The style of the music video seems to be very relaxed and fun, and she is seen hanging out with a group of girls who are probably some of her friends, or that she's spending more time with friends than worrying about a relationship. In the song she describes somebody not buying her flowers and talks about her lover being 'nothing but a lost cause' as he doesn't have a job and their relationship doesn't seem to be like it was before. In the video, I like all the different video shots and outside scenes of the girls enjoying themselves, as it shows that you don't need a partner to be happy, as long as you've got your friends and family!

blackbear (ft Tate McRae) 'u love u' (4th June 2021)

Up next is a new collaboration with blackbear and Tate McRae on a song called 'u love u'. In the song the opening lyrics seem to describe that blackbear may have had problems with drugs and alcohol in the past just to 'feel something' as he might not have been getting something out of his lover. The music video all seems to be shot outside and there's a lot of smoke, white bin bags and dark interior shots within a building which help the music video visually pleasing as well as relatable. The lyrics of the song seem to explain that they are in love with somebody who just seems to be in love with themselves. They both sing the words 'can you tell me what you want from me?' which suggests that this selfish individual doesn't appreciate the current affection that they are receiving, and in order for them to finally understand that they need to start caring for other people, a song has been created to raise awareness of this issue amongst other people that might be able to relate.

Becky G & El Alfa 'Fulanito' (4th June 2021)

I thought I would listen to this next song from Becky G as she has collaborated with some incredible artists in the past, as well as Cher Lloyd, an X Factor contestant from 2011. In this video, Becky seems to be dancing outside in a local neighbourhood with her group of girls, and her collaborator El Alfa has his dance squad with him as well. The entire video is very colourful and there's lots of great dancing from everyone involved. Towards the end of the music video, the groups seem to merge together and there is a great variety of shots, slow pacing of the camera and it makes me really jealous that I'm not actually able to travel to these lovely places because all the borders are closed (or only open for 'emergency' reasons).

Dua Lipa 'Love Again' (4th June 2021)

In this next music video, the lyrics of the song explain that she is used to be in the love game, and not being able to find somebody who understands her. The visuals to accompany the lyrics show a cowbot hat floating through the air and onto Dua Lipa's head, where she is seen sitting on a horse. The shots that show Dua and her backing dancers are really interesting to watch, as they seem to be totally unaware of what's happening in a different room with 3 cowboys trying to wrap their ropes around an egg? Not sure what's actually happening in the video or what the egg represents, butit almost seems like a cowboy movie and a comedy at the same time! Dua looks amazing in her black cowgirl outfit and the environment of the music video looks like a royal palace! At the end, you can see that she has clown makeup on her face and is embracing somebody very tightly...who we can only imagine is her new boyfriend!

Coldplay 'Higher Power' (8th June 2021)

The next music video is from Coldplay which seems to be situated in an external galaxy with bright lights and galaxy like elements such as bright lights, glowing copies of planets and even some words on buildings that aren't in English! There are also a variety of weird looking individuals who seem to be the backing dancers, and also able to inject some of their power into the main singer in the video. I think the song is about somebody who is able to help the main singer come out of his shell, which makes him 'sing every second, dancing every hour'. Towards the end of the music video, it seems like the main singer is trying to run away from this world that is out of space, to almost come back to reality and enjoy being in love!

Kurupt FM (ft Craig David) 'Summertime' (9th June 2021)

This new song featuring Craig David seems to be another summer song that I think we all need at this time! It features a lot of DJ's and rappers, as well as a mixture of backing dancers and comedy aspects which makes the video memorable. During the scenes, there are some bloopers that seem to be included, such as the car dealer who is aware the boys want to go on a 'test drive' with a car, but they haven't actually gone anywhere, and the girls in the hot tub seem to all be leaving the set. The setting of the music video is supposed to be somewhere hot (like Miami) but I think they have obviously found locations that look like holiday resorts, and the party vibe with drinks and food makes it more entertaining!

Lorde 'Solar Power' (10th June 2021)

After a lot of time away from social media and creating original music, Lorde is back with a new single called 'Solar Power'. The overall vibe of the music video seems to be quite relaxing, and she can be seen dancing on a beach in a yellow bra and matching dress, and at 24 years old, she still looks just as incredible as when she was first in the public eye many years ago! Some of the lyrics explain that she has 'no shirt, no shoes, only her features' which could explain that she doesn't want to be judged purely based on what she is wearing. She also describes herself as a 'prettier Jesus' which could explain that she's always wanting to do good things for other people, and doesn't necessarily expect anything in return. The word 'solar' being used in the title of the song could explain that she's more powerful than she was before, her love life is flourishing, and she's ready to make her comeback into the music game and take over the pop music world once again! She's already announced her 'Solar Power' tour for 2022 and her album is to be released on August 20th 2021, so it might be time to review the album to see what the lyrics are all about!

Doja Cat 'Need To Know' (11th June 2021)

In this music video Doja seems to be seen as her alter ago who is an alien wearing a red top and trousers and is seen to progress from a pre drinks with her friends, into a flying Uber, into a nightclub where she seems to have had a little flirt with one of the guys at the club. During the video there are lots of references to sex, love, romance and flexibility, with Doja explaining that she's learnt some new tricks and is wondering what the lucky guy's schedule is, so that they can meet up. There is also a scene after they get into the club where she is seen dancing very erotically and sexually with one of the guys at the club, speaking about feedback she has had about him from other girls, explaining that she's ready for action. It's quite an explicit song, but Doja and her friends all look really cool in their outfits, and the scene looks like one of the stills from a game called Jackbox, which looks like an alien spaceship.

Calum Scott 'Biblical' (11th June 2021)

The next song on this list is an emotional ballad by Britain got Talent's Calum Scott who appeared on the show back in 2015. In the song he seems to be singing about somebody special who he wants to be with for the ret of his life, explaining 'I want to have it all with you', adding that when they open their eyes, he'll be there by their side. In the video, he is seen wearing a yellow coloured jacket, and there are shots of various other couples who are seen to be making out under water, including a guy with long orange hair along with some of the other musicians. I think the reference to the word 'Biblical' suggests that the person he is falling for, seems to follow the rules by the book or doesn't feel the need to do anything dangerous or out of line. Calum has such an amazing voice, and there is so much emotion in this song, it shows how much love he has for this special individual, and at the end of the video he is seen sitting in his chair once again, but wet!

Alex Warren 'One More I Love You' (11th June 2021)

Up next is YouTuber Alex Warren who has had this song written since he was 15 years old, and I think it's a song dedicated to the loss of his father. It's a really sad topic for a music video, but when you lose somebody who's really close to you, the best thing to try and do is live your best life, as that would be what they want you to do, or to think of all the great memories you have with those people to ensure that they are not forgotten. In the music video, Alex can first be seen as a younger form of himself, explaining that his mother turned to alcohol and towards the end of the video, he is seen performing with a choir of singers who added some harmony to the rest of the lyrics. I think it's important for people to be open and honest with their emotions and feelings rather than keeping them trapped inside, as if you've got friends and family who are supportive, it can often help put your mind at ease and allow you to focus on getting back to your ordinary lfie.

HRVY '1 Day 2 Nights' (14th June 2021)

Up next is HRVY with his new single '1 Day 2 Nights' which is set in a busy office environment where HRVy seems to be the spokesperson for the rest of his team. He is seen walking into the office and has his eyes on one special blonde haired lady who seems to be a fellow colleague of his. In the music video, I think the lyrics simply explain that even though HRVY hasn't known this girl for very long, he wants to be involved with the 'dun duh duh duh' with her, which shows that he's already fallen for her. Throughout the music video there seem to be lots of extra surprises which include guys playing musical instruments, girls in bikinis (which seems to be one step ahead of Love Island which is due to start tomorrow!), and also the colleagues becoming more confident and celebrating with HRVY after delivering his motivational speech.

Joy Crookes 'Feet Don't Fail Me Now' (17th June 2021)

Up next is Joy Crookes with a song which seems to be about being the best version of herself. She sings about always retweeting things online and signing petitions and she explains that she needs to try and use her priviledge in order to 'stand my ground'. The music video seems to include lots of colours, lots of religious outfits and embraces her own personal life throughout the style of the music. There are also shots in the music video such as when she is sitting on a motorbike and hovering in the air, which is visually very pleasing but also tackles the idea of 'what men can do' and 'what females can do', and that all people should just be treated the same, no matter their preferred pronouns or lifestyle choices. I think the title of the song hints at the fact that she's always on her feet trying to meet new people, give people advice and knowledge about the difficulties about being in a minority group, and she's able to showcase that through her lyrics and the inclusivity of different looks that she portrays in the video.

Becky Hill & David Guetta 'Remember' (25th June 2021)

In this incredibly colourful music video featuring The Voice UK's Becky Hill who appeared on the first series back in 2012, she sings about a toxic relationship that she used to once be in, singing about whether she thinks she is 'finally doing OK' but remembers the way that she was treated. In the video she is also joined by a small group of female dancers, and there is a statue which is tied up with rope whichmight symbolise that she might have felt trapped in her previous love affair, and now she's the one that's in charge. It's a great collaboration which definitely makes for a really good club anthem. Becky also showcases a variety of different looks such as wearing a bright pink dress in a blue and purple lit corridor, and also a more casual oufit of a red top and baggy trousers. Towards the end of the music video she can be seen in a pink leather jacket, standing in front of a pink and purple backdrop where she sings the final lyrics which include the words; 'when I wake up and don't see your name on my phone' which suggest that she's better off now that she isn't able to see contact details for this person in her phone and that she doesn't have to deal with any complications from somebody that she doesn't care about anymore.

Doja Cat & The Weeknd 'You Right' (25th June 2021)

Here is another song from Doja Cat on this list of songs that were released in June of 2021. In the song, Doja seems to explain that she's got a boyfriend but she has feelings for another guy. She is joined in the song by The Weeknd who is seen wearing an all black suit and looks really smart throughout the video. In one of the scenes, you can see Doja and her boyfriend sitting in bed, and she is scrolling on an app called 'The Pattern', before walking outside and looking into the sky with her boyfriend wrapping his hands around her waist. There is also a scene which shows The Weeknd tipping water down on top of Doja and she quickly moves a bucket so she can catch some of his glorious water which she would probably be able to keep for herself.

Nessa Barrett 'counting crimes' (25th June 2021)

18 year old TikTok star Nessa Barrett is the next singer on the list with a new single, called 'counting crimes'. The music video seems to explain that Nessa has had a toxic relationship somebody, stating how that if she did almost half of what he did, it would make her 'holy'. There are lots of pink, purples and blues in the music video, including Nessa's all pink outfit, with lots of girls who have masks covering their face, which could suggest that they could have got upto some trouble in order to get lots of money. There is also a shot which shows Nessa sitting in a bath covered in necklaces and jewellery which adds to the cost of the items featured in the video, and it's a very visually pleasing video.

Luke Richards 'All I Really Want' (25th June 2021)

Up next is an unknown singer/songwriter called Luke Richards with his newest single 'All I Really Want' which seems to be a song about somebody he is wanting to be in a relationship with. The overall vibe of the music video is quite casual and fun, with lots of vlog-like shots appearing on the screen, showing the boys cooking, hanging out with eachother and even moving furniture around. The video shots of Luke are really cool as there are lots of interesting backing lights and close up shots of his face which allow you to see the emotion through his eyes. Towards the end of the video, Luke can be seen on a romantic rose date with the girl he has been singing about, with lyrics suggesting that she should just enjoy a glass of wine...which leads to them holding hands, feeding eachother food and enjoying a kiss which brings the music video to a close!

Ed Sheeran 'Bad Habits' (25th June 2021)

The final song on this list is from Ed Sheeran who has made an amazing comeback to the music game after taking some time off to get inspiration for his new music, but also to focus on his friends and family. The overall theme of the music video is simply Ed explaining how he has had to change his bad habits since becoming a father. He is seen wearing a pink blazer with his spiky hair on show. The video seems to involve a lot of chaos with people running around, falling over and involved with all sorts of zombie-iested behaviour, whilst Ed seems to be unaware of the ensire situation and happens to bring all these weird and wonderful people into the same location. When the night time turns into daytime, all of the zombies disappear and Ed Sheeran appears as his normal self, playing the guitar. He speaks about things not happening after 2am, which could suggest that it's going to be early nights for him instead of partying all night, and 'conversations with people he doesn't even know' could also relate to his regular chats with new potential lovers, but now he's got a lady in his life, there's no need for that to happen anymore! Reflecting on things like this is definitely a step in the right direction of self love and self development, as with age, people always improve how they want to be perceived by the world, so it's good that this is the returning track for Ed. He has a lot of influence in the music world, so let's see if other people follow in his footsteps and turn their negative habits into positive action!
