James Smith 'My Oh My' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

For today's music video review I decided to check out James Smith's new video for 'My Oh My'. He is best known for appearing on Britain's Got Talent back in 2014, but I think 2021 will be a great year for him in terms of his music career! Without further delay, here's my review of the music video.

There was a nice introduction shot of a variety of people looking into the camera, almost getting ready to tell their own story. Throughout the music video, these individuals became the main focus and they were able to show their emotions, unique backgrounds/environments and also seem to be able to tell their stories. Some of Jame's lyrics included 'feel a little differently lately, think I've lost my mind' which could explain that something has happened in James' life that has made him feel different, and use of the words 'losing my mind' might mean that it's not necessarily a good change that's occured.

Other lyrics that James sings include 'trying to pick up all the pieces you left behind' which could give the impression that whoever he has separated from, has left some memories for him to try and re-live, or that idea of wanting to pick up the pieces, could puzzle together why they broke up in the first place. I think it's quite obvious that this song is about a romance, relationship or potentially somebody he felt close with. James continues to sing the lyrics 'can't even call you baby because you're no longer mine' which suggests that whoever the mystery lover was, might already be in a new relationship, or because they're no longer together, he has to try and get out of the habit of referring to this person as 'baby'. He adds 'you're on my mind but out of my arms, was it my oh my, my fault' which shows that James might be quite upset about the breakup, wondering whether it was something that he did which broke it up. The fact that James sings about this person being on his mind, means that there might be some interest from his side, but whether a reunion happens in the future is unknown!

In the final part of the music video, I was able to see the various backgrounds and environments used in the music video, with various backgrounds for all of the people included, showing their individual lifestyles, and James seems to be standing on a roof with houses and a grey sky in the background which could also be the current mood that he's feeling. In the final chorus, there seems to be a choir of people singing 'my my' which is a nice transition into the final part of the song. The final shots show the shots of the individuals from the beginning of the video, and again they seem to be staring straight into the camera again, before a closing shot of James also looking into the camera, with a blurred end.
