Hey everyone!
For today's music video review, I will be listening to James Arthur's new single called 'Medicine'. Since releasing his cover of Shontelle's 'Impossible' back in 2012, James has released so many amazing tracks which have gone on to win numerous awards, and have also been covered by singers all around the world. He recently collaborated with Anne Marie on their rendition of 'Re-write the Stars' from The Greatest Showman Soundtrack, and I think he will be releasing more original music this year! Here's my video review!
At the beginning of the video, it sounded like there was a short rock introduction which quickly transitioned into a variety of scenes with red and green flashing lights. James seems to be rocking his new short hairstyle as well, which actually really suits him! Some of the opening lyrics in this song include 'you put your body on mine' and 'you are the cure for all my scars' which are both lines that give me the impression that whoever this mysterious woman is, they have walked into James' life when he needed help and support the most. I think that the song title 'Medicine' can relate back to James having problems with drugs and drinking alchohol which are things he mentions in this music video, describing this individual as 'better than any coke', referring to cocaine. Other lyrics that James sings include 'I feel like you could save me now when I'm suicidal, don't let me spiral' which could explain that James has been going through some difficult times alone, but just by having a supportive person by his side, it makes it easier for him to confide in them, and knows that he can trust somebody.
The opening lyrics of the chorus include the line 'you make my heart beat faster than adrenaline', which is something that is almost close to being impossible, but he almost seems to describe the feeling of being excited or nervous for something, as meaningful as having somebody in his life who is able to make him feel the same way. There are a variety of shots showing James dancing with this mysterious girl in the music video, which almost seems like a fancy version of a haunted house. there are a lot of flashing lights with transitions showing James in different angles and positions, with an interesting shot of him placing his hand on a mirror and seeing a younger version of himself in the reflection. Towards the end of the music video you can see James and his mystery lover touching and hugging eachother, without actually kissing or taking their actions further. The final shot is of an old fashioned red telephone which James looks at, before staring down into the camera. This could be a hint that if he feels like he needs to talk, he will pick up the phone, or the phone could have started ringing and he has to decide whether he wants to answer it, and potentially have to deal with somebody else's problems, or if it's a call that will help him feel more relaxed and confident within himself. I think this is a great comeback song with an incredibly relatable meaning for a lot of people in the world at the moment, and it's also great to see his development as an individual, and the way he is able to convey stories through a 2-3 minute song is absolutely amazing to be able to listen to!
