'I'm A Celebrity' 2020 - Week 1 Review (15th November to 20th November)

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all!

I was initially going to do a DAILY update for the show, but realised that I might end up passing out after the first week, so I thought I'd summarise what happens each night and include it into a weekly review! Please bear in mind that these summaries probably won't be detailed!

Sunday 15th November 2020

This episode showed us the camp mates' first day at Gwrych Castle and saw them take part in their first group trial! When entering the location, 5 of the celebrities; (Beverley, Mo, Shane, Hollie and AJ) were at the bottom of a wall, with the other 5; (Vernon, Jessica, Victoria, Giovanna and Jordan) remaining at the top. They were each put into pairs, and had to help their team mate to climb down the wall and retrieve both bags! They were only able to do this if they answered certain trivial questions correctly, which everyone (thankfully) managed to do! The most entertaining part of this episode was the fast that Jordan (the radio presenter) actually vomited ON television because of how nervous he was to go down the wall...which is understandable if you're afraid of heights.

They were welcomed into the castle, and Ant & Dec showed us what their 'new home' would look like for the next 3 weeks, compared to sunny Australia which was outside in the wild. The toilet was an improvement from before, with some of the campmates calling it 'lovely' and we saw Shane attempt to use the hammock, and subsequentally fall off quite quickly! Once they were all settled in, it was over to Ant & Dec to reveal their first group task which was called 'Gates of Hell' and saw them all being locked into individual cages. The aim of the task was to simply move the stars from one side to the other, using either their hands of the metal pole (in every other cage). But all was not what it seemed, as there were all sorts of cockroaches and slithery thing thrown them while they were trying to concentrate...unfortuntately Beverley seemed a little slow in moving the stars across, but the team still managed to get 7/10 stars, which meant 7/10 meals for camp!

We saw a short video clip of Shane helping AJ have his first shower; which needed to be manually pumped by somebody else, as drips of water sprinkle out of a water can. We also found out that both Shane and Jordan would both be taking part in the first proper trial on tomorrow's show (16th November). The trial is called 'Viper Vault' which involves both of them entering individual 'coffin like' boxes, which were to be filled with snakes! I couldn't even imagine it, wait, I can, and I don't like it!

Monday 16th November 2020

At the beginning of this episode we saw Hollie summon the new squad of campmates into doing a morning workout...(probably to sweat off the rabbit they had for dinner the night before!). Anyways, that was entertaining to watch...but then we saw Vernon and Jordan have their first 'bro' shower time, sprinkling the water at quite a fast speed! Jordan admitted that he probably enjoyed it a little more than he should have done, and praised Vernon for looking so good at his age! (And also hoped that Tess Daly wasn't watching, as she's Vernon's partner! #Awkward).

It was then time for the moment everyone had been waiting for...'Viper Vault'. Before the challenge even started, Jordan was already in a state of nerves (being compared to the likes of Helen Flanagan and Gillian McKeith from previous series' of the show, not being able to do any challenges); BUT Shane had confidence in him, and they both got into the coffins! After many shrieks and screams, the boys were able to get 9/10 stars which meant 9 meals for camp! Unfortunately it wasn't a 'delicious meal' as first explained by Ant & Dec, but was in fact a 'delicious eel'. Gross! Shane also took the lead with the cooking, admitting it's not exactly his forte, but he gave it a go! Victoria was in charge of cutting up the eel, but most of the campmates including Jordan couldn't eat it...Mo described it as 'very slippery' and Victoria joked that they might as well have not done the trial, and that she would have preferred beans and rice. I agree with you on that one!

At the end of the episode, Ant & Dec went into the castle and revealed the next trial was an eating trial called 'Frights of the Round Table' and that Beverley, Jordan and Vernon were going to be taking part!

Tuesday 17th November 2020

At the beginning of this episode, we saw Mo Farah going for a little run around the castle, and it was Victoria & Shane to 'clean the privy'; known as a toilet in English. It was over to Holly and Giovanna to take part in the first challenge, called the 'Castle Coin Challenge' where they had to match a said quote to the right celebrity. Some of the phrases included AJ, admitting he wants to be a bit like Bruce Forsyth, Jordan we the bed until 15 years of age, Giovanna's wedding was viewed more than 22 million times, Hollie is secretely a singer, and Shane has gone go karting with Tom Cruise!

Hollie and Giovanna had the option of winning twiglets of welsh cakes from Kiosk Cledwyn's 'Ye Olde Shoppe', but it was over to the rest of the camp mates to answer a question correctly. 'What % of Brits have at least one conversation a day about the weather (A - 26% or B 44%). They chose answer B, but it was wrong! No welsh cakes for camp!

Up next was Beverley, Jordan and Vernon's eating challenge and below was what they had to eat (Just imagine you're in your happy place and it should be easy enough).

Vernon 1 - 'Lamb Rank' (Sheep's Brain)

Beverley 1 - 'Cheesefuit Vomlette' (Vomit Fruit)

Jordan 1 - 'Steak & Eyele Pie' (Goat's Eyes)

Then there were two random spins where Beverley spun for Vernon to eat Cow's Teets, and Jordan spun himself into eating Fermented Cat Fish!

Vernon 3 - 'Nuts Roast' (Deer Testicle)

Beverley 2 - 'Falafel Wraps' (Fermented Plums)

Jordan 3 - Well, he just had to eat a sheep's willy!

The final two spins were from Vernon, who spun for Beverley, resulting in her eating 'Dread and Butter Pudding' (Fermented Tofu) and Beverley spun for Jordan who ate 'Spotted Lick' (Cow's Tongue)! Gross, but they won 10/10 stars! As a winning result, the camp mates' meal was 'Quail' with Garlic and onions, amongst other things! Jessica added that it was nice to eat something with flavour, comparing it to KFC...it's not really the same, but I guess they aren't going to complain when they're in the middle of nowhere with no food!

Before the episode ended, we found out that the next challenge was called 'Stage Fright' and ALL 10 of the camp mates were taking part in that...OR SO THEY THOUGHT! The two new arrivals Russell Watson and Ruthie Henshall who are both natural born performers were going to 'prove themselves' by taking part in the challenge before meeting the others in the castle!

Wednesday 18th November 2020

To begin this episode, we saw Shane and Victoria speaking about stand up comedy, with Victoria explaining that she needs to try and tell jokes as if she's just in an ordinary conversation without trying to hard to be funny...I think she told some of the other campmates about how as a BBC news reporter she has to be impartial when it comes to discussing shops that she goes to...admitting it's something she's dealt with since she was 'Lidl'...I did giggle a little bit, I hope you did 'Tui'!

It was Vernon's time to shine again as he spoke about some great parts of his career so far, which included television shows he has hosted including Family Fortunes and interviews he has been a part of. It apparently took 20 minutes to look for Elton John's glasses, and was such a fan boy of Tom Hanks, he asked for something to be signed! That's cute!

We found out the name of the next trial was called 'The Trapped Door' and that we would find out at the end of the episode! AJ and Jessica then took part in a challenge where they had to manouvre the right barrel (with an attached key), to a lock which would give them coins to use at the shop! After many attempts and many more puns from AJ including the fact that they were having a 'Barrel of Laughter' or 'Thinking Outside the Box', they finally got the key and won the coins! It was over to the rest of the campmates to answer a question correctly, which was to name the colours on the Welsh flag; A- Red, White and Green or B- Red, White, Green and Yellow! They chose A, it was right, and they chose to bring back bread and butter to the camp, rather than sweet popcorn; with Jessica stating that it's something you eat if you're on a diet!

Up next was for the 10 campmates to take on their next trial; 'Fright Night' but Ant & Dec revealed that they would only be watching...before welcoming Russell and Ruthie as their new campmates! There were then 12 stars up for grabs in a variety of 3 different 'performances'. The first challenge was worth 5 stars, and involved the newbies to match a joke with its correct punchline; and Russell chose to retrieve the punchline from a barrel, and therefore Ruthie was put in stocks! The jokes were;

'What did medieval postman wear?' - Chain mail,

'What do you call birds that stick together?' - Vel crows,

'Why was Sir Lancelot always tired?' - He worked nights,

'What is a King's favourite weather?' - A long rain and

'Why did the Queen go to the densit?' - To get her teeth crowned!

In total they got 4/5 of the answers correct, which was a great first impression!

The second challenge was called 'Eye Scream' and was worth 2 stars, and involved both Russell and Ruthie to move 3 eyes into 3 different cups, and then crush a 4th one to add it as a 'sauce' (imitating an interval snack)...and they won both of the two available stars! The third and final challenge called 'Critters in your Knickers' required the newbies to dance to a total of 5 soongs; whilst also having thousands of little critters around their areas...which Ruthie correctly added were 'nippy'! The 5 songs were the Macarena, Beyonce's 'Single Ladies', Gangnam Style - the viral song by PSY, Birdy Shop and Tina Turner's 'Proud Mary'. The other campmates were able to guess all 5 songs correctly, so in total there were a total of 11/12 meals won for camp!

Speaking of meals, the campmates were treated to oxtail (which is the tail of a cattle) but some of the campmates added that there wasn't very much meat on the bone...It was over to Giovanna, Victoria and Vernon to take control of the night's cooking and they all seemed to enjoy the meal! In the Big Brother's 'diary room' equivalent, Ruthie said that she wasn't really impressed with the meal but didn't want to seem ungrateful as she understood everyone else was hungry; and that 'according to the rest of them, that was gourmet'. I am not necessarily a fan of oxtail, but I would eat it if I was stuck in a castle in the middle of nowehere, and hungry!

To bring the episode to a close, Jordan went off to the privy to have a wee, and Shane being the cheeky joker he is, decided to throw stones on the door to make it seem like hail...or to just mess with Jordan's head! He came out calling out to see if anybody was there, admitting he kept hearing 'ping ping ping' noises, and was then subsequently scared by Shane who said 'I almost wet myself' with Jordan replying; 'I almost sh*t myself'! He did the 'pull my finger' joke before breaking wind, and both the boys were in fits of laughter. we also found out that giggly Jordan would be taking part in the next trial called 'The Trapped Door' and as a joke, somebody in the background shouted 'Let's get the beans on' - preparing in advance for no stars to be won on the challenge...but I think if Jordan can think of his happy place, he'll do fine!

Thursday 19th November 2020

At the beginning of this episode without even seeing another trial, the campmates (including the new arrivals), woke up from their 'hard beds' as described by Ruthie, explaining that they didn't have a good night's sleep. Shane and Victoria had a little Welsh kiss which Shane hoped her husband wouldn't see 'I hope Mark's not watching!' - but it was only a bit of morning banter!

Ruthie went to dry some clothes outside and was greeted by the painting of a Jester, which the campmates had named 'Dave'. She was told that she had to complete a prank to his satisfaction in order to win 4/12 luxury items up for grabs. Her task was to get Jordan to give her a bare foot massage nwithout anybody noticing there was something strange going on...Just as the announcement finished, Vernon and Jordan walked over coincidentally and she complained that the might have a tight foot so needed somebody to give it a massage, so that seemed to be one task complete! Jordan looked unfazed, and you saw a clip of him using hand sanitizer...hopefully for at least 20 seconds!

Beverley and Shane took part in the next Castle Coin Challenge which simply saw them spotting the difference between two almost identical sheds. They each had to go into their shed and describe what they could see, putting a red hoop on things that were different! Shane asked Beverley, 'Do you have chains about your head' - adding that they're similar to what he has in his room. Beverley called it the '50 shades of Shane'.

Ruthie was asked to get Russell, as they were going to complete the second prank together. Their joint task was to purposely answer the question incorrectly, once Beverley and Shane reached Kiosk Cledwyn's 'Ye Olde Shoppe'. The question was 'What was Shakespeare's first name when he was baptised?'; A- William or B-Walter (and even a non historian knows that there's no such thing as 'Walter Shakespeare', but both Ruthie and Russell managed to persuade the rest of the campmates that it was Walter, which saw them losing the custard creams that Beverley and Shane won (rather than ready salted crisps); BUT knowing they've just won another 4 luxury items for the rest of their campmates!

The final task to retrieve the last 4 items, was for Russell to head off to sleep and wake up screaming, pretenting he's seen a ghost...He quietly mentioned to Victoria that he had a bit of a headache and went off to sleep, with the others wishing him well...and I'm not sure how long after he screamed, but it must have been less than 5 minutes later. ALL of the campmates came rushing over to see what happened, and Russell even admitted that whilst he was making up this story and seeming really scared on the outside, he was filled with inner giggles! (It was a great prank to be honest!). Jordan said that he now felt a little scared, as Russell described a 'woman with white hair in a gown, walking pas the wall', Shane adding 'Does she have food?' and Vicoria stating 'I do not believe in ghosts, let's be rational here'. Vernon basically summarised Russell's time in the castle so far, stating that 'he chipped his tooth, bashed his head, got the answer wrong when he was so sure he was right, had a migraine and now he's seen a ghost' - what else could go wrong for him???

Up next in the show was Jordan's trial 'Trapped Door' which saw him go down a trapped door (obviously), collecting upto 12 stars in a tunnel resembling the film 'The Great Escape'. He was able to retrieve the first four stars very quickly, the second group of stars saw him manouvering another four stars from one side of a pipe to the other end with just some mealworms, maggots and crickets falling on his head repeatedly. Jordan was obviously thinking about his lucky place, having small chat with both Ant & Dec whilst he was in there, to try and forget about the trial he was on! Towards the end of the trial, he was rummaging around a pod which was filled with toad's and was unable to find the star. Ant & Dec reassured him that there was definitely a star in there, so he needed to keep on looking, but he ran out of time. Once he came out of the trapped space and revealed how many stars he won...he brought out all twelve, so he could have come out 2 minute earlier according to Dec, and he almost just stayed in there for a bit of fun! After he got back to camp, everyone was really happy as that meant they were able to have food and Jessica added that she was so proud of him, as this was 'vomit on the side of a cliff edge Jordan' who proved himself as a worthy campmate by completing his own solo task!

Ant & Dec announced the new trial which would be taking place on Sunday called 'Fort Locks' and the chosen person was going to be revealed at the end of the show. Whilst the campmates were waiting for their 'dinner' of squirrel, shittake mushrooms and dragon fruit for dessert, Jordan thought Beverley suggested he 'get some eggs' when in fact she said 'great legs'...it was a funny little moment! Also, it was over to Ruthie and Russell to reveal the truth behind some of their weird antics throughout the day, including Jordan's foot rub, how they mistook 'William Shakespeare' for 'Walter' and Russell's ghostly scare, stating that they were pranks, but 12/12 luxury items were won for the campmates!

What did they each win?

Mo - a poser from his kids, saying that they love Ant and Dec, but they prefer Ant

Vernon - a blanket which is always on his sofa at home

Jordan - a Burnley football scarf (his happy place)

AJ - curly hair cream...yeah, that's what gives him the curly hair!

Victoria - photograph of her husband Mark, and young children Ollie and Joe

Hollie - a dressing gown she has owned for over 10+ years

Beverley - a pink hair brush

Shane - a Disney princess shower gel (making him smell like Pocohontas!)

Jessica - a mug with a picture of her and her daughter

Russell - his 'number one' pillow

Giovanna - she decided to have a classic S Club 7 single 'Reach foe the stars' played for the rest of the campmates!

We found out at the end of the episode that it was either AJ or Mo that would be taking part in the next trial...and the public chose MO!

Friday 20th November 2020

Another busy day in the castle, another night of snoring...well, that was just Beverley along with moments where she was talking in her sleep. Some of the other campmates revealed that it was pretty quiet during the evenings/early mornings, but Shane and Mo would occasionally break wind during their sleep as well. Beverley revealed that she had previously given sports training to Arnold Schwarzenegger, adding that it took him eighteen months to grow over an inch of muscle on each leg! Jordan asked Hollie how many total medals she had won, and she said four consecutive championship gold medals. Russell added that he got the 'rear of the year' award; comparing himself to Vernon 'How can a 6'4 man like him not win? He got beaten by little me!' - or something along that phrasing. Russell went on to explain that he gave a private show to the pope at the vatican, or that's what he thought...and he ended up performing to over 500 million people around the world. I would faint before I even began singing, if that happened to me!

The next castle coin challenge was for Mo and Victoria to take part in! Wearing their bird costumes, they had to pick up 'worms' with the bird mouths (which they controlled with their real life hands). They then had to put these 'worms' into a puzzle piece, with all the sectioned filled up! They won the coins and decided to opt for jelly worms over mixed nuts, but after getting the question incorrect, they didn't win them for camp! The question was 'According to a recent survey; how many British adults refuse to tell people their age?'. A- 22% or B- 10%...and the correct answer was B. Ant & Dec revealed that we would be finding out who is the FIRST 'camp leader' in Sunday's show; and they'll have the ability to assign rules, as well as sitting on their own camp leader chair.

Shane spoke about how he performed at Buckingham Palace just before the lockdowns, and took a toilet roll which he was surprised didn't have anything to signify royalty...Jordan joked that he should have stolen a crown...but that's illegal, so maybe not such a good idea! Ruthie and Shane had a little discussion about her encounter with Prince Edward. She was previously in shows such as Les Miserables and was cast to be the lead role in 'A star in born' (before Lady Gaga) and Prince Edward was her contact. He invited her back to the palace for a meal, and to watch the film...which she thought was weird, but it must have been a surreal experience! She also revealed that her Dad had told her how to greet the Queen, if she ever did get the chance to meet her. He said you've always got to courtesy...but instead, Ruthie shook her hand, smiled lots and said 'It's so lovely to meet you!' (Off with her head!)

Mo's first solo trial of the series was next! In short, he had to put his hand into various chambers in order to retrive a key on a chain, that would open a chamber on the other side of the cage! This would allow him to retrieve a star, which in total...there were 12 that he could win! The first key was yellow, and the star had to be retrieved from a chamber of worms, the second was red, filled with locusts on the other side, and then green, filled with cockroaches...Other animals/insects that were included within the challenge were rats, water dragons, pigeons and fish guts...if that counts? In the end, he won 9/12 stars for camp and they had cuttlefish; which AJ described as an 'alien'. Victoria spoke quietly to some of the other campmates saying that she was tempted to tell one of the other campmates to shower because they smelt really bad...but who was she talking about?

The final part of this episode saw all twelve of the campmates taking part in a LIVE challenge, with the girls (ladies) on Team Blue and the boys (lords) on Team Red. The winners of the four part challenge would receive a royal banquet, and the losers would be eating rice and beans, and also taking part in Sunday night's trial! Uh oh. Round one was called 'Terror Trough' which saw Jordan and Shane go against Hollie and Ruthie. Their challenge was to remove coins from a gunky bath and place them in their team bucket...whilst avoiding the fish guts which wouldn't give their team any points. After this round, the boys were up 3-2, with Ruthie pretending that they got three as well, and Dec confirming that she told a little porkie pie! Tut tut...

The second game 'Critter Cages' saw Vernon and Victoria go head to head. They were each locked in a separate cage, and had to use their hands to get the coins off of the coils, and into their team bucket! They were surrounded with maggots, mealworms, crickets and cockroaches...and I'm sure many people noticed Vernon scream and use the word 'f*ck' but it didn't seem to get edited out! After that round the boys were in the lead again with 14-8, but it wasn't over for the girls! Round three was called 'Savage Stocks' which saw AJ and Jessica go head to head in a game that tested their ability to have their head in a box with 5 rats and 5 naked rats; to also get the golden coins into their bucket! With a slow start from Jessica, she was still able to retrieve another eight stars for her team, equalling AJ's score! The boys moved to 22 points against the girls 16 which saw us move into the final game!

The fourth and final game was called 'Chairs of Terror' which saw the final campmates from each team Mo and Russell, take on Beverley and Giovanna. They had to reach into boxes of maggots, unthread the stars and place them into their collection bags...but each of them had a snake that was wrapped around their neck. In the final game, the boys added an extra nine to their total, with the girls adding eight! The final results were 31-24 to the boys...meaning they got the banquet, and the girls had rice and beans, but also were going to be taking part in the next challenge which was called 'Barbaric'!

Until Sunday, I hope you enjoyed the review!
