Hey everyone!
For today's music video review, I am taking a look at Giveon's new video for 'Heartbreak Anniversary' which is a really interesting title, but I think it's something to do with love going wrong, as heartbreak isn't a good thing! I've not heard much about this artist apart from the fact that he's American, so without further ado, here's my written review!
At the beginning of this music video there is a bright pink title to introduce the video, with a nice transition to a shot of Giveon walking next to his car with a beautiful evening sunset in the background, clearly next to a train track line. In this shot it's clear that there is a female passenger who doesn't look too happy, and after taking a few minutes to enjoy the fresh air, Giveon gets back in his car and then they drive off. At this point in the music video, I'm unsure what the relationship is between the two characters but I feel that there is a problem because they don't seem to be enjoying eachother's company.
In a transition to the next shot, Giveon is sitting down in an empty room, singing to himself with the room door open. Some of the lyrics include 'still got your things here, they stare at me like souvenir' which could simply mean that although the couple aren't together anymore, the items that have been left at his home could remind him of the good memories that they once had togethere, with 'souvenir' often being a physical item that can make you think about experiences in the past. He also sings the lyrics 'don't want to let you out my head' which could mean that he's more into the lover, which seems to be a female in this case, than she is into him. I think this is something that often happens with relationships, as one person might want to move on, and the other person might become an emotional wreck, and they could also feel lost without that special person being in their life.
Throughout the video there are a lot of black and white clips reminiscing over the good times that this couple had, and the drastic change in mood from good to bad. Giveon sings the line 'it's cold outside, like when you walked out of my life' which decribes the cold weather, but also the fact that his heart could have been feeling very good as there is nobody to love. In the video, you can also see Giveon driving the female lover to her own house, entering and having a short argument before leaving and driving away on his own. I like how the story of their relationship is being told in a chronological order, but there are also different shots inserted to break up the shots of Giveon driving, and the both of them just arguing for the entire video. Some of Giveon's other lyrics include 'I'm building my hopes up' which is something that often happens in relationships if you feel that you're going to be given a second chance, but he continues to mention that he still reads the messages that this lover sent, admitting that he's being 'foolishly patient' when instead he should just be focusing on himself and putting this particular relationship to bed. Giveon's final lyrics include 'do you think of me, because I still think of you?' and this is quite an important phrase, as the song title has the word 'anniversary', so maybe the day that he released this music video, is the day after so many years that he broke up with this particular lover. The music video seems to end with a really dark shot of Giveon standing infront of his car, with just street lights keeping him company. You can see that he is looking down towards the floor, before lifting his head, almost coming to a realisation that this love is over, and he might be looking into the distance, thinking about his future lover!
