Hey all,
Today's music review is a collaboration between three rappers; Ghetts, Stormzy and Ghetto, and their music video for 'Skengman' was released on 15th January 2021, so here's my review!
I didn't know what to expect from this music video but I was pleasantly surprised, as this isn't my favourite genre of music, but I love the way it all got put together! The overall vibe of the music video was set in black and white which makes you focus more on the lyrics and the dancing of the rappers involved. At the beginning of the video, each of the characters got introduced with different graphics and animinations, similar to what you would see at the beginning of a Marvel short film or movie which was really creative, with the words 'Skengman mode' being spoken repeatedly.
I think all of the verses throughout the song were really cool, although I wasn't able to understand the specific meaning behind most of the lyrics. In Stormzy's verse, he sings the words 'even in a plain t I'm flexxing' which shows that even if he is wearing the most un-fashionable clothes, he's still able to show off how hard he's worked, comparing his motivation to 'work hard like two Kris Jenners'...a member of the Kardashian/Jenner family.
The majority of the music video is set in a car park or an environment that looks like a construction site, and it's also in the city as you can see skyscraper buildings in some of the outside shots which is aesthetically pleasing but also a good representation for the city of London (which I believe is where it's filmed?!)...One of the lines I wanted to pick up on was in Ghetto's verse where he sings the line 'What the f*ck do you want from me?' - almost questioning somebody's intentions as to why they want his attention. I think that once people see others becoming successful, they try to play off any rudeness or negative encounters from the past and try to become friends with those individuals again...it's happened to me, but the best thing to do is ignore them, because they've already shown their true colours and they're not worth it.
To conclude the music video, there were a variety of fast paced shots, transitions between the various dance moves, and also some mirrored shots of the same scene which looked really cool, followed by a dance breakout at the end with all of the cast and some of the other dancers taking to the centre of the shot and doing their thing! For a 4 minute music video, they managed to cram quite a lot in, which is good for the artist but also for the viewers, and it definitely kept me engaged!
