Ellie Goulding 'Love I'm Given' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

In this blog post I will write about Ellie Goulding's song and music video for her new song 'Love I'm Given'. It was released on 19th August 2020, and below is my review!

At the beginning of the music video there are a lot of dark shots with flashing blue lights. It's a great introduction to the music video as it's quite difficult to see what's going on initially and then once more action begins to happen, everything starts coming to life. She can be scene with her wet hair and also practicing her boxing in a ring with a trainer. This is quite an interesting way to shoot the music video as it shows her in two contrasting looks. She sings the words 'I used to think that I was so invincible...I tore myself to pieces, had to put on a show' which kind of suggests that she was always trying to perform and showcase the best of herself, when actually there should have been some times where she was able to relax or take time away from performing or even the camera in general.

In another scene of the video, Ellie can be seen wearing a Princess-like golden dress singing the words 'But some things in my past I cannot change...but I can change' which hints at the fact that she can't re live her life again, but as an individual in the present she can change her ways from this moment on. She continues to sing that she can 'overcome the highs and the lows of the rising sun' which also features a lot of dancers performing around her. The next shot sees her wearing the same golden dress but lookg straight into the camera. She continues to sing 'All the things you make me feel, you make me feel better' which also explains that whoever this individual is has helped her either become more positive or mentally and physically she feels less exhausted that before. Ellie also explains that she is trying to make the most of her mistakes, which could mean that she's trying to work out what she did wrong, and use the mistakes to her advantage by never making the same mistakes again.

Towards the end of the music video, there seem to be a lot of projector graphics of the elements including rain and wind, and she looks as if she's one of those spinning tops which you have to wind up. She repeats the words 'Yeah, I've been changing the love I'm given' which could mean that people are treating her differently to how they did before, because she is able to change people's perceptions on her. She goes on to say 'maybe I'm paying for the things I've done, maybe I'm paying for the ones I've hurt' which are reflective lyrics of her past, and again she can't change those, but she can continue to change her actions now and into the future. The final part of the music video sees her wearing the same golden dress on a podium, with dancers performing in the rain, and flashing lights to bring the music video to a close.
