Dua Lipa 'Future Nostalgia' - Album Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hello! This blog post is being released one week after Dua Lipa's album was SUPPOSED to be released. The album due to come out on the 3rd April 2020, but was leaked two weeks before it's release date on the 27th March! It is the second stuio album by English Singer/Songwriter Dua Lipa, and here is my live review of all of the songs! (Including the ones I already know)...

(1) 'Future Nostalgia'

-This is the first song on the album and it's also the title of the album. It's a very bouncy song and lyrics such as 'I know you ain't used to a female alpha' prove that she is a confident female and she is speaking about domination. (7/10)

(2) 'Don't Start Now'

-I heard this song before the release of her album and it became a TikTok sensation almost straightaway. When I first heard this song I wasn't sure if it was Dua Lipa or not, but after hearing more of the song, it couldn't be anyone else. I think this song is about dealing with some form of negativity or failure (whether it be something from a friendship/relationship), and now that she is becoming successful, they want to come back into her life. In the song she also hints that she is a new person, compared to how people used to view her previously. This is probably one of my favourite tracks on the album... (9.5/10)

(3) 'Cool'

-The beginning of this song sounds a little husky and this is an interesting style of genre. This is a 'head bop' kind of song and the song transitions into a slow chorus. I believe all of the songs on the album are to do with a breakup, a negative sitation or being able to move on from something toxic. The sound is good, but I'm not sure about the chorus being so slow and choppy... (6/10)

(4) 'Physical'

-From the beginning of this song there is an amazing drum beat behind the singing. This is the style of music I love the most as it gets you into a dancing mood. There are also interesting background singers which bring the single to life. Just before the chorus she says 'Who needs to go to sleep when I got you next to me' which is a great personal touch to this song before the beat drops! The song is very simply structured but including this just makes that song a little more engaging! Again, this one of her latest releases and it's also one of the songs that has good a lot more media attention/promotion! (9/10)

(5) 'Levitating'

-The introduction to this song gave me Taylor Swift kind of vibes, and the overall vibe of the song sounds like she's in a dream or she's in a party mood. The fast singing throughout the verses are a very interest concept for this song, and it's definitely something I could hear more of. Although this is quite a slow song, it's clearly a love song where she is inviting somebody for a dance or wanting some private time with someone! (8.5/10)

(6) 'Pretty Please'

-This song has a similar vibe to 'Levitating' which a faster speed of verse, and then fades into a slower chorus with limited words. I feel like this is a very seductive song and is aimed at somebody that she likes 'I know that I seem a little stressed out. But you're here now' proves that she has fallen in love with somebody, and they have managed to calm her down! It's a very smooth song with a jumpy chorus, and the lyrics match the tune of the song to create a beautiful melody. (7.5/10)

(7) 'Hallucinate'

-From the start of this song, I can tell that this is more of a fast faced song with the constant sounding of the heartbeat throughout the verses and chorus. The chorus for this song is also very simple as she sings 'I, hallucinate' followed by 'I, hallucinate when you call my name'. I also really like this song but it sounds like there is a lot of autotune on the words just before the chorus (or the effect that's been added is just slightly weird)... (5.5/10)

(8) 'Love Again'

-With a slow introduction at the start, the song seems as if it will be an emotional ballad. I like the emphasis on some of the words in the first verse as it elevates the words from the rest of the sentence. 'Oh God Damn, you got me in love again' which is the introduction line for the chorus has proved that she may not believe if love was going to come around, and somebody has managed to steal her heart...(or bring out her emotional side)!! It's a very creative style of song with a variety of speeds and emotions that seem to be conveyed throughout the song. One of the background instuments does make the song sound like something that could be featured in a James Bond or Harry Potter movie, but other than that, the rest of the song is really cool! Definitely in the top 5! (7/10)

(9) 'Break My Heart'

-This is another one of those songs that you probably can't forget the lyrics of! The overall tune is pretty straightforward but I absolutely love the chorus of the song as there are three 'pumps' that transition into the chorus. I believe this song is about fallng in love with the wrong person, or somebody who has managed to manipulate her into loving somebody...It's definitely a fantastic track, and similarly to some of the other songs on her album, there are background singers, noises and 'Ooh' to compliment Dua's main vocals. (8.5/10)

(10) 'Good In Bed'

-In this song it almost sounds like she is speaking the words, but then the verse transitions into a verse where the lyrics go up and down in pitch. The chorus for this song is definitely something I haven't heard before, with the repetition of several words, and it's most certainly a song about sexual intercourse with someone as she says 'When you go down, I go up', along with other words and phrases. Overall, I love the funny/jokey side of the song, but it's not one of my favourites from the album because it's a little bit too different from some of the other tracks...but then surely that makes this track stand out? It's one of those songs that people will either love or hate, and I most certainly don't hate it. I'm struggling with a rating for this song, but I might shock myself with the rating... (8/10)

(11) 'Boys Will Be Boys'

-The 11th and final song on the album seems to be a song talking about how boys act or what boys do (just from the title of the song). The introduction verse is a quite slow paced and it transitions into a chorus which explains that 'Boys will be boys and Girls will be women'...In addition she says that there are always 'boys' who will follow what they see on television, or 'men' will always have a say on something. It's quite a powerful song, and the meaning behind this song is that probably a lot of girls want to speak up, but they feel that they are going to get judged for speaking up and having an opinion, which is why they create chats with other girls/women, and not involving men, as they shouldn't need a man's input to get stuff done! The message behind the song is definitely something I can agree with, and personally I know a lot of my female friends who are very strong minded and brave, but also feel like they need a guy to approve or disapprove a suggestion/decision they are making which makes me slightly sad, because they should be able to use their own judgement to decifer whether something should be done! (9/10)

So, that's my review of the Dua Lipa album 'Future Nostalgia' (released in March 2020)
