Donel Mangena (ft Swarmz) 'Bang Like A Drum' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all,

I thought I would write a quick review for Donel's single 'Bang Like A Drum' which came out earlier this year. He was the runner up on The Voice UK 2018, losing to Ruti Olajugbagbe who was on Team Tom! Without further delay, here's my music video review!

The music video is quite simple and there don't seem to be any dramatic changes throughout. From beginning to end, the location of the shoot seems to be on an industrial site with lots of colourful containers (similar to what you see if you play the computer game Fortnite!) in a variety of colours. Donel is wearing a camoflauge outfit which introduces him at the start of the video with a variety of flashing lights and bright colour! The chorus' lyrics include 'the way you dance, you make it bang like a drum' which could simply explain that the lucky individual he is talking about is fully in control of their own dancing, and that they're good at the dancing! At the beginong of the video he has a small group of male backing dancers who are wearing casual jumpers, jackets and trousers, which later transition into video shots where Donel is soon accompanied by a small group of female backing dancers!

The entire music video has extra shots showing different groups of people dancing on crates and boxes, and towards the end of the music video before the rapping begins from Swarmz, there is a massive group dance performed in the middle of the site, with a lot of close up and medium shots of different dancers. Swarmz sings the lyrics 'I can be your Romeo, you can be my Juliet' which simply say that whoever is being sung about could be the perfect fit for being in a relationship with them...and I'm not sure if both Donel and Swarmz are dedicating a song to somebody they love, or just singing a positive song, explaining that people bang their own drums, and therefore are in control of their own fate! The final shots of the music video show a variety of crates that almost create a dance tunnel, with colourful lights showing complimentary colours; including blue and purple, and red and green! I think this was a really cool music video, and I'm excited to see what new music is released by Donel soon!
