Hey everyone!
In today's music review, I will be watching and listening to Daya's new song called 'Bad Girl'. I first became aware of her when she released one of her first songs called 'Sit Still, Look Pretty', followed by her first solo album released in 2916 with the same name! Here's my review of her latest song!
To begin the video, there are some nice shots of Daya walking across what seems to be a very deserted location, in a casual top and trousers. In the background, the sky is incredibly bright blue and it easily shows the contrast in tone between the sky and the floor. Daya walks into a bar called the 'Bad Girl Bar' and is seen to be looked at by a group of boys who are clearly giving off signs that they want to get to know her better. She heads straight for the bar and seems to be ignore all of them. One of the lines that she sings include the words 'I already know what I like'...followed by 'bad girl I need a bad girl, because a bad boy don't cut it' which could explain that she is potentially bisexual. From these lines, it's clear that she might have tried to be in relationships with several guys previously and it didn't work out, so a bad girl is something she wants to experiment with. During this part of the video there are lots of blurry shots, almost as if she's thinking, and the flashes of light are the thoughts going around her head.
The music video moves into a new environment where Daya can be seen dancing in a very small hallway, with a lot of yellow flashlights and tones, different to the colours used earlier which is a good transition. The majority of these shots are quite dark, which helps you to focus your eyes on Daya's outfit, consisting of a white dress, but also listen to the lyrics of the song. I can also see that there is a telephone in the hallway that she's in, so maybe she could be debating whether she wants to call for help, or ask for room service...in a bar? I don't know!
The next scene shows a variety of close up shots of Daya's face, with 'computer like' graphics popping up on the screen in red, green and blue, almost like disco lights, which have a really cool effect, and also focus on some of her body parts at different times - including a close up of her eyes and hand for example. The video transitions back to Daya sitting at the bar with the guy who's trying to get with her, and she is approached once again by the only other female in the bar. They both walk through to a different room, and she guides Daya up a set of stairs, which could potentially be to get to a place where she is able to convert herself into a bad girl! I think the fact that she's entered a bad girl bar, doesn't necessarily mean that she wants to get with a girl, or that she is a bad girl...but she might just want to explore her options, rather than just being the innocent person that she's always been! The scene cuts to Daya posing on the edge of a stage with her hair tied up in a professional knot, almost ready for a catwalk, and she has a spotlight on her as well which gives the impression that she is putting on a show for the rest of the guests at the bar, or she is in fact practising how to be a bad girl! I like how empty the scene is in the background, and all your attention can be focused on Daya's dancing, as well as the various shadows and lights that help her to be more seen! At the end of the video, the camera pans away from Daya, and she is seen walking on the same deserted land as before, so it could almost be like she has dreampt her entire night at the bar, or she's reminiscing on those good times!
